Craig Newmark and USF Team Up For Tenderloin Tech Lab

The University of San Francisco, being the state-of-the-art campus that it is, has donated 50 of their old but not obsolete PCs to the Tenderloin Technology Lab. The lab, a joint program between St. Anthony's and San Francisco Network Ministries, also got a monetary donation from shiny-domed computer nerd and Craigslist found Craig Newmark to cover the costs of upgrading the donated PCs with more RAM and updated software. more ›

Craigslist Founder Reverts to Old Media to Find Lost Pair of Glasses

Found over at Page and Divisadero, Craigslist founder Craig Newmark uses antiquated means of finding a lost pair of eyeglasses. (The phone number handwritten on the ad matches the business card posted at the bottom, which was confirmed as Newmark's.) more ›

Craigslist's Evil Twin Asked to Cease, Desist

Craigslist's Evil Twin Asked to Cease, Desist

Cragslist started up its own blog a few weeks back. (It's ever so loverly, and we recommend it between Missed Connections and Seeking Job searches.) Perhaps its creation was due in part to that fake Craigslist blog lurking on the Internets. more ›

EBay, Media Company?

EBay, Media Company?

You know that site where you bid on and bought your vintage designer duds? That Thundercats lunchbox? Or those garish home accents your girlfriend has all over her apartment? It seems that they were purchased from a media company. At least according to Simon Dumenco at AdAge: more ›

SFist Photo: Local Columnist Matt Smith

Yes, it’s the high-end Italian bike shoes of SF Weekly’s longtime area commentator Matt Smith gracing the very nice carpet of a swank local hotel. He was there yesterday hobnobbing with the likes of Howard Dean, Carole Migden, and craigslist founder Craig Newmark at the Democratic Party’s aptly-named “Join the Party” party. Unlike other members of the media, Matt seemed to have an all-access pass at the event. Why? It’s got to be the shoes.

Get Ur Geek On

Get Ur Geek On

The good news is that the first battle in the legal fight against the NSA's wiretapping program has been won by everyone who doesn't work for the NSA. The bad news is that internet-enabled vigilante mobs could be the next big fad here in the States. Eh, we're too busy applying a new Dasani-branded profile treatment to our MySpace profile and checking out some of the videos. more ›

Bay Blogger Thursday

We've been meaning to interview Craig Newmark for, like, six months -- ever since he dropped by SFist and left his phone number! Everyone here at SFist has used Craigslist for something, and we bet the vast majority of our readers have, too. Hell, SFist Cheshire was in 24 Hours on Craigslist, and when we first met, joked that he found "his car, his house, his job and his fiance on Craigslist." Well, he's got a new job, and his fiance is now his lovely wife, but still -- its not every website that can lay claim to changing someone's life quite so profoundly. more ›

Webby Award Winners

webby.jpg Even though the Webbies award ceremony is moving to the East Coast this year, Bay Area-based websites cleaned house in the actual awards (link is mysteriously slow). A big liver-flavored rawhide with a ribbon on it to SFist Ted and his adorable Dogster, which runs and fetches the Webby Community award. Arf! Other local winners, in both the webby and people's choice categories that we've selected completely randomly: Craig Newmark (Person of the Year), Flickr/Yahoo (breakout site of the year), BoingBoing (best blog), McSweeney's (writing), Google (design), Yahoo HotJobs (employment), PayPal (financial), Mother Jones (politics), CafePress (retail), and the Palo Alto high school newspaper (student), among many, many others. Complete list of winners and nominees here -- and congrats to all the winners! We can't wait to get the full report on Rob Corddry from SFist Ted! more ›

SWM iso Martian. High Speed Connection a Plus.

While we here in the -ist empire are struggling to cover the globe with our pithy observations and bad puns, we must offer grudging respect to Craig's List, for whom the world is clearly not enough. While writing a CL post to sell off some of our Giants tickets, the posting form asked us if it was "ok to transmit this posting into outer space." What the fuh? Huh? Whu the fah? FhwauH? more ›

Parties We Were Invited To

Finally. A goddamn invitation to a real party with real f**king stars. Like Annalee Newitz and Charlie Anders who were nice enough to give us Peter A.'s email to RSVP. These, friends, are stars. Love them. Gossip about them. But mostly, read them. more ›
