A cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday evening, after police say that he rode into a Muni bus.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the 38-year-old male cyclist struck the 6-Haight/Parnassus Muni coach at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, as he rode through the intersection of Market and Gough Streets.

An Upper Haight reader who says he was a passenger on the bus tells SFist "The cyclist ran a red light and plowed into the rear doors... Within minutes, passers-by were calling 911 and claiming a bus hit a cyclist or the bus had run over the cyclist. The driver was horrified. Stopped traffic and muni service for the 6 and 7 came to a halt because this guy decided to run a red light."

The cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision, police say, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Police do not indicate that the Muni operator or any passengers were injured in the crash. As of publication time, additional details on the wreck were not available.

Band Of Deplorable Teens Pepper-Spray Cyclist, Steal His Bike

As many as 10 teens surrounded the cyclist before they attacked.

SF News

bikes

crime

cyclist

deplorable teens

Market Street

sfpd

Eve Batey

A driver in a tony Marin County town ended up facing reckless driving charges, after threatening the life of a cyclist and allegedly attempting to run him off the road.

CBS 5 reports that the incident happened "a few weeks ago," when the driver you see in the video below allegedly tried to run a cyclist off a Ross street.

The motorist then rolled down his window and shouted “I’m going to shoot your head off!”

The cyclist, who recorded the incident on his helmet camera, turned the footage over to police. They were able to track down the driver and cite him for reckless driving, a charge that could merit a sentence of three months in prison or a $1000 fine.

Richard Gutierrez, who owns a bike shop near where the incident occurred, tells CBS that “If a car harasses you police are like we didn’t see it so there’s nothing we can do about it," making helmet or other ride-recording cameras a good idea for cyclists who believe they might be menaced.

Gutierrez acknowledged that cyclists aren't always innocent in confrontations with drivers, however, saying “There’s always someone doing something rude, particularly the bikes they just fly through here without even looking at the stop signs."

“Should everything start going to court? Sure. Why not? Then maybe people will start taking things more seriously.”

And at least one person is going to court pretty soon: The motorist who started this discussion, who CBS 5 says is due back in court on April 4.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, she then collided with a 33-year-old male cyclist, injuring him.

As opposed to remaining on the scene, police say that the woman "fled the scene." However, police were able to locate the woman, and arrested her shortly thereafter.

Two people were transported to the hospital Tuesday, victims of separate collisions with vehicle drivers that left them injured.

In the first case, San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Robert Rueca says that a 32-year-old female cyclist was struck by a hit-and-run driver at 5:40 p.m. Tuesday, near the intersection of Bay and Kearny Streets.

Rueca says that the cyclist was headed west on Bay when the driver of "a white vehicle" tried to pass her, and struck her instead.

The cyclist was knocked off her bike and injured, Rueca says.

The driver kept on going after striking the woman, continuing to travel west on Bay.

The cyclist was transported to San Francsico General Hospital for treatment. According to Rueca, a description of the suspect vehicle has been put out to officers, in hopes that the driver might be tracked down and prosecuted. The cyclist was transported to San Francisco Genera Hospital, for treatment of injuries police say are not life-threatening.

Just a few hours later, at 10:09 p.m., another collision occurred, this time at Market and Third Streets.

This time, police say, a 26-year-old man "fell into the street" and was struck by a passing vehicle. The victim was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, with injuries police say are not considered life-threatening.

Rueca says that the driver remained at the scene, and cooperated with investigators with SFPD's traffic collision unit, who are working to determine the exact circumstances of the crash.

A cyclist is fighting for his life this morning, after a brutal collision at one of San Francisco's most dangerous intersections Monday night.

San Francisco Police Department spokesperson Officer Carlos Manfredi says that calls regarding a collision between a cyclist and driver at the intersection of Geary Boulevard and Divisidero Street started pouring in at 8:42 p.m. Monday evening.

As the on-site investigation didn't wrap up until 2:30 Tuesday morning, Manfredi had yet to receive the full police report, but here's what he knew as of this morning: A male cyclist in his 20s suffered "pretty severe" injuries in the crash, and was bleeding and unconscious when first responders arrived.

