An out-of-control dump truck hurtled down Divisadero Street Tuesday, smashing into nine cars and leaving three people with minor injuries.

The 26,000-pound truck started to roll down Divis near Vallejo Street at around 2:45 p.m., NBC Bay Area reports.

The truck, which had no driver, careened down the block, striking several cars "parked on the left side of the street facing downhill," KRON 4 reports.

The next intersection down, the truck struck three more occupied vehicles, including one driver by a driver for Uber. Occupants of two of those cars, "including the Uber driver, were taken to a hospital by ambulance for seemingly non-life-threatening injuries," according to KRON 4.

Its mad run was eventually stopped by a tree at the side of the road, ABC 7 reports.

NBC Bay Area says the truck belonged to Smart Demolition and Excavation, a subcontractor of Synergy housing. They'd been working at a construction site in the area "for a few weeks" before Tuesday's wreck.

Speaking with CBS 5, Smart owner Alex Galvan says that "his employees parked the truck with the emergency brake on, delivered the truck to the construction site and then left."

The truck was "also on special parking wedges to keep it from sliding," CBS 5 reports.

But apparently that wasn't enough, as construction workers say that as they began to load up the truck, it "began to move, rolled over the wedges, and then careened down the hill."

According to NBC, police say that truck's emergency brake failed, causing the vehicle to roll.

An area resident who was home at the time of the crash told KRON 4 that "two of her Mercedes SUVs were damaged" in the collision.

Cara Flaherty, who was in one of the vehicles the truck smashed into, tells NBC that the entire encounter "was terrifying."

Three people were injured, one severely, after two drivers passing through Golden Gate Park lost control and slammed into some nearby trees.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the crash occurred at 7:26 p.m. Wednesday, near where Crossover Drive meets with Park Presidio Boulevard. Tweets from the San Francisco Fire Department, however, place the crash closer to the entrance of the park, at Lincoln Way and 19th Avenue (which becomes Crossover as it enters the park). Both agencies have been contacted by SFist to clarify the wreck's location, and we'll update when we hear back.

According to the SFPD, the drivers of two cars "lost control and crashed into trees." The wreck was so severe, the SFFD says, that one of the victims of the wreck required "extensive extrication" from the damaged vehicle, an operation that wasn't concluded until 10 p.m.

Both drivers and one passenger were transported to the hospital, police say. Two of the victims, a 17-year-old male and a 24-year-old man, underwent injuries police say were not life-threatening. The subject of the SFFD extrication effort, a male of unknown age, suffered life-threatening injuries and was last reported as in critical condition.

As of publication time, an update on his condition or the circumstances of the crash were not available.

Wednesday night's crash was the second major wreck in Golden Gate Park that day: According to Hoodline, a multi-vehicle collision on Kezar Drive near JFK Drive occurred at around 8:20 a.m. Wednesday.

In that case, the crash "was a collision between two northbound cars and one southbound car that crossed into the oncoming lane" after which "several people were transported to a hospital." Additional details on that crash were not available as of Thursday morning.

At least three people were killed in Bay Area traffic collisions this weekend, among them a pedestrian who was fatally struck by a California Highway Patrol officer and two drivers killed in a head-on crash on Interstate 880.

It was 4:15 a.m.Saturday morning when the first wreck occurred, on northbound 880 in Oakland, "just south of Broadway" ABC 7 reports.

According to KRON 4, a dark-colored sedan was seen "traveling the wrong way...without its headlights on."

Around five minutes later, that car "slammed head-on into another vehicle traveling in the right direction," KRON 4 reports.

Killed in the crash were the two drivers of the cars, identified by the Chron as 26-year-old Joel Hutchinson of Oakland and 23-year-old San Leandro resident Jennifer Huezo Ruiz. The CHP could not immediately say which victim drove which car (and was therefore responsible for the collision) "because of the wreckage at the scene."

There were no passengers in either car, the CHP says, and no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The investigation into the wreck is ongoing, police say, including a toxicology report to determine if drugs or alcohol played a part in the collision.

Then, at 8:24 p.m. Saturday night, a man leaving a wedding reception at Half Moon Bay's Sam’s Chowder House was fatally struck by a CHP officer as he crossed Highway 1, ABC 7 reports.

