San Francisco’s Comedy “Run” Club has turned a tucked-away corner of Sports Basement Presidio into a monthly hotspot for laughs. Every second Saturday, the space transforms into an intimate speakeasy with touring comedians, free pizza, drinks, and a crowd with the penchant for the unique.

Blow the whistle

Twenty years on, Too Short’s “Blow the Whistle” still turns Oakland streets, block parties, and clubs into instant dance floors. Recorded in Atlanta and Miami with Lil Jon, the track never cracked the Hot 100 but cemented itself as a Bay Area anthem, its hyphy energy spreading through local culture and sports arenas alike.

The original video shoot at Mingles Martini & Champagne Lounge near Jack London Square captured the city’s intensity, from street-side chaos to crowded dance floors, and introduced viewers to figures like the Turf Feinz, who later appeared in Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 Super Bowl performance. Two decades later, the song’s claps, whistles, and warnings remain woven into the city’s soundtrack, from local nights out to national stages. — KQED

Currents of the Black Pacific

At the Museum of Sonoma County, the exhibition, Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific, curated by Caroline Collins, widens the lens on Black history, tracing lives shaped by ocean crossings, wartime shipyards, and coastal labor. The exhibit moves from the story of Diego, an African guide who landed on California’s coast with Sir Francis Drake in 1579, to Black whalers, fishermen, and World War II workers who helped build communities from Richmond to Santa Rosa.

Photographs, maritime tools, and a video interview with Pearl Harbor survivor Jesse Love anchor the show in lived experience, while recent programming has brought Sonoma County writers into conversation with that legacy. Fourth floor futures

Up on the fourth floor of the San Francisco Public Library’s Main branch, there’s a corner devoted to people planning out their livelihoods. The library’s Small Business Center offers one-on-one guidance, databases, and workshops that walk would-be founders through permits, city codes, marketing plans, and the maze of local regulations that can stall a good idea before it leaves the notebook.

Basslines of memory

Inside the Victorian rooms of San Francisco’s Community Music Center, composer and bassist Marcus Shelby creates suites that move through Black history as deliberately as a walking bass line. His projects have traced the 1944 Port Chicago explosion, Harriet Tubman’s journeys, the Negro Baseball Leagues, and meditations on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., blending blues and swing with archival research and lived testimony.

Shelby, who once studied engineering before committing fully to music, now leads big bands, serves as artistic director of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and mentors young musicians in the Mission. Sunset bites

A tiny counter on Taraval Street is quietly feeding the Sunset. Little Aloha serves a handful of Hawaii-inspired dishes, from spam musubi to loco moco, priced so students and families can grab a hot lunch without emptying their wallets.

The co-owners, all San Franciscans, bring flavors discovered on trips to Maui and Oahu, balancing authenticity with simplicity in a compact menu. The $6 weekday special has made the spot a steady stop for high school crowds, with pineapple sausage leading the charge. — SFGate

Tower walk

The Bay Bridge pedestrian path runs for two miles, fully separated from traffic and lined with benches. The towers are massive, and cars move quickly below, making it very loud — great for stress-screaming or singing loudly off-key.

Stairway to the bay

Once you’ve finished the Bay Bridge walk, head to the Hawk Hill stairs that descend toward the Pacific Ocean, offering panoramic views of the Golden Gate, San Francisco, and the Marin Headlands along the way. The path is spacious, with plenty of benches, and separate from any traffic, though the roar of cars above is constant.

Holiday jays

A Northern California cannabis collective has put together a holiday gift box aimed squarely at weed connoisseurs. Emerald Triangle Craft’s 12 Jays of X-Mas bundles a dozen one-gram pre-rolls from farms across the region, spanning sativas, indicas, and hybrids, each labeled by grower and strain.

The packaging, illustrated by artist Mabel Alcock, highlights the farmers as much as the product, framing the set as a snapshot of the Emerald Triangle’s small-scale cannabis economy. The box is available at a variety of Bay Area dispensaries. — Broke-Ass Stuart

Leaps through time

Oakland Ballet marks its 60th year in motion, shaped by ambition, collapse, reinvention, and a stubborn commitment to the city it calls home. Founded in 1965, the company weathered national tours, lean years, a mid-2000s shutdown, and a revival under artistic director Graham Lustig, who has expanded the repertoire while keeping the organization afloat.

