Carnaval and Other Weekend Events

We have the annual Carnaval shaking up the Mission District on Saturday and Sunday. The Festival runs both days on Harrison St between 16th & 22nd St from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. The Parade is on Sunday, starting at 9:30 a.m. at 24th & Harrison, going west along 24th St, then turning up Mission all the way to 17th St. Check out the Entertainment Line-up for both days.

It's back. At this time every year, thee Moscone Center and St. Regis area gets stained with the Oracle OpenWorld conference. Last year we tried getting in, but were met with unhappy PR reps who ripped away our chances of getting into any open-bar parties, catered affairs, and a show featuring the bewitching Stevie Nicks by simply hanging up on our asses. This year, since our ego is fragile as century-old bone china, we didn't even try.

Here at SFist, we are not impressed with percussive instruments. Calling a drum circle "music" is like calling crosswalk stripes "a painting." But there's something sort of impressive about an experienced cable car bell-ringer, so gosh darn it we can't quite manage to fully roll our eyes at today's annual Muni Cable Car Bell Ringing Contest (noon in Union Square), at which Gavin Newsom and several local news personalities (please Jan Wahl, please Jan Wahl, please Jan Wahl) will judge clanking sounds and award prizes.

So, no doubt you've noticed that your Muni buses are a bit more chipper than usual, with a friendly message scrolling across the head signs. Some folks have been grumbling to us about the greeting -- "isn't the destination sign for, you know, DESTINATIONS," that kind of thing. Meh. We guess. Probably.

The west coast leg of the Web 2.0 Expo is here! Yay!