"Restaurant staff said the victim had just finished eating and was trying to leave when he was struck by the patrol car," CBS 5 reports. The victim has not been publicly identified, but was from Burlingame, they report.

According to ABC 7, the victim was attempting to cross Highway 1 between Capistrano Road and Coronado Street when he was struck. Redwood City CHP says via statement that "It appears the CHP vehicle was traveling northbound on SR-1 when it collided with a 74-year-old Filipino male pedestrian." He died at the scene.

CHP Officer Art Montiel tells NBC Bay Area "somehow [the CHP driver] collided with the pedestrian." The CHP officer behind the wheel during the collision has not been publicly identified.

"Our vehicles are equipped with cameras, so that’s something that we’re going to be looking at to see what happened," Montiel said.

According to patrons who spoke with NBC, when the restaurant's main parking lot fills up, guests often park across the street, then are left "dodging highway traffic on foot to get to their destination."

There are no streetlights in the area, they report, adding to the risks. "We're taking our lives into our own hands; it’s very hard to get across the street," one guest told NBC. "There's a constant line of traffic ever since we’ve arrived here."

"It’s kind of crazy with the traffic," another said. "It’s hard to cross streets, it’s hard to pull out, it’s hard to do anything. No parking anywhere."

Montiel tells NBC that "the officer as been temporarily pulled from patrol duty during the investigation, which is being handled by a Vallejo-based team." Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call CHP Officer Kurtis Waldschmidt at (650) 369-6261.

KRON 4 reports that the driver hit the house so hard, the car was "75% into the building," but both occupants of the vehicle were able to escape the wreckage on their own. After neighbors reported "a funny smell after the crash" fire crews cut the power to four nearby buildings as a precaution.

A pedestrian was struck and killed on the Bay Bridge Tuesday morning, after they were reportedly spotted running between cars on the structure's lower deck.

Speaking with CBS 5, CHP officer Damian Cistaro says that the collision occurred early this morning near the Fourth Street off-ramp from the bridge.

The pedestrian, who they characterize as"wandering," was first reported at 3:17, KRON 4 reports, by a caller who said they saw someone "walking around on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge near 4th St." Another call reporting the collision came in soon after, they say.

According to CHP officer Jake Johnson, who spoke with NBC Bay Area, "authorities initially received a call about a person running in and out of lanes on the freeway."

The pedestrian "ended up on top of a grey Porsche and was pronounced dead at the scene," Johnson says.

As of publication time, the San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office had not publicly released any additional details on the deceased, including gender, age, or name.

Following the crash, the 1, 2 and 3 lanes of Eastbound 80 were closed for an investigation into the collision. By 4:38 a.m., they had reopened and traffic resumed in the area.

It was fancy car v fancy car on Van Ness Avenue Monday afternoon, when the driver of a sliver Mercedes smashed into the front of a San Francisco Tesla dealership.

CBS 5 reports that the crash occurred Monday at the intersection of Van Ness and O'Farrell Street.

According to an SFMTA spokesperson who talked to the Chron, a little before 2 p.m. the driver of the Mercedes "apparently tried to change lanes, hit the curb then panicked and hit the gas...The driver reportedly hit a tree, a mailbox, a Muni sign and a traffic control box before running into the dealership."

The driver, who the Chron says was injured in the crash, "smashed through the large plate glass window, sending debris and a huge piece of glass onto the sidewalk," CBS 5 reports.

The damage to the traffic control box knocked out the traffic lights at the intersection, the Chron reports, but though "Red flashing lights were installed within 15 minutes...cars crossing the intersection still frequently stopped and honked at each other."

If those cars were really honking at one another without driver intervention, as that sentence suggests, Elon Musk is right: The AI rebellion has truly begun, and this was merely an opening salvo in the war between the cars. Pick your side now, weak and fleshy humans!

You're not suffering from déjà vu: It's happened again. For the second time in less than three weeks, the driver of an RV has struck the Golden Gate Bridge's toll plaza, this time injuring one and slowing Tuesday evening traffic into San Francisco.