Counting the flyway

Now through January 5, the Audubon Society is inviting the public to take part in its annual Christmas Bird Count, one of the country’s longest-running wildlife surveys, with a couple Bay Area events coming up.

Additionally, photographer Dick Evans and wilderness guide and author Hannah Hindley are celebrating the release of In the Shadow of the Bridge: Birds of the Bay Area, which maps the region as a key stop along the Pacific Flyway. Evans and Hindley will speak at Book Passage in Corte Madera, 51 Tamal Vista Boulevard, on January 17. — Bay Area News Group

Storybook lights on the hill

With the Castro’s beloved Tom & Jerry house now dark, another longtime standout can be found just up the hill in Corona Heights. The so-called Holiday House at 45 Upper Terrace, also known as the Storybook House, goes all in for Christmas, with a toy train looping above the enclosed front porch and Santa climbing the ladder outside.

The owners, a retired gay couple, are known for decorating their home for every holiday and recently gave a video tour showing off the house’s whimsical details, including an elevator. They bought the home for $800,000 in 1997, and today it’s estimated to be worth between $8 million and $10 million. — San Francisco Bucket List

A Jewish Christmas tradition

For more than three decades, Kung Pao Kosher Comedy has given Jews in San Francisco (and many gentiles, we imagine) somewhere to gather each Christmas: a Chinese restaurant, a full crowd, and a sharp lineup. Created and hosted by Lisa Geduldig, the long-running series has built a sense of continuity and community that’s carried the show through generations.

This year’s headliner is veteran stand-up Elayne Boosler, known for her dry delivery and political bite, joined by Orion Levine, Amanda Marks, and Geduldig. Runs December 24–26, Imperial Palace, 818 Washington Street — The Bay Area Reporter

Lives in full color

The GLBT Historical Society Museum’s current exhibition co-presented with the city of Richmond’s Louise Lawrence Transgender Archive, I Live the Life I Love Because I Love the Life I Live, traces the lives and work of Black, Indigenous, and other trans and gender-nonconforming people of color across a century of Bay Area and national history. Photographs, performance ephemera, activist materials, and personal portraits move between the stage and daily life, from Finocchio’s cabaret performers to community organizers who fought for care and visibility during the AIDS crisis.

Figures like Stormé DeLarverie, Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, and members of the Filipino Task Force on AIDS appear alongside lesser-known artists and organizers, with an emphasis on joy, labor, and persistence. Smoke and memory

On a corner in the East Bay city of Richmond, CJ’s BBQ and Fish has been anchoring the neighborhood for three decades, run by nearly 80-year-old Charles “CJ” Evans, who still works the pits and the prep tables himself. The menu reflects his version of California-Southern barbecue, shaped by family roots in Arkansas, wartime Richmond history, and years of feeding shipyard workers, church folks, and regulars who never stopped coming back.

CJ’s BBQ and Fish now serves hundreds of slabs of ribs a week across its Richmond and Vallejo locations, remaining a steady fixture in a city that’s changed around it. — KQED

North on one

Highway 1 through Sonoma County offers a steady sequence of working ranch land, exposed coastline, and built-in stopping points that reward a slow drive. After Valley Ford, the road runs past Bodega Bay, where Bodega Head provides bluff walks and seasonal whale watching, then hugs the shoreline through state park land with beaches and pullouts at places like Wright’s Beach, Shell Beach, and the Kortum Trail.

This two-day gathering at the Kaiser Center features psychedelic pioneers, spiritual leaders, and community voices exploring the intersection of consciousness, culture, and plant medicine. Expect keynotes, cannabis-friendly zones, and a free outdoor fair with vendors and live programming.

Wednesday

• Comedy nights are a dime a dozen these days, but now you can get roasted by some of the Bay Area’s top comedians at Comedians Roasting the Crowd at The Function — where you’re the main course! We recently witnessed audience members at a local show get called, “Cop-faced motherfuckers” who smelled like fleece and resembled “living Patagonia jackets.” So, be prepared to clutch those pearls.

Thursday

• An impressive roster of Bay Area comedians, storytellers, and transit enthusiasts will take the stage at the Rickshaw for Muni Diaries Live: The Wayfinding Show as they share their transit-related experiences. Thursday’s theme is “judging, being judged, choosing a path, moving on, and more.”

