DISCUSSION/THEATER: Before Michael Bennett and Bob Fosse rose to fame with shocking original choreography, directorial genius, and having a penchent for abusing dancers, we had Jerome Robbins. The mastermind of steps behind such famous works as Gypsy, West Side Story, and Fiddler on the Roof, just to name a few, will be discussed in length tonight at "Words on Dance Celebrates the Life and Career of Jerome Robbins." The panel discussion will be hosted by "Robbins expert" Amanda Vaill, dancers Grover Dale and Sondra Lee, lyricist Sheldon Harnick, and Oakland's always way cool Rita Moreno (who effortlessly won the Academy Award winner in West Side Story for playing "Anita".)

FILM: Check out My Name Is Albert Ayler, the 2005 documentary about the life of avant-garde saxophonist Albert Ayler, the Cleveland-born jazz artist who moved to Sweden in the halcyon days of the '60s "in pursuit of musical freedom."

MUSIC: Buxter Hoot'n is a relatively young band, an outfit that uses both acoustic and electric sounds, has gone from relative obscurity to gaining underground buzz in record time. While all to easy to dismiss them as a jam band, Relix Magazine claims that they have the "independent rawness and creative brilliance that leads to a cult classic." And you just can't argue with rawness of the independent variety, folks. Campo Bravo and the Blank Tapes open for Buxter Hoot'n.

COMEDY: Although he was born in Alabama, Reggie Steele honed his storytelling form of stand-up comedy right here in the Bay Area. The former Last Comic Standing finalist performs tonight.

*MUSIC: Hotel Utah launches a brand spanking new party, YEAR. The night is being labeled as an "innovative branded concept," hosted by KUSF radio personality and creative director for the Mill Valley Film Festival, Dennis "The Menace" Scheyer. Each month at YEAR, one year will be celebrated -- ranging from 1956 to 2006 -- and the playlist for that month's event will be the top hits from that year. Which year will be the focus for tonight? Find out for yourself tonight over in SOMA.

COMEDY: Head over to Cobb's where Last Comic Standing will tape amateur comics performing their "best" material to (hopefully) make your guffaw. It will be a hilarious/painful night of comedy. Not to be missed.

CLUB: Tonight's theme at Charlie Horse, one of the best club nights to catch drag in the entire universe, is "Valley of the Dolls." How fitting. (Get it? -- Doug Benson: How he didn't win the last season of Last Comic Standing is above and beyond all logic. Then again, competitive reality TV makes little sense at times. (See: Banks, Tyra) Benson managed to make it on LCS not once, but twice. And with good reason: he's downright hilarious. Nikki Glaser and Mo Mandel open for the Benson. Show starts at 8 p.m. (and continues until Saturday) at the Punch Line; $15.

-- Shonen Knife: remember these ladies? A fixture of the alterna-'90s, they're still around proving to be a most entertaining Japanese rock outfit. They perform with Juliet Dagger and Verona Grove tonight at 8 p.m. at Slim's; $18.

-- A King in New York (1957): Charles Chaplin's final (starring) role. His swan song is about "[a] king [who] loses all his wealth and his tiny European country after a peasant revolt. He escapes to New York with his family, where fame-seeking socialites become his benefactors and the media tries to turn him into a product pitching celebrity, but not before he comes the aid of a young boy whose parents face sentences from HUAC." Also, it's not a silent picture. Yay! Screens tonight at 8 p.m. at The Castro Theatre; $6-9.

-- The Art of Being a Lover by Karinna Kittles-Karston: Basically, it's a lecture on how to hump better. Tee hee. The dinner/lecture starts at 8 p.m. at OneTasteSF; $15-30.