Manfredi says that the driver remained at the scene. Though he or she (Manfredi didn't have that detail at publication time) wasn't cited on the spot, Manfredi says that "now that we know who they are, we can make a cite — or an arrest — at any time."

According to Manfredi, "somebody ran a red light, and now it's up to us to determine who." Investigators were there into the morning taking measurements and interviewing witnesses, he says. Surveillance footage in the area of the incident will also be sought, Manfredi says, and police are eager to speak with the cyclist when he is able.

In the comments to a Facebook post on the collision by Gabriel Gonzalez‎ of the San Francisco Bike Ride Crew, one rider says that the cyclist, identified only as "Mikey," is at San Francisco General Hospital "with brain swelling, under sedation, and will likely stay that way for at least a couple of days."

When reached for comment, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition communications director Chris Cassidy pointed us to the Vision Zero High Injury Map, and says that "Both Divisadero and Geary are listed by the Department of Public Health as high-injury corridors. It's heartbreaking to learn of another collision at a location known by the City to be dangerous."

"Our hearts are heavy for all of the people hurt while biking on our streets in the past 24 hours" Cassidy says, noting that it appears that there was another collision between a motorist and cyclist at Division Street and Potrero Avenue this morning.

"The urgency for the City to deliver protected bike lanes and intersections has never been greater," Cassidy says. "There are a handful of excellent projects underway, but the pace and scope of these projects is inadequate. The cost of the City's delays and lack of vision is being borne by people injured on our streets."

Hit-and-run drivers claimed the lives of two cyclists in San Francisco yesterday, following collisions in Golden Gate Park and SoMa on Wednesday evening.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the first collision occurred at 6:01 p.m., when a man in his early 20s driving a white Honda Fit fatally struck a cyclist near John F. Kennedy Dr. and 30th Avenue in Golden Gate Park.

Though police did not provide any details on the victim, saying they were "unknown" in an email sent Thursday morning, according to ABC 7 the cyclist was female.

ABC 7 reports that "Paramedics worked frantically to save the woman's life as she lay in the road in Golden Gate Park, her twisted bicycle lay nearby." CBS 5 reports that the victim was rushed to the hospital, but did not survive.

Witnesses told ABC 7 that two men were in the Honda Fit driven by the suspect, who was "going 50 or 60 miles an hour and passing other cars."

"They clearly went into the opposite direction traffic," a witness said, "and went far enough over to run right into that lady head on."

KRON 4 reports that the Fit was discovered, abandoned, near the scene of the collision. ABC 7 reports that the car had dealer plates, and had not been reported as stolen.

The second collision occurred at 8:24 Wednesday evening, at 7th and Howard Streets in SoMa. Though police said in an initial email that the cyclist struck in this case was male, they sent out an update saying that details on the victim were, as with the previous case, "unknown."

KRON 4 reports that the driver in this case "ran a red light and hit the cyclist, and then sped away."

The cyclist was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police confirm that the suspect, a 32-year-old man driving a BMW X-3 with California plates, was arrested at the scene. According to Reddit user "maurin14," he or she "chased [the suspect] down with another pedestrian and demanded he sit and wait for the police, he obliged. Definitely not sober." An SFPD spokesperson could not confirm this account of the incident.

That spokesperson was also unable to provide the suspect's name and booking information as of publication time. However, we should expect more details on the collisions this morning, as according to a press release sent by the SFMTA, at 10 a.m. today "Mayor Ed Lee, SFPD and SFMTA will hold a media availability to discuss the most recent details about last night’s fatal bike collisions and the city’s ongoing Vision Zero initiative to eliminate traffic fatalities," they say.

Lee will be joined by SFPD Commander Robert O’Sullivan and SFMTA Director Ed Reiskin at the press event, which will be held at the SFMTA Headquarters at 1 South Van Ness Avenue.