Saturday

• Enjoy live performances, arts and crafts, a lowrider car show, and much more at the 2025 Cesar Chavez Holiday Parade & Festival, the largest event honoring the late civil rights and labor movement activist in Northern California. The parade will begin at 11a.m. at Dolores Park and will travel along Mission to 24th and Folsom, followed by the free, day-long festival.
• Vintage fashion and nostalgia buffs will descend upon Fort Mason for West Coast Craft’s WAVES indoor show, featuring 120+ fashion, design, and housewares vendors working in the world of vintage.

San Francisco-born comedian Margaret Cho stunned viewers on Wednesday night with an outstanding performance on Celebrity Jeopardy!, including two bold Daily Double wins. Cho, who was playing on behalf of charity Friendly House, which supports women recovering from substance abuse, began the game with a slight lead against opponents Seth Green and Rachel Brosnahan after answering 12 clues correctly in the first round.

Cho’s two Daily Double wins then gained her a huge lead of $47,100 by Final Jeopardy! Finishing with an impressive $54,100, Cho secured a spot in the semifinals and garnered enthusiastic applause across social media.

Cho will potentially be competing with fellow comedian and Oakland-based W. Kamau Bell, who also advanced earlier in the season. Bell's charity is DonorsChoose, where he serves on the board. DonorsChoose helps match teachers with donors to directly fund their projects.

A local comedian is opening a new comedy club this spring in a former dive bar space near Market and Van Ness in San Francisco, and it will be called The Function.

Comedian Stroy Moyd announced on Instagram that he has signed a lease for 1414 Market Street, a space that formerly housed the dive bar The Hot Spot, for what he calls "a comedy club, night club, and cocktail lounge." And he's planning to get open pretty quickly, with a target date of May 1.

"This achievement has been 18 years in the making," Moyd says. "Numerous venues have raked in significant profits, selling drinks and food to the audiences I’ve drawn in. Now, it’s my turn to take charge and be the one profiting from food, drinks, and tickets (of course, with a touch of humor) lol."

BrokeAss Stuart spoke to Moyd, who has been organizing the Hella Funny comedy shows in SF and Oakland for years — Hella Funny currently happens on Fridays and Saturdays at Mayes Oyster House on Polk Street.

Moyd says the plan is to move most of Hella Funny's shows to The Function, producing two shows per night, seven nights a week. "We will still keep our shows at the cannabis clubs, strip club shows and Cobbs [Comedy Club] and [The] Battery."

But that's not all. In the announcement, Moyd says, in addition to comedy, "Get ready for DJ parties, dance nights, art exhibitions... silent discos, and more."

Moyd is bringing in the designer from Bar Fluxus, and he says this won't end up being another dive bar like it was before, "more of a comedy club that turns into a fancy cocktail lounge." Moyd says that the cocktails will rotate with monthly-changing themes — and he suggests the first theme in May will be "A Taste of Maui" with tiki-themed drinks.

And, he tells BrokeAss Stuart, "My goal is to showcase the diversity of comedic talent in the Bay. White, Black, gay, nonbinary, Egyptian, Christian, trans, Palestinian, and more!  Everyone is welcome."

There appears to be a full liquor license attached to the venue, but it's not clear if that is being transferred. And May 1 sounds like an ambitious turnaround for buildout and permits, but maybe not!

The 21st annual comedy festival SF Sketchfest is back starting Thursday, featuring everything from a freshly crowned Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actor to a puppet dog that mostly just makes poop jokes.

As of last year, we are back to doing SF Sketchfest in person, and Thursday kicks off 16 days of the 21st SF Sketchfest Comedy Festival. This year's festival will feature a Porchlight show with our old friends Beth Lisick and Arlinne Klatt, with featured storytellers Paul Giamatti — who’s fresh off winning the Best Actor Critics' Choice Movie Award for The Holdovers — and Bob Odenkirk, who’s fresh off winning precisely zero Emmy Awards whatsoever for Better Call Saul, which was nominated 53 times.

The nonsense begins Thursday night with Eric Idle in Eric Idle but Jeff B. Davis. The former Monty Python member Idle recently claimed, “It may be the last show I ever do.” Is he just saying that to drive up ticket sales? Tune in Thursday to find out!

There are also four Kids in the Hall shows scheduled, and at this point, only one of them is sold out (though that performance will be available via streaming).

