Non-Football Related Argument Ends in Shooting and More
After yesterday's Raiders game in the McAfee Coliseum parking lot, a man was shot in the leg and groin (ye-ouch!) after a non-football related argument," according Alameda County Sheriff Dept. Sgt. J.D. Nelson.
It's a Motherf------ Column-Off
After last week's dueling press conferences and memo-leakage, the Homeless issue is becoming the Issue du Jour, leading to a full-fledged reporter dogpile. First came CW Nevius who weighed in with yet another story on the issue, this time saying that even in liberal, tolerant, San Francisco, residents might not be feeling so liberal and tolerant when it comes to dealing with the homeless. As evidence, he points to one of those online polls SFGate ran about the issue in which 90% of the people said they wanted something to be done. We, as a rule, hate those "polls" because it's actual scientific value is nil as it's all determined by people who were motivated enough to play along and doesn’t factor in those who were too lazy to.
SFist Watches: Even More TV Premieres
Tonight's lone premiere is a show we have such little interest in we didn't even bother to check out the pilot when it was available for free online. It's called "Life is Wild" and it premieres at 8 p.m. on the CW. We really have nothing more to say about it, and in fact, the main purpose of this post is to make sure everyone knows about the premiere of "I Love New York 2" on VH-1 tomorrow at 9 p.m. As you may recall, New York did not find true love during the first season of her "Flavor of Love" spin-off, since Tango dumped her for making fun of his mother. Poor, crazy New York. Will she find her soul mate this time around? Of course we can't know that for sure, but our bets are on Midget Mac.
SFist Watches: Even More Thursday Fall TV Premieress
We've mentioned before that the only "Law & Order" we watch is "Law & Order: Criminal Intent," and the main reason for that is our imaginary boyfriend Vincent D'Onofrio is on it. So you can imagine we were a little worried when the fate of the show was up in the air at the end of last season. It had something to do with the franchise not pulling in the numbers it used to, and production costs needing to be cut. (Of course it should come as no surprise that the shows aren't as big in the ratings as they used to be since you can basically turn the TV on at any time of day and find an episode playing on one of any number of stations.) But apparently a compromise was reached wherein new episodes of "C.I." will air on USA first, and then will be repeated on NBC at some as-yet-to-be announced time in the future. SO! You can catch the season premiere of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" tonight on USA at 10 p.m.
SFist Watches: Even More Monday Fall TV Premieres
Tonight's premieres are all on the CW, starting with "Everybody Hates Chris" at 8 p.m. Chris Rock himself will be making his first on-screen appearance on the show about his childhood, guest starring as a guidance counselor at his middle school. Which is to say, he will be starring as his own guidance counselor. Uh...we think.
SFist Watches: Fall TV Premieres Tonight
Abandoned kids, wannabe models, sitcom groaners, socialite teens, and a screaming Brit. It must be Wednesday!
SFist Watches: Fall TV Premieres Tonight
The premiere offerings tonight are limited, with the 8 p.m. return of "Beauty and the Geek" on the CW being the only new show in the line-up. The show maintains its "hot girls, geeky guys" convention once again this season, but they will be adding one geeky girl and one hot guy to the "social experiment" this time around. That's right, this isn't a dating show, although there have been hook-ups in the past. Instead, the geeks try to expand the girls' minds, while the girls try to help the geeks up their game. Ha ha ha! Look how dumb the girls are! Ho ho ho! Look how socially inept the geeks are! Lather, and repeat. We have no idea if any of the geeks or beauties hail from the Bay Area, as their bios don't give out that info, but we hope so, because the reality TV locals pickings are slim this season!
Homeless Kerfuffle, One Month In
We were on the 7 a few days ago and four gutterpunk types were complaining about how the city had taken their stuff from camps in Golden Gate Park. One of them, a long-haired fellow with a small backpack and very large pants, went on and on about how he was going to get a grant to put GPS chips in all of his things so he could get them back. Who, exactly, would pay for this grant was unclear. The conversation then descended into an irony-free discussion about restaurants on 6th Street that accept food stamps.
Yelp! Guns Drawn In Front Of Yelp's Offices?
Friend of SFist Jeremy Stoppelman, Yelp's CEO and co-founder, just shot us this note: "Guns drawn in front of Yelp office..."
SFist Watches: Your Locals On Reality TV
Did we miss an episode? It seems like forever since we've talked "Survivor" and the fate of local contender Yau-Man. How is he doing, anyway? Previously, he survived another tribal council because of Rita's yammering. Will another annoying female be his saving grace?
SFist Watches: TV Tonight
Of course, our number one viewing choice this evening is the season finale of "America's Next Top Model" at 8 p.m. on the CW. Will Melrose, the local girl-we-love-to-hate, become America's Next Forgotten Model? We're loathe to play into the whole youth-is-king attitude of the modeling industry, but we have to agree with the judges' assessment that Melrose does photograph a lot older than she is (although at age 23, she's older than most models who tend to break into the biz). We also have a hunch that Melrose is just using the show to boost her recognizability so she can launch her own fashion design business; she probably doesn't it as much as the other girls.
SFist Watches: TV Premieres Tonight
Yes, we did cave in and buy a dual tuner TiVo this weekend and it is, perhaps, the best thing we have ever done in our entire lives. The feeling we got when we were programming the sucker, and we got the message telling us the Season Pass we were trying to set up wouldn't be recorded because it interfered with two other programs at the same time, and we realized we could just set that Season Pass on the TiVo in the bedroom--OH!--it was heavenly.
SFist Watches: Get Your Own Network, This One Is MINE
If you notice a change in the usual Dr. Phil and local news-centric programming at KRON 4 tonight, don't worry, you aren't going crazy; the channel is.
Riders Up!
At SFist, we're about all things Bay Area, including the glorious sport of mountain biking, which, as locals like to tell you, got its start right here.
It may be January, but if you're a mountain biker in the Bay Area, it's never too early to start planning out your riding season. Especially if you have any interest in racing. Conventional wisdom might have you believing that you can start your serious riding and training in the spring and be ready for the summer racing season, but CW, she is a minx.
In fact, past experience has shown us that if you want to race mountain bikes in the Bay Area, you better start training now because a majority of the big races are in the spring.
Also, because a comprehensive, integrated, updated calendar of mountain bike events in Northern California does not exist, we've compiled the following list for your reading and racing pleasure. Be sure to bookmark this page.