Update: Additional information has become available following this morning's press conference. Hoodline reports that in the case of the Golden Gate Park hit and run, the 2016 Honda Fit turns out to have been stolen after all. The abandoned car was reported by a passerby who noticed it was extensively damaged and called police. The suspect (or suspects) in that fatal crash is still at large, and police ask that any witnesses call (415) 575-4444. The victim, whose identity has not been released, was a woman in her late 40s.

In the case of the SoMa hit and run, police confirmed that the driver ran a red light and fled the scene after striking the cyclist. SFPD Commander Robert O'Sullivan said charges in that fatal crash will include felony hit-and-run and vehicular manslaughter. At this time, O'Sullivan said that neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor.

According to the San Francisco Police department, the driver that they say ran over a cyclist after a brief verbal altercation during the Thursday commute is 18-year-old Oakland resident Taj'zanae Zakira Thomas.

As reported Friday, police say that at 4:55 p.m. Thursday, after a near-miss with Thomas' red Hyundai Accent, a 26-year-old male cyclist "banged on the window" of the vehicle, then passed the car and took his place in the lane in front of her near Fourth and Market Streets.

Police say that Thomas then ran the cyclist "over...with her vehicle" in what police characterize as an "Assault (Vehicle vs. Bicycle)"

According to the LA Times, Thomas "hit the man’s bicycle, knocking him over. She then drove directly over him and paused."

Witnesses, including volunteers from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition who were facilitating Thursday's Bike to Work Day commute, told police that Thomas then attempted to flee, but was blocked from doing so by the crowd that had gathered after the collision.

Thomas was arrested at the scene, police say, and was booked into SF County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. According to a spokesperson with the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, she has since been released on bail.

A teenaged driver was arrested at the height of yesterday's on Bike to Work Day commute, after police say that she intentionally struck a cyclist as he rode down Market Street.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, it was 4:55 p.m. Thursday when a 26-year-old male cyclist "got into a verbal argument" with an 18-year-old woman driving near the intersection of Fourth and Market Streets.

The cyclist "banged on the window" of the driver's red Hyundai Accent, police say, then passed the car and took his place in the lane in front of her.

The driver then ran the cyclist "over...with her vehicle" in what police characterize as an "Assault (Vehicle vs. Bicycle)."

The Ex reports that the collision occurred "before a gaggle of cyclists and other onlookers, as well as volunteers from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition who were out and about for Bike to Work Day."

After hitting the cyclist, the Ex reports, the driver "walked behind her car to check on the cyclist", "moved the bicycle, then tried to run back to the driver’s seat" to flee, witnesses allege.

Her escape was thwarted by bystanders, who "grabbed the driver before she could get back to her car, and someone pulled her car door open," the Ex reports. Then "a 'good Samaritan' leapt into the car and grabbed the driver’s keys."

In response, witnesses say, the driver “grabbed her pink Taser and tried to Tase [him].”

As of publication time, SFist was unable to independently confirm the Ex's account of events with SFPD.

According to SFPD, the cyclist suffered a "fractured back and pelvis lacerations," and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of those injuries, which police say are not life-threatening.

The driver was arrested at the scene, police say. A call to SFPD on what charges she was booked under was not returned at publication time.

A woman riding a bicycle along San Francisco's Great Highway suffered serious injuries Tuesday evening, when she was struck by a driver.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, it was 7:17 p.m. Tuesday when the 23-year-old woman rode her bike near the intersection of Great Highway and Vicente Street.

(It's a bit confusing, but if you look at a map you'll see that there are actually two "Great Highway"s that are parallel to one another in that area — one which runs directly against Ocean Beach, and a second one that intersects with the east-west running streets in the area. The cyclist, according to police, was on this latter stretch of roadway.)

Police say that a "vehicle collided with bicyclist," but provided no information regarding the vehicle's presumable driver. Bay City News reports, however, that the driver was an 18-year-old man. According to SFPD, no arrests were made at the crash site.

The cyclist suffered "skull fractures" in the collision, police say. She was transported to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of what police say are life-threatening "major head injuries."