“It’s just a very great festival,” Kids in the Hall’s Scott Thompson tells the Bay Area News Group. “They take really good care of you, and there’s all kinds of comedy, improv, clown shows, standup. It’s probably the biggest, most diverse comedy [festival] I’ve ever been involved in. Comedians are so often on the road, and we have such itinerant lives. We’re all over the place, and these festivals are really good when you get to connect with people that you haven’t seen in a long time.”

A few standout movie parodies also highlight the schedule, including "Exorcistic" (Saturday, January 20 at Club Fugazi), "The Fast and the Furious: A Musical Parody" (Thursday, February 1 at the Great Star Theatre), and "The Real Housewives: The Unauthorized Musical Parody" (Sunday, February 4 at The Marsh).

A couple are of these shows will be available for streaming, including next Wednesday's sold-out Kids in the Hall show at the Great Star Theater, and this Sunday night’s Triumph the Insult Comic Dog’s ‘Let’s Make a Poop’ at the Castro that will also feature “Weird Al" Yankovic.

The combined standup talents of Amy Poehler and Tina Fey will double-team SF and Oakland in late January, as the two just announced new dates for their first-ever tour together.

The high-water mark of the Golden Globes Awards was 2013-15 (and 2021) when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted, before we all decided fuck the Golden Globes. But the Saturday Night Live cast alums, the first to co-anchor “Weekend Update” together, have also famously collaborated in the hit films Mean Girls and Sisters (and the more modest hit Baby Mama.)

Now the two are on their first-ever standup comedy tour together, the Restless Leg Tour, which started in April, and announced a second leg of tour dates in June. Now a third leg of tour dates was announced on Tuesday, and the Chronicle reports that San Francisco and Oakland have both been added to the tour.  

The San Francisco show is scheduled Friday, January 26 at the Masonic, and Oakland’s show is Saturday, January 27 at the Fox Theater.

As seems to always be the case these days, they announce the tour dates the day before presales begin, with no price in the announcement. (Blame LiveNation.) Tickets are available at TinaAmyTour.com, and presales go on sale Wednesday, September 27 at 10 a.m. PT. General ticket sales begin Friday, September 29, at 10 a.m. PT.

The tour is intended to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the duo’s collaborations, which date back to the early 1990s on the Chicago improv scene.

“If this tour goes right, we can finally end this friendship,” the two said in a joint press release.

The delayed 20th anniversary of the comedy festival Sketchfest is delayed yet again, but organizers insist “Hang on to your tickets!” for a future rescheduling.

Last year would have been the 20th annual Sketchfest, the January laugh-in that, in a normal year, gets us out of the house and away from football and whatever new Boba Fett and Baby Yoda series is streaming. But last year's Sketchfest was whittled to a mere one-night livestream, as those were some of the darkest days of COVID-19. The glorious in-person return of Sketchfest was scheduled for January 7-23, 2022, at various venues across town. But, stop me if you’ve heard this one before….

“Due to the rising number of Omicron cases, we’re sorry to announce the postponement of the 2022 Sketchfest,” Sketchfest organizers said in a Thursday announcement. “Bringing people together to laugh and celebrate comedy is what SF Sketchfest does best. Until it is safe to do so, the festival will hit pause on the events planned for next month.”

This is absolutely the right call, and our hearts go out to festival staff. As their announcement notes, “We have also had some artists and staff members test positive for COVID.”

So… what if you already bought tickets to this festival that was supposed to be starting in just eight days? “We are asking all ticket holders to hold on to their tickets while dates are being rescheduled,” the announcement continues. “All ticket holders will be contacted directly in the coming weeks with new dates, details, and options.”

It had been a hell of a lineup, and we’ll see how much of it emerges intact upon rescheduling.  The lineup featured Maria Bamford, David Cross, a celebrity roast of Bruce Campbell, a.k.a. the guy who made sounds with his mouth in the Police Academy movies, and a whole lot more.

We hope all of that is successfully rescheduled, but, more importantly, we hope that the artists and staff are all perfectly safe and healthy come whatever rescheduled Sketchfest may bring.

Tickets go on sale Sunday morning for SF Sketchfest, which runs from January 9 to January 26, 2020, and it will, as always, feature a cavalcade of funny folks from across the country in comedy showcases, scripted shows, and on-stage tributes.

The festival happens across over a dozen venues over more than two weeks, and the scale of it therefore eclipses the three-day Clusterfest that happens in Civic Center in June. Comedy fans know about all the gems that can be found in the Sketchfest schedule, though, and tickets for the big-name events tend to sell out fast.

