Oakland-born rapper Kreayshawn is headlining a New Year's Eve show at the Regency Ballroom (tickets still available), winding a year in which a single YouTube video landed her a record deal and a red carpet gig at the VMAs. Today she tells the Ex all about her teen years in the East Bay, after "her musician mother Elka (of Bay Area garage-rockers The Trashwomen) moved to Canada" and left her to her own devices at age 15.

Portland's Broadway Calls To Throw A Pogo Party At Submission Space Wednesday And You’re Invited
by Erick Pressman
When we were young, if you wanted to find new music, you went to a record store or at very least bought a copy of Spin, Rolling Stone, or one of the many genre specific music magazines that came and went over the last twenty years. Who knew that in the late 2000s, you could use cable television’s “On Demand” function, which features music videos as well as television shows and movies, to find new, and furthermore punk, bands you haven’t heard of. That, oddly enough, is how Broadway Calls first caught our attention.

What to See at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass 2010
Hey y'all! It's the 10th anniversary of the free concert that Warren Hellman built in Golden Gate Park, and the stars are coming out to celebrate along with, easily, half of San Francisco. Yes, it's wildly crowded (because it's free), but as Warren pointed out this week, there's never been any violence or strife in the nine previous years, and it's usually just a glorious, tightly packed celebration of music, hardly strictly limited to country and bluegrass

Afternoon Palate Cleanser: Scissor Sisters' "Skin Tight"
Yes, the new Scissor Sisters album is *very* gay, as Pitchfork was quick to point out, but it's also got a few excellent pop songs on it that are sure to be crossover hits into straight pop chart territory, including this one, "Skin Tight." Above, see the Sisters performing the song in June in England, and click here if you want to see lead singer Jake Shears performing it in his underwear in Paris. (Also, here's a clearer audio version of the song.)

Yes, in fact, the musician most beloved by sixth graders in 80s will be coming to the Warfield on August 10th, and there are still seats available. Above, to cleanse your palate of less-than-palatable news this afternoon, please enjoy this video for his 2009 song "Craigslist," which is an homage to the Doors without actually being a direct parody of a single song. Also of note: That's actually Ray Manzarek on keyboards.

Treasure Island Music Fest Lineup Announced, Includes LCD Soundsystem, Belle & Sebastian
The lineup for this year's Treasure Island Music Fest was just announced, and once again it looks pretty good! This cozy little fest in the middle of the bay has been touted by many as extremely "well organized," but we think what makes it so special and swell is that there are only two stages, they're right next to each other, and the acts don't overlap. It makes for some very calm, and not so exhausting concert-going, especially for those of us no longer in our twenties.
