We'll bring you live reportage of the costumes, "unsanctioned gaiety," Dachau-like police state, public urination, and/or absolutely nothing happening at all whatsoever. Stay tuned.

10:45 Update: That's it. We're done here, folks. If there's a shooting or a Cher spotting, you'll have to read about it tomorrow. The Castro's lukewarm vibe has worn thin. Now we're off to Polk Street for some action! No, not really. We're actually heading to the St. Regis for Bloody Marys. Jealous? Don't be.

Thanks for reading! Now go to bed.

10:35 Update: Hot-Dog-on-a-Stick Girl has and will forever be a cool costume.

10:30 Update: There's some sort of commotion going on at the Castro MUNI station. Looks like some sort of dance off.

Also, Hot Cookie is open and crowd-free. Wish they had a Jell-o shot to spare. Alas.

10:25 Update: Did we mention that it's a bit of a police state at Castro and Market? Because it is. Our Orange County senses are tingling. Hard.

10:20 Update: No booze to be sipped, as of now. Starting to get the shakes. God help us.

Monsters & Critics brought our attention to the latest on the "brains vs. brawn" verbal tiff between Barry Bonds, who's just about to break one of baseballs' most precious records, and Bob Costas, veteran sports journalist and all-around smart cookie.

Barry, who in recent years has been angry when people make comments about his size/stature, went ahead and made a comment about Costas' size/stature, calling him a "midget man" and saying he doesn't know anything about baseball (hmm, writing top-selling books about the game doesn't count?).

Costas' response:

As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally"

More snappy verbiage from Costas, which was garnered from AP reports, is quoted in the M&C piece. We especially love how Costas finished his thoughts in a classy, de-escalating manner, though:

[Bonds is] under tremendous scrutiny and some pressure. It's no big deal

Barry -- you're about to achieve something amazing. Just shut up and do it.

Shooting At Powell And Market

There's been ANOTHER shooting in broad daylight???
In honor of SFist Jon's recent karaoke catastrophe caught on tape, we, the arbiters of good taste at SFist, present you with the Backstreet Plastic Bag Boys' brazilliant idea for what to do with all of your old plastic bags. The video starts off a little slow, and kind of uncomfortable, but we were seriously dying when we first saw this. YouTube commenter ChuckNO says it all: "The Guy In the Foot Locker bag is SEXY!"

Seriously, we cannot let videos like this one happen again, can we? Stuff like this can't pop up every time we innocently type "plastic bag" into a YouTube search. Such videos conjure up mental imagines of Sup. Mirkarimi showing up to a BOS meeting wearing nothing but a yellow Forever 21 bag, and that ain't right. This morning, the rumor was completly denied by DiFi's people. As to Gavin's political future, it appears other potential gubernatorial 2010 candidates are singing "oh, happy day" now that Newsom is busy self-destructing all over the place. Then there's the Republicans trying to add gas to the flames and blaming it all on Nancy Pelosi (see what happens when you elect Democrats into power-- straight people get caught having sex with people of the opposite sex as opposed to people having sex with pages). The fact that the Chron is even reporting that info is driving SFist Cedric out of his kitchen to rant about it.

As for the reaction, my, aren't we all a cynical bunch? Everybody seems to be thinking this whole thing is more PR than anything else. Maybe it's because, as a commenter said, rehab is the new black. Articles however from PR experts saying that it's the right PR move probably doesn't help nor does Ted Haggard suddenly coming out of rehab to announce he is straight again help (you can make your own jokes in the comment section below-- we're going to stay out of it). We would like to repeat the fact that Gavin's drinking has been a pretty open secret these past couple of years so maybe, just maybe, he really does need help.

Let's see, what else is there? Oh, all this is making Ken Garcia cranky again but he's always cranky. The Chron has the typical Man on the Street interviews but we've heard from good sources that most of those are written in a bar because they're such cookie cutter jobs that they can just make them up. There's also the always fun and exciting Two Cents thing which Gavinwatch says reminds them of a similar bit in the Onion. Man, that's our favorite part of the Onion. Beyond Chron, of all sites, actually praises Gavin for doing what he did and wishes that Gavin's supporters were strong enough to talk to him earlier about his problems.

If you want to good recap of the stories out there, our beloved Eve has a good wrap up on SFGate.