This year those big names include Tony Shaloub, Sandra Bernhard, Crispin Glover, Tony Hale, Busy Phillips, Rachel Dratch, Fred Armisen, Horatio Sanz, and Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees, to name a few.

There's also a Lin-Manuel Miranda-created show called Freestyle Love Supreme on January 24, which may or may not feature Miranda himself. The show has done a lot of traveling without Miranda, and features a "crew of MCs, musicians and beatboxers [who] take the audience on a freestyle, hip-hop, improvisational, never-before-seen comedy ride all based off audience suggestions."

Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Tom Lenk is bringing back his one-man show Tilda Swinton Answers an Ad on Craigslist, which he premiered at Sketchfest 2019.

There are also anniversary tributes to cult-classic movies including Whit Stillman's Barcelona (a 25th anniversary tribute featuring Stillman, and actors Tushka Bergan, Chris Eigeman and Taylor Nichols on January 11), as well as a 30th anniversary tribute of Stillman's Metropolitan. Local drag legend Peaches Christ will help celebrate the 45th anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show on January 11 with the help of star Barry Bostwick. There's a 40th anniversary tribute to Airplane! on January 19 featuring star Robert Hays (Ted Striker) and creators David and Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams. And on January 12 there's a 35th anniversary tribute screening of Clue with actors Lesley Ann Warren and Colleen Camp in attendance.

On top of all that, there are dozens and dozens of standup comedians — and "comedians' comedians" — coming to do sets and showcases including Maria Bamford (Jan. 9), Michael Ian Black and Bobcat Goldthwait (Jan. 11), Chris Gethard (Jan. 24-25), Chris Redd (Jan. 16), and John Cleese's daughter Camilla Cleese (Jan. 11).

During a show that was part of Mutiny Radio's Comedy Festival on Saturday in the Mission District, a comedian delivered a joke about the name Jeff, and some guy in the audience with the name Jeff jumped up on stage and punched him.

Comedian Capital Pilcrow was doing his standup set at Mutiny Radio on 21st Street when he was interrupted by the audience member, who also was apparently a comedian. KPIX reported on the incident without proper context, quoting comedian Ronn Vigh talking about the incident as though this was a person offended by an off-color or politically incorrect joke.

But as Ebaumsworld explains, the other comedian's name was Jeff — his last name has not been reported — and he leaped up on stage to assault Pilcrow after Pilcrow heard him muttering, and Pilcrow said, "I do know who you are. So shut the f – stop talking."

It's possible that the attacker in this case thought he was being personally insulted — not knowing that this joke is part of Pilcrow's regular current set, as you can hear here at the 1:39:30 mark.

The joke goes like this: "People ask me if [Capital] is my real name, and it's definitely my realest name. Definitely realer than anything my mom came up with. I don't know why you've got questions. Would you have questions if your boss paid you more than you asked for? This is a blessing. You should have questions if this dude comes up and is like 'My name is Jeff.' You satisfied with that? You just gonna roll with that your whole life?"

No one is pressing charges following the assault, but the comic named Jeff is now getting a citywide ban from stages if Mutiny Radio has anything to say about it. They posted to Facebook saying they're crowdfunding $500 to replace some broken glass in their front door, which he also apparently broke on his way out. The group says the incident was "a total accident of names," but that this Jeff guy is a "triggered danger."

San Francisco has been a standup comedy capital since long before Steve Martin strapped on bunny ears and a banjo to record “A Wild and Crazy Guy” here in 1978. The legacy of local comics like Robin Williams, Phyllis Diller, and Carol Channing lives on, as these Bay Area standout standup comedians continue to tickle ribs, bust guts, split sides, and expedite rolling in the aisles.

W. Kamau Bell

San Francisco’s current reigning king of standup W. Kamau Bell has blown up beyond the Bay Area, what with his Emmy-winning CNN show United Shades of America, his fancy op-eds in the New York Times, and his relatively new Netflix special “Private School Negro.” The self-described “6' 4", African American, Heterosexual, Cisgender, Left-Leaning, Asthmatic, Black and Proud” Bell also made his directorial debut in October in the A&E docuseries Cultureshock episode “Chris Rock's ‘Bring the Pain’”. Longtime SFist readers will recall Bell getting booted from a Berkeley Cafe in 2015 for being conspicuously black, which drew national exposure, and the cafe has since closed.

