Readers responded with light speed and razor-sharp accuracy (more or less) when it came to detailing last night's devastating -- body-wash-plummeting-to-the-earth devastating! -- 5.6 quake. We will all look back on October 30, asking ourselves, where were we when the great 5.6 quake of '07 hit? Well, after sending out the we-hope-you're-still-alive-and-kicking call to the SFist team at large, they responded. Here are a few of the shattering moments in the lives of some...

Much like "the Sopranos," our week-long look at the A's this season concludes with a look at pitchers and outfielders, as well as some closing thoughts on the A's from Christy. FYI- there's nobody gets whacked in this write up
You may recall our presence at a lower Haight neighborhood meeting back in January after a spate of gun violence galvanized the area and turned out hundreds of folks along with news cams and Heather Fong. Well, during that meeting Supervisor Mirkarimi promised that he would somehow find the city funding for a security camera at the corner of Haight and Webster, which is kind of the locus of all things crack-deal in the area. Well, the camera went up!
While intra-city burrito debates are a San Francisco tradition, we were a bit shocked to come across this article from a San Diego-based pub in which a "burrito expert" of sorts totally disses the San Francisco burrito!

-We'll say this about the Warriors-- they got some gumption. After a series of not so great games and the shellacking at the hands of the Spurs, the Warriors went out and beat the mighty Suns. They started off scoring 45 points in the first quarter and then held onto win 124-119. J-Rich scored 36 points, 24 of them on 8 three- point plays. Stephen Jackson had 29 points and Brittle Baron had 21. They are now only a game behind the Clips for the last and final playoff spot.
The scene: everyone is standing around the bar, taking sips from wine glasses. One of the attendees comments that she can't believe that a room of (mostly) journalists, even after being offered free booze, is predominately drinking water. We were fortunate last night to attend what was basically a book launching party to celebrate "Fine Waters: A Connoisseur's Guide to the World's Most Distinctive Bottled Waters." Appropriately, the event centered around tasting bottled water, many different types of it. The event was co-sponsored by Quirk Books, the publisher, and Chow.
It's the last weekend before.... the District 6 election! This week's episode: Everybody Hates The Final Push.
We had a brief moment last summer when we felt like delving into fame whorism. As of right now, mere hours before our television debut, we're wondering why--and we're on the verge of a breakdown. We certainly don't think we'll be as smooth tonight on Check Please! Bay Area as friend of SFist, Burritophile Dan Johnson, was on Bay Area Backroads last Saturday. We're not experts; we just like to eat.
We were invited to attend a party celebrating the ascension of the gang at Burritophile into the Rulers of All Media.
Dan Johnson of Burritophile wants to meet up at Taqueria El Castillito on Golden Gate Avenue, just a stone's throw away from City Hall. To us, this lends a lot of credibility to Dan and Co.'s Web-based burrito review service; one problem with your typical review site is you don't know how the staff's sensibilities mesh with yours. Cate Czerwinski, another editor at the site, joins us shortly after we ordered. She's actually the one who's behind the editorial review of El Castillito on the site; Cate gave it an 8 out of 10 overall. If we weren't inclined to agree we could always post our own review on Burritophile--that's the point. Burritophile offers a good, expanding mix of reviews from site staff as well as anyone else who cares to give an opinion.
Frank Thomas has hit 448 home runs, and has hit .307/.427/.568, over his 16-year career. That's pretty impressive, but in the last 2 seasons, Frank Thomas has been mostly injured: he's appeared in a total of 108 major league baseball games. Whatever Frank Thomas does in the 2006 baseball season, he'll do in the uniform of the Oakland A's. Thursday, the A's signed Thomas to a $500,000 contract, which reportedly includes $2.6 million in health- and plate-appearance-based incentives. He'll be a DH, and bat in the middle of the lineup. If he stays healthy.
After an unproductive week at the MLB winter meetings, the A's heated up the winter stove again: they traded minor league OF Andre Ethier to the Dodgers for major league OF Milton "Insert Game-Based Nickname Here" Bradley and major league IF Antonio Perez. That is: they traded a bird in the bush for two in the hand. Ethier was the AA Texas League player of the year--Bradley, the prize for the A's in this deal is 27 years old, and he hit .290/.350/.484 for the Dodgers last season. As is often the case when the A's acquire a player, Billy Beane is rumored to have coveted him for quite some time.
