Do you procrastinate until the end of December, hoping against hope that a natural disaster will save you from holiday gift-giving duties? Conquer your crippling shopping phobia with the San Francisco Bazaar, an independent art and craft festival that boasts over 200 local venders to answer every gift-giving challenge in the books.

Next weekend, browse the stalls for everything from art, ceramics, cocktail accessories and knitted everything to soap and skincare, chocolate, jewelry and, for the hardest-to-shop for-dudes in your life, this magnetic bottle opener. A DIY section will provide relief from shopping (and distract children) with cards, jewelry and screen printing, and a special gift-wrap station will leave you with nothing to do before December 25th but deal with an endless brigade of festive social engagements (note: stock up on Tums and Advil now).

Now in its seventh year, the SF Bazaar is also showcasing local nonprofits like La Cocina, the San Francisco Public Library, the Crucible and SF Youth Employment Coalition with booths at the show. And with a staunchly "shop local" mission, any money you spend here will go to support Bay Area artisans and designers, which should help erase residual guilt from any and all involvement in the 1996 Tickle Me Elmo stampede.

Faced with an internet full of uninspired Etsy shops, we here at SFist consider ourselves fairly jaded to the twee, DIY sensibilities that seemed so unique just a few years ago. Then every once in a while we're faced with an idea so genius that we can’t help but take notice. Illustrator Kyle Wilson's instructions on how to fancy your own DIY bike hanger out of old bike parts has been making the rounds about the internet this week. Constructed out of some old drop bars, a quill stem and a few nuts and bolts, this space-saving bike hanger is both classy. Check it out:

Click through to Kyle's post for the simple instructions; all you really need is a set of drop bars, a quill stem, an old tire, some steel piping and a few basic tools.

Not all of us have enough spare bike parts lying around to execute a project like this. Here are a few Bay Area resources for scoring cheap used parts:

Refried Cycles: Located in the Castro on 17th & Sanchez, this shop offers all used parts with little hassle and no pretense.

Citizen Chain: Slightly pricier than Refried, this North Beach shop also specializes in used bike parts.

Re-Cyclery Bike Thrift Shop: San Rafael, CA. This store is a great resource if you have the time to head out of the city for a few hours. They offer a full stock of used bike parts of all varieties for very little money, including drop bars for about $10-15. Sixty percent of their proceeds benefit Trips for Kids, a non-profit that provides mentoring for at-risk kids through cycling.

The Bike Kitchen: Pay a small fee or volunteer for a few hours to earn the right to dig through their extensive stockpile of donated bike parts.
(Photo: Kyle Wilson)

Weekend Top 5: Chinese New Year Parade, Pet Adopt-a-thon

Chinese New Year Parade and Festival: Festival-goers might actually enjoy a dry Chinese New Year extravaganza this year. This week's episode: getting crafty with the image of mustachioed mayor pro tem, Mr. Ed Lee.

 By: The Tenderloin Geographic Society:

In this fickle world, the only constant is the merciless manner in which nothing remains fixed long enough to grasp it. This goes for friends (they move to other coasts), apartments (they go to those with better jobs), mayors (they never bother to show up, then move to Sacramento).

We knew that Mayor Ed Lee was temporary. We've heard people utter it like an admonition, "Temporary Mayor Ed Lee" as though they're not letting themselves grow too attached. [Ed. Note: Guilty!]

But we're human, and unless we're practicing Buddhists, are prone to attachment. And so, let's remember to remember. Since it's summer and you're really not into work right now, how about a little arts and crafts project?

If you can obtain both an inkjet printer and some inkjet printer shrinkable paper (the latter available at any good art supply store), simply use this image to create your own Mayoral keepsake. For those handy with a Sharpie, Ed can also be traced directly onto clear shrink film.

Remember to punch a hole through the top before baking the Mayor in about a 300°F oven, otherwise you'll have a nice wallet talisman to keep next to your Clipper Card. If he got rid of Nat Ford, just think what his two-dimensional presence can do to ease your day-to-day commute.

Never lose your U-Lock key again!

Of course, there's always the chance he could change the locks:

It's that glorious time of year again in which there are dozens of things going on over the weekend. Here is mere handful of choices. Enjoy!

How Weird Street Fair: Pull out that fuzzy pink cowboy hat and purple glitter g-string, or what have you, and head over to Howard Street on Sunday. (Since SF already fully embraces being weird, we propose there be a How Normal Fair, in which participants take khakis and striped button-up shirts to a whole new subversive level.) All ages welcome, costumes and dancing are encouraged!

Art in the Alley: Art in the Alley celebrates ten years on Sunday, transforming Jack Kerouac Alley in North Beach into an open-air art gallery. The work of over 25 artists will be featured, and there will be a live performance by Quartet Rouge, an all-female, alternative string quartet creating "percussive and edgy new grooves."

Noodlefest: While you're in the neighborhood on Sunday, hit up the 2nd annual Chinatown and North Beach Noodle Fest and sample delicious noodle and pasta dishes from over thirty restaurants.

Dutch Queen's Day Celebration: This Dutch themed street fair at Union Square on Saturday boasts an afternoon full of delicious food, beer, music, kids activities, and exhibits containing Dutch goods and wares, including modern Dutch designs and handmade Dutch city bikes. Be sure to get a fresh baked stroopwafel while you're there!

Vagabond Craft Fair: Get your Mother's Day shopping out of the way by perusing the wares of over a dozen talented local artists and craftspeople, while nibbling on some delicious vegan food from Raw Daddy Foods, in Urban Bazaar's back garden on Saturday.

Glen Park Festival: Go see for yourself how cute Glen Park is on Sunday. The festival has a huge line-up of bands, lots of children's activities, and great food. Take a stroll through the gorgeous and highly under-rated Glen Canyon while you're there.

Trend Alert: Yarnbombing

Recent sightings of yarnbombings across the Bay Area indicate that the long relationship San Francisco has enjoyed (or not, it's up to you really) with various forms of street art is taking a...

misc

art

berkeley

crafting

Crafts

humor

yarn

Andrew Dalton

Recent sightings of yarnbombings across the Bay Area indicate that the long relationship San Francisco has enjoyed (or not, it's up to you really) with various forms of street art is taking a turn towards the precious. The Daily Clog took a break from election and baseball news this week to profile Streetcolor - a local team of graffiti-knitters who hand-spin their own yarn (naturally) and have cozied-up street poles and lamp posts everywhere from Union Square and Berkeley, to far away places like Yosemite and Paris.

The duo, referred to simply as "anonymous blogger" and "the Russian" prefer to keep their identities a secret because they'd like "the work to be just about itself and not about our egos and being very important." (Although including one's blog URL with each piece would seem to suggest otherwise.) We suppose it wouldn't be street art if it weren't a legal gray area as well, but something tells us the worst the SFPD could do in this case is a littering fine.

SFist This Weekend

All Weekend: Be sure to check out SFist Jay's Outside Lands User's Guide, especially the part about bringing ...

Arts & Entertainment

art

comedy

Crafts

SF Events

festivals

music

weekend

Leanne Maxwell

All Weekend: Be sure to check out SFist Jay's Outside Lands User's Guide, especially the part about bringing a jacket.