Marga Gomez

Robin Williams himself described Marga Gomez as “a lesbian Lenny Bruce,” but her proudest accomplishment may be the use of her image in a 2016 anal sex Twitter dispute between Kanye West and Amber Rose. Gomez actually performed on the mainstage at the first Folsom Street Fair in 1984 (before it was even called the Folsom Street Fair) but more recently appeared on Netflix’s Sense8, the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, and she even had a cameo as “Journalist” in the crappy 1995 Val Kilmer Batman movie Batman Forever (who knew?). Gomez is currently taking her show “Latin Standards” on an east coast tour, but she’ll be back to emcee the St. James Infirmary 20th anniversary benefit Hooker’s Ball this June.

Dhaya Lakshminarayanan

Yes, that’s local favorite Dhaya Lakshminarayanan hosting a teeny-bopper quiz show on PBS back in 2010. Her modern-day honoraries include feature segments on The Moth and NPR's Snap Judgment, winning Comedy Central Asia's Ultimate Comedy Challenge, and being awarded the 2016 Liz Carpenter Political Humor Award (previously won by prestigious types like Samantha Bee and Wanda Sykes). "As a woman who wields a microphone, I enjoy both adulation and suspicion," says  Lakshminarayanan, who now hosts the SF Moth StorySLAM at Public Works and recurring political comedy show The Resistance at the New Parkway Theater along with Karinda Dobbins, whom we love so much you will find her later along in this listicle.

Irene Tu

Get a load of DivaCup-drinking comic Irene Tu while you can, because she’s about to go open for Patton Oswalt on his southwest U.S. tour. But she’ll be back Sunday to host the annual Oscars screening at the Balboa Theatre, and Comedy x Pop Up Food every Monday night at the Starline Social Club in Oakland.

Jon Allen

"I don't have any headshots since shaving my beard and losing a bunch of weight," Jon Allen says of the promotional photo above. You can catch him every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at Cheaper Than Therapy, the standup comedy show he's co-produced for more than five years. Annually, over 20,000 people watch Cheaper Than Therapy live at the Shelton Theater. Allen has appeared in Wired, is a regular at SF Sketchfest, and has multiple publications as a physicist if that sort of thing is important to you.

Eloisa Bravo

"My vagina is very much like Canada, really big and nothing is going on," says Venezuelan funny lady Eloisa Bravo, who was the hit of Sketchfest’s all-Latinx show ¿Donde Esta Mi Comedy?. She does not have jokes about the current political situation in Venezuela, but she has many great jokes about how people always ask her about the current political situation in Venezuela.

Nicole Tran

Adapting the old Gracie Allen schtick of feigning ignorance to achieve hilarious results, Nicole Tran pummels you with a barrage of one-liners that play on double-meanings in the English language and the confusions they create for people to whom it is a second tongue. (“I won a beauty contest for girls who speak bad English... I am the new 2019, Miss Pronounce.”) Nicole appears on KTSF’s “Diva Talk Tonight” and is currently in the second round of auditions for “America’s Got Talent.”

Nato Green

You won’t see the Boots Riley film Sorry to Bother You at the Oscars this weekend (criminally, it was not nominated for anything). But you will see Nato Green in that film as Man in Crowd opposite W. Kamau Bell as Other Man in Crowd. "I wasn't an extra!," the labor organizer Green tells SFist. "Extras are paid an hourly rate, have no lines, and are not in the credits. Man on Street was in the credits, had lines, and was paid the SAG scale rate." Jewcy described Green’s latest record “The Whiteness Album” as “the woke Jewish comedy album you’ve been waiting for,” and he continues to co-host the monthly movie-mocking show Riffer’s Delight at the Alamo Drafthouse.

Natasha Muse

You’ll also find Natasha Muse at riffing alongside Nato Green at Riffer’s Delight, as well as the Verdi Club’s monthly showcase Verdi Wild Things Are. Muse describes herself as the C-3P0 of San Francisco comedy, because “a bunch of small bears once mistook her for a golden god but in reality she’s a bumbling robot .”

Alexandria Love

Reverse gentrifier Alexandria Love is an 18-time winner of the Tourette’s Without Regrets Dirty Haiku Battle, and she personally kicked my ass in that competition at last November’s Muni Diaries Live. She’ll be co-hosting a panel on marketing in comedy at this year’s SXSW, but more locally you can catch her at the EXIT Cafe’s monthly Mermaid Show and every Tuesday at Amnesia Bar’s Troubled Comedy.