The Day After

One day after Gavin's big My Bad moment, the big question is what does this all mean for him, the city, and his reelection bid.
One day after Gavin's big My Bad moment, the big question is what does this all mean for him, the city, and his reelection bid. After all, as bad as this all sounds, politicians getting caught with their hands in the proverbial cookie jar falls into the realm of been there, done that.. Willie did it and nobody batted an eye. Guiliani did it and he's considered one of the big contenders for the Republican nomination. Gavin is still popular, the election isn't until November, and this is San Francisco and it's not like he's the only San Francisco politico who did something really stupid. But the one thing that seems to be sticking in everyone's craw, the one thing that could hurt more than anything else, is that he did this to one of his closest aides and friends. As somebody put it (we searched but couldn't find the link), this whole thing could be summed up by this eternal axiom: bros before hos. In other words, Gavin broke one of the cardinal rules of guydom.

So here comes the typical noncommittal stories saying well it could be bad, it might not be so bad. But in light of this and other screw ups, his image has taken a huge hit lately. And hey, there's the NY Times bringing up SFist Gate as one of his recent troubles. We made the NY Times! Of course, they don't mention us by name, but it's still super sweet.

The Chron's editorial wondered what the hell Gavin was thinking while Debra Saunders wishes Gavin would grow up a nd Ken Garcia thinks things are only going to get worse and compares Gavin to Clinton in terms of self-destructive behavior. Actually, Garcia has a point. The Bad Reporter, meanwhile, is hilarious as usual and recasts the infamous "So Best" picture from much happier days.
You may have noticed that commenting has been messy lately. But thanks to some intrepid bug-reporting readers, we think we may have narrowed down the problem. The solution is a bit tricky for now, so obviously it's not ideal. But we're working on making it easier for you.

For now, if you're getting a "Server Configuration Error" when you try to post, it probably means that you need to delete your SFist and TypeKey cookies. You can do that in Firefox by going into your preferences, clicking on "Privacy," then clicking "show cookies." From there, search for cookies that have the text "ist.com" (if you have cookies from any of the other -ist sites, they'll need to be deleted too, since they're having the same problems). Delete those, and also any cookies from TypeKey. Then try commenting again.

The process is nearly identical in Safari.

In Internet Explorer, you can delete your cookies by rebooting, downloading the most current DLLs, renaming each one four times, rebooting, searching the registry for the name of your mother's high school sweetheart, setting your monitor on a 37-degree incline, rebooting, and then confessing your darkest fears to a man with a fu manchu mustache. You may also need to reboot again.

A screengrab of cookie-deletion in Firefox follows after the jump. And please, let us know how this process works out for you: sfistbugreport - @t - gmail - dot - com. We're terribly sorry about how difficult this is. We're working on making it all better.

Interview: Oliver Chin

SFist interviews Oliver Chin, author, and Immedium publisher

Arts & Entertainment

As

baby

Bay Area

books

children

comics

commentary

cookie

culture

Fashion

Features

games

Gen X

holiday

Interviews

kids

new year

Oliver Chin

people

So I

Bay Area Sports

The Year

video

video games

Xbox

Year of the Dog

emily

What's your favorite thing about them?

SF Chronicle Amanda Gold recommends using seasonal spices in baked desserts, including cookies. We really want to try the dreamy looking and sounding lemon layer cake with cranberry lemon curd, ooh la la!. Gold is also all about the (vegetable) oil rather than the fried foods cooked in said oil. Kids of all ages, look to that oil for true Hanukkah meaning. Olivia Wu welcomes back Chilean Sea Bass, sort of. Watch it! The Monterey Bay Aquarium's gives the controversial fish a big fat "avoid", since it may not be truly sustainable, just yet. That designation is under review by the Aquarium, with new results by February.

I Could Do With A Spot of Jolliness

San Francisco's a lovely city, but it would be even nicer if someone did something about this damn Santa issue. Itís never, ever about comfort, but maybe thatís the ad folks point. Perhaps their line of thinking is that people are hungry while they wait to go home or to work, (or even better, shopping!) so letís give them a sensory memory to drive up milk sales? In the City's bus shelters, there are usually only three hard seats available-- if any at all-- and the seats flip our butt out as soon as we move. We arenít the only ones who find these seats to be highly uncomfortable. Weíve witnessed folks of all sizes and ages (including our relatives on a recent visit) scooting and frowning as they sit. The bus shelters get especially crowded if itís raining, but thatís about the only time we feel like crowding in one and checking out the graffiti, scratched surfaces, gum and trash on the streets, along with errant cigarette butts. Sure, folks may be open to relaxing a little while they mull their MUNI woes, but aromatherapy sponsored by the California Milk Processor Board is probably not going to comfort us just yet.