NBC Bay Area reports that the crash went down at around 9 p.m. Tuesday, when the RV driver struck lane 5 of the toll plaza.

The collision and subsequent response blocked lanes 4, 5 and 6, they report.

According to the SF Chronicle, the rented Cruise America RV was being driven by a 53-year-old Southern California man. He "apparently didn’t see signs advising large vehicle use the wide lanes to the far right," and "didn’t realize his rig was too wide to get though the No. 5 toll lane and got wedged."

The force of the impact injured a 54-year-old passenger in the RV. According to the San Jose Mercury News, the injured party was transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries to the leg.

As of 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Lane 5 remained closed, and an estimated time of reopening was as yet unknown.

As mentioned in the first paragraph, this is the second such crash in recent memory. On August 2, the driver of an RV struck the toll booth in Lane 2 (which is one of the wide lanes to which drivers of oversized vehicles are directed). When that crash occurred, bridge district spokesperson Priya Clemens said that costs for damage to the toll plaza in collisions like these are typically sent to the driver's auto insurance company. Here's hoping the driver in Tuesday's crash got his rental company's expanded coverage, because it looks like he's sure going to need it.

A teen driver was arrested Monday afternoon, after fleeing from San Francisco police in a chase that smashed several cars.

Police say that the incident began at 4:50 p.m. Monday, near the intersection of Turk and Polk Streets.

Police say that "officers were in a pursuit of a felony hit & run vehicle" that they say was being driven by a 16-year-old male. During the chase, police say the teen "struck an occupied vehicle and hit numerous parked vehicles."

Eventually, he dumped the car he was driving and fled on foot. That's when police were able to catch up to the suspect.

The driver of the occupied vehicle, a 29-year-old woman, was transported to an area hospital for injuries police say are not life-threatening. It's unclear exactly how many parked vehicles were damaged in the chase.

As the suspect is a minor, police are not identifying him publicly at this time. Police do confirm, however, that he was taken into custody at the scene.

Errant RV Driver Crashes Into Golden Gate Bridge Tollbooth

The driver of an RV slammed into a tollbooth on the Golden Gate Bridge Wednesday, trapping its passengers inside the vehicle.

SF News

collision

crash

golden gate bridge

traffic

wreck

Eve Batey

The driver of an RV slammed into a tollbooth on the Golden Gate Bridge Wednesday, trapping its passengers inside the vehicle.

According to Bay City Newe, the crash went down at around noon, when the RV's driver "struck the left side of the No. 2 lane" in the toll plaza.

The vehicle had plenty of clearance to pass through the 10 feet, 6 inch wide lane, so it's unclear why the driver struck the toll plaza instead of gliding on through, bridge district spokesperson Priya Clemens told BCN.

The collision left the people inside the RV trapped, as "the only door to the vehicle was ripped off in the impact, and the vehicle was wedged into the toll booth," the Chron reports.

Human toll takers haven't worked inside the tollbooths since March of 2013, so there was no one inside the structure to be injured in the wreck.

It took the combined forces of the California Highway Patrol, firefighters from the Southern Marin Fire District, and Golden Gate Bridge workers to untangle the mess, in an effort that took a little less than an hour.

The RV's passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene, CBS 5 reports. The RV was towed to a nearby parking area, BCN reports, where it could be repaired. Clemens says that an estimate of the damage to the toll plaza isn't currently available, but when they total up the repair bill it'll be sent on to the driver's auto insurance company.

Neither 14-year-old was wearing a seatbelt and both were ejected from the car. Jacqueline died and the other passenger sustained major injuries to her leg but is expected to survive.

Immediately following the accident, a bloodied Sanchez continued to live-stream the accident, including showing followers her dying or dead sister, saying:

"I fucking love my sister to death. I don't give a fuck. We about to die. This is the last thing I wanted to happen to us but it just did. Jacqueline, please wake up. This is the last thing I wanted to happen... I killed my sister, but I don't care. I killed my sister. I know I'm going to prison, but I don't care. I'm sorry, baby. I'ma hold it down.... rest in peace, sweetie."

