63-Year-Old Man Kills Self In Road Rage Incident, Backs Up I-80 In Richmond

Three westbound lanes of I-80 were closed in Richmond this morning after an apparent road-rage incident involving a 63-year-old man in a minivan, and a pickup truck. The minivan clipped the pickup after he appeared to be "brake-checking" the pickup — accelerating and then swerving in front of the car and slamming on the brakes. The driver of the minivan, Ronald Zerangue, may have misjudged the space in front of the car, and ended up hitting the center divider and flipping his minivan multiple times. He died at the scene. more ›

Shuttle buses are in place. And second, "[t]wo San Francisco Municipal Railway bus lines have been rerouted because police have blocked the intersection of 23rd and Mission Streets to investigate a crash that happened earlier this morning," reports SF Appeal. The outbound 14-Mission and 49-Van Ness-Mission buses are currently being rerouted to South Van Ness Avenue. [SFA] more ›

Peninsula Folks Loathe S.F. Commuter Toll Plan

Peninsula Folks Loathe S.F. Commuter Toll Plan

The San Francisco Transportation Authority's plan to charge commuters a toll of up to $6 to drive into/out of the S.F. during certain hours has (rightfully) come under fire. San Mateo authorities, who urged S.F. transportation leaders today to nix the plan, claim "that it would unfairly hurt their residents who commute to the city for work and also would push traffic onto local streets." The tolls, however, "could raise up to $80 million a year for roads and public transportation." [KTVU] more ›

Video: Surprise Curve on New Bay Bridge Bypass

Sarah Phelan of the Bay Guardian captured some great footage of the newly opened Bay Bridge this morning. You can see the new, surprise curve that folks have been talking about today at around 40 seconds into the video (just after the 35 MPH sign). Phelan mentions that there will probably be quite a bit of rubber-necking at that point of the bridge for a while. So, remember to take it slow! more ›

Tell Us Your Casual Carpool Stories

We've always heard about this elusive casual carpool that many East Bayers utilize to get them across the bridge every day. It sounds like an adventure to us, and a little scary, like the carpool driver who got carjacked a while back. Luckily she was able to jump out and get help. There's also the rather amusing story from a male friend of a friend who rode in the back seat of a casual carpool, next to the female driver's laundry basket of dirty underthings. He was titillated to say the least, and we have to wonder if this was the driver's desired effect. SFist Rita also documented some hilarious casual carpool happenings back in '05. We'd love to hear more such stories, so tell us in the comments! And check out Evany on Twitter (friend of SFist commenter AngryBat) for her daily Casual Carpool Dispatches! more ›

Welcome, Fair-Weather Commuters

Welcome, Fair-Weather Commuters

We were there through the bitter season--the mud, the rain, the cold, the mid-afternoon sunsets. With dripping, grime-streaked rain gear covering our heels and neckties, we rode our rusting, filthy commuter bikes to the Caltrain station all through the winter, a sweaty, soggy bunch, smelling of mildew and Tri-Flow. more ›

The Horror... The Horror...

The Horror... The Horror...

Our ride home from the Caltrain station takes us through the strange, anarchy-prone intersection of Division, 10th, Brannan and Potrero streets. The other night, as we gasped for air while sprinting for the green light on our 40-Year-Old Virgin-style commuter bike, we had an unfortunate encounter with a bug. Bitter experience tells us that when a cyclist feels the splat of a gnat on the back of the throat, there is little to be done... more ›