BCN reports that the driver "remained at the scene" and that "drugs or alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash."
A bicycle delivery worker was fulfilling a Postmates order for a burrito in SoMa when he tells CBS SF he was stopped by SFPD officers who went on to brutally beat and mace him, landing him in the hospital.

Donovan Reid, a 22-year-old black man, says police stopped him for using his phone. He maintains he was navigating rather than texting or calling. Asked for his ID in a snippet of video he recorded, Reid cannot produce any. As an article lifted from Bicycling magazine explains, in certain situations cyclists do need to present identification if it's requested by police or else risk being taken into custody.

Reid records this conversation and the aggressive tone of officers, but then his phone is off, and there's a break in the timeline of footage.

Bystanders pick up minutes later, recording disturbing footage of Reid screaming in agony. He says officers told him to "stop resisting" and hit his legs in particular, sending him to the hospital. He also received two citations.

On a GoFundMe page from which Reid hopes to gather funds for legal counsel and medical expenses, the cyclist elaborates on his experience.

I was riding my bike in sf doing deliveries for a company called Postmates when an officer pulled his cruiser in front of me and told me to pull over. I complied. He then stated that he is pulling me over for being on my phone texting while biking. I said I'm being safe and I'm only using navigation, not texting.

The officer told me to drop my phone (I started recording after he told me to pull over) and then grabbed my shirt collar and started punching me in my stomach. I noted that this was excessive force and the officer continued to punch me in my stomach. He reached for his mace and impaired my vision and then began grabbing me by my neck and slamming me to the ground, placing his knee on my back.

Later, more officers came and began holding my legs in the air and beating my legs, while telling me to stop resisting and keep my legs on the ground. I told him I couldn't do that because someone is beating my legs and holding my legs in the air.

Afterwards I went to the hospital and got two citations and my courier gear (1 bicycle) is in police holding.

Currently raising money so I can afford legal representation. This is a stressful and painful life event that no one should have to ever go through, I'm very happy to be still alive. I will use the donations accordingly to pay for counseling sessions and court fees.

The SFPD's Internal Affairs Division is reportedly investigating the incident, with the Office of Citizen Complaints notified.

A driver is behind bars this morning after police say that he struck and killed a cyclist while speeding down the wrong side of a narrow San Francisco street.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, 26-year-old Erick Mendez of San Francisco was driving a gold, four-door sedan too fast and on the wrong side of the 500 block of Goettingen Street near Woosley Street at 10:15 Monday morning, when he collided head-on with a 63-year-old cyclist.

The Chron reports that Mendez was traveling south and the cyclist was traveling north at the time of the collision.

Police say that Mendez struck a parked vehicle as he attempted to avoid the cyclist, who "was wearing a helmet and reflective gear," KRON4 reports.

The cyclist, who is reportedly from San Francisco but has yet to be publicly identified pending notification of family members, suffered a "broken neck" in the collision, police say, and died at the scene.

KRON4 reports that the collision was captured on video surveillance footage, and showed Mendez "traveling on the wrong side of the narrow street while speeding" and that "although the collision appears to have been accidental, investigators believe Mendez was at fault."

Police say that after striking the victim, Mendez remained at the scene and attempted to aid the mortally wounded cyclist. Police do not believe that Mendez was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving on the wrong side of the road, speeding and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence.

On Monday afternoon, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition released a statement on the collision that appeared to lay as much blame on the street, itself, as on Mendez.

"Goettingen and Woolsey Streets are like many streets across San Francisco," they wrote. "They are quiet, small, residential streets abutting schools, parks and libraries. Every street in San Francisco should be safe for people of all ages to walk and bike. We need greater urgency from our civic leaders on delivering the safe, liveable streets that San Franciscans deserve."

"Eliminating traffic deaths can only be achieved through engineering safe streets," the SFBC wrote, "expanding safety education and smart enforcement of our traffic laws by the San Francisco Police Department."

According to the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, as of Tuesday morning Mendez remains in custody in San Francisco County Jail. As of publication time, his initial court date had yet to be scheduled.