According to a GoFundMe page posted to raise money for funeral expenses, the girls were running errands for Estrada's upcoming quinceañera, scheduled for this past Sunday. ABC30 reports the teens were returning from a trip to Fresno.

"Friend of a friend" Mary Hernandez recorded the video from Sanchez's Instagram Stories before it could disappear.

"So many people kept saying 'What video? I wanna see it,'" explained Hernandez to BuzzFeed regarding why she posted the video to her social media accounts.

"At first I was skeptical, but the more people reached out to me, then her cousin confirmed it was her. It's just so insane to believe that happened to girls from my city. It is for sure an eye-opener. I see people on their phones on social media all the time. I think this video can get a lot of people to think twice about using their phones while driving now."

Hernandez went on to say, "No one wanted to believe it, it was so crazy how desensitized and careless she seemed about someone as close to her as her sister. Who in the right mind continues to record?"

Sanchez was arrested on felony charges of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and has been booked into Merced County Jail. "They were very uncooperative after the arrest and [Sanchez] was screaming about her sister," California Highway Patrol Sergeant Darin Heredia told BuzzFeed.

According to the Daily Mail, authorities are investigating whether or not the video is authentic and if the filming contributed to the crash.

A woman died on a San Francisco stretch of freeway Monday, in a crash investigators say involved no vehicles besides her own.

It was 12:06 p.m. Monday when a woman piloting a Harley-Davidson motorcycle crashed on northbound Highway 101 near the Ninth Street off-ramp, California Highway Patrol spokesperson Officer Vu Williams says.

The woman "apparently failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway and struck a barrier," Bay City News reports. She died at the scene, Williams says. The San Francisco Medical Examiner's Office has since identified the motorcyclist as 51-year-old SF resident Macshell McIlvenna.

The wreck and subsequent investigation blocked lanes of 101 until just after 2 p.m., causing a significant traffic backup in the area.

A caller who reported the crash said that the motorcyclist had been in a collision with a black Honda Accord, the Chron reports. However, investigators "later determined the [Honda driver] merely witnessed the crash and was not involved," BCN reports.

“It looks like it was a solo collision,” Williams told the Chron “Early indications are, it may have just taken that curve a little too fast — speed is probably going to be a factor here.”

Cyclist Seriously Injured After Collision With Muni Bus

The cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash.

SF News

bikes

collision

crash

cyclist

muni

sfmta

wreck

Eve Batey

A cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday evening, after police say that he rode into a Muni bus.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the 38-year-old male cyclist struck the 6-Haight/Parnassus Muni coach at 9:40 p.m. Wednesday, as he rode through the intersection of Market and Gough Streets.

An Upper Haight reader who says he was a passenger on the bus tells SFist "The cyclist ran a red light and plowed into the rear doors... Within minutes, passers-by were calling 911 and claiming a bus hit a cyclist or the bus had run over the cyclist. The driver was horrified. Stopped traffic and muni service for the 6 and 7 came to a halt because this guy decided to run a red light."

The cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries in the collision, police say, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Police do not indicate that the Muni operator or any passengers were injured in the crash. As of publication time, additional details on the wreck were not available.

Mysteriously Empty Car Fished From Waters Near SF Stretch Of 101

Callers said the vehicle was "veering" on the freeway before the crash.

SF News

101

candlestick

CHP

crash

wreck

Eve Batey

California Highway Patrol officers called to a stretch of freeway in SF on reports of an erratic driver made a damp discovery Sunday, when they found the car in question had plunged into the Bay, but the driver was nowhere to be found.

The Chron reports that CHP received calls regarding a "veering" driver on 101 near Candlestick Point at around 6 p.m. Sunday night. According to CBS 5, witnesses saw the vehicle go over an embankment on northbound 101, where it then "plunged into the water about a quarter mile south of Candlestick Point."

Who made the plunge, however, is still unknown. CHP spokesperson Officer Damian Cistaro, who spoke with the Chron, says “Officers arrived, and they discovered this vehicle in the water about 20 yards from the roadway."

“Nobody was inside the vehicle," Cistaro says.

The CHP says that a tow truck was all that was necessary to pull the vehicle back to land, suggesting that the waters were shallow enough for a driver to safely escape. According to Cistaro, the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
