At the time we called it, "Quite Possibly The Greatest Newspaper Correction Ever." Now that we've arrived at that time of year when writers everywhere eschew their day jobs in favor of listing things in arbitrary order, the media watchdogs at the Poynter Institute's Regret the Error blog have named Chuck Nevius' false accusation among their Best and Worst journalism errors of the year.

That infamous correction again:

Beyond Castro church's drag-queen fuss, Aug. 16, Bay Area, C1

C.W. Nevius' column about Most Holy Redeemer banning drag queen performers incorrectly stated that entertainer Peaches Christ appeared at an event at the church's hall with a dildo shaped like a crucifix. He did not appear at the event, nor does he use the prop.

While Nevius didn't win Poynter's Error of the Year (that honor goes to CNN and Fox News for incorrectly reporting Obamacare's individual mandate had been struck down.), the Jimmy Buffet-loving, tattoo-hating columnist did get a runner-up nod, falling on the list right below a correction in which the New York Times misidentified one of the My Little Pony characters and a facetious correction about "Ferris Bueller's sister."

Anyhow: congratulations are in order!

We know. Things have been tough lately. Your comments never show up, the site's harassing you about Typekey, there's weird error messages about proxies and timeouts, and your olive tree is dying. It sucks.

Sometimes it helps to talk about these things. That's why we want you to write to sfistbugreport - @t - gmail - dot - com whenever this site breaks. Broken graphics, error messages, comments that never go through, unsettling aromas -- if the site's technology is doing something wrong, please, let us know. Because we want to fix the computer problems, but sometimes we're the last ones to find out about them.

Tell us what you were doing when you encountered the bug, what you expected to happen, what actually happened, and whether you go any error messages. That's important! Be as accurate and specific as possible, so we can fix the problem faster.

Check out Matt's campaign blog too.

Matt emailed us after his previous never-met-the-guy profile, objected to our characterization of his as boring, and asked for a chance to prove us wrong. We're always happy to be proven wrong! (as you can see by our constant stream of corrections in the comments.) Judge for yourself, people.

What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do?
I’m Matt Drake, I’m 34 and I’m a former lawyer. I practiced commercial litigation and patent litigation.

So the name of the SFist District 6 election column is "Everyone Hates Chris." Why do YOU hate Chris Daly?
I don’t hate Chris Daly. I’m not much of a hater (sorry).

Dude, we love it when Daly gets in fights with people on the board. Will you promise to get in some fights too? Over what?
I can’t promise to get in fights. I’m sure there will be plenty of disagreements. I recognize that the press loves the yelling and screaming, but it’s not the best way to actually get things accomplished. As supervisor, my job isn’t to get in fights (sorry!), it’s to govern the city.

Black coffee? Felony. Cafe-au-lait? Felony. Just milk? Misdemeanor.

The study of the law was initiated by state Attorney General Bill Lockyer, and looked at how the law was applied over the course of 2003. 70% of African-American and Hispanic men arrested under the law were charged with a felony; on the other hand, 60% of Caucasians were only charged with a misdemeanor. The lawmaker who wrote the bill, state Senator Jack Scott [D - Pasadena] said:

...he left in the option of a misdemeanor charge in the event an individual has a good excuse for possessing a weapon not registered to him - for instance, if the weapon is properly registered in the name of a spouse or other close relative.

Scott noted many of those charged with felony possession of an illegal handgun also were charged with other felonies at the same time. "Perhaps more dangerous individuals are charged with a felony," he said.

Is it just us, or is the racism here rather more blatant than latent? Rest assured, the Sacramento chapter of the NAACP is on the case.

But we can't always maintain the critical distance we may need to be able to evaluate our progress from an objective point of view. So we would like to invite a truly dedicated daily reader with some experience in writing to be our Public Editor or Ombudsperson. You would not be asked to create posts, but instead to simply read the site critically, keep track of reader comments and editorial concerns, and post a monthly update of site corrections and commentary analysis. Please email editor@sfist.com with a short description of your qualifications and we'll get back to you promptly.