Ivy Vasquez

“Life is really hard when you want to fuck all your friends,” declares dick-joke specialist Ivy Vasquez, who's currently promoting her online album “Pizza Rolls and Champagne.” Her obviously squeaky-clean material is such a hit with Bay Area audiences that she ended the above-named Alexandria Love's reign of 18 consecutive Dirty Haiku Battle victories, and she'll be at the Shelton Theater every weekend this month.

Karinda Dobbins

We’ll begin with the fact that Karinda Dobbins has opened for Trevor Noah, mostly because it was just Trevor Noah’s birthday yesterday. But Dobbins has also opened for Dave Chappelle and Michelle Wolf, and is hailed by Bitch Magazine as one of  "Six Hilarious Female Comedians You Don't Know Yet — But Should".

Lisa Geduldig

Best known for Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, the annual ‘Jewish comedy on Christmas in a Chinese Restaurant’ that has in years past boasted Henny Youngman, Shelley Berman, and David Brenner, Lisa Geduldig also produces the monthly shows Comedy Returns to El Rio and Comedy at Ashkenaz in Berkeley. “So many great stories have come out of the past 26 years,” she says of Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, “but one of the best was the year that a woman brought her service animal, Vern, that ended up being a rooster. A service rooster. I will continue to produce Kung Pao for as long as 2,000 people attend each year.”

CURE-ALL COMEDY: Laughter can probably cure whatever ails you, unless it's a medical problem. Dr. Parnassus's Old-Fashioned Good-Time Cure-All Comedic Emporium and Show will feature a line-up of NorCal's best comics, including Natasha Muse, Matt Gubser, and Sean McKenzie. THURSDAY, JUNE 29

PERIOD PARTY: This open-mic of menstruation-based horror stories doubles as a fundraiser to collect feminine hygiene items and put together Wellness Period Packs for people experiencing homelessness in San Francisco. The very hilarious Dhaya Lakshminarayanan will share her own period disaster — as will other gal comics, and the mic will remain open for the rest of us to take the stage and regale the crowd with stain stories. The sharing of stories aims to reduce the stigma of such basic lady menstruation. Cosign. Reddit, 420 Taylor Street, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., by donation.

IMMIGRANT POP-UP: Celebrate Immigrant Heritage Month with this family-friendly pop-up that includes Know Your Rights training, discussion panels, a film screening, and more. At 7 p.m. on Opening Night (Thursday), actors will read real-life immigrant stories and narratives, and at 2 p.m. on Friday, kids can join in making a mural celebrating their immigrant heritage. FRIDAY, JUNE 30

MARIN COUNTY FAIR: You'll never guess what the theme of this year's Marin County Fair is — unless you guess something to do with the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love, in which case, duh. This year, Marin County will "Let the Funshine In" with carnival food, rides, agriculture exhibits, and art running through the weekend and culminating with a fabulous 4th of July celebration. Most importantly, Ann Wilson (of Heart) will be performing on Friday night. How this icon has been reduced to the county fair circuit is beyond comprehension, but that's the world we live in. UB40's performance on Monday night is already sold out. Friday, June 30 through Tuesday July 4, Marin County Civic Center, San Rafael, $12 - $20 (Performances like Wilson's cost $50 and include fair admission.)

OPERA AT THE BALLPARK: Sit in the field or the stands for a free performance of Mozart's Don Giovanni simulcast live from the War Memorial Opera House and into AT&T Park. Arrive as early as 5 p.m. and picnic (we really recommend the field) before the San Francisco Opera begins to belt. Some park vendors will be selling food and drink, which means your opera viewing can be accompanied by garlic fries. AT&T Park, 24 Willie Mays Plaza, 7:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m, free.

SATURDAY, JULY 1

FILLMORE JAZZ FESTIVAL: The Fillmore Jazz Fest returns for its 33rd year with a weekend full of food, art, drinks, and of course, great music. This year's theme is (what else?) "Summer of Love Revisited." Over 100,000 visitors are expected to descend on the festival's 12 blocks over the course of the weekend so plan your visit accordingly. Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fillmore Street from Jackson to Eddy, free.

OYSTERFEST: Check out Passion Pit, Kongos, Sir Sly, The Soft White Sixties, Panic is Perfect at the 18th Annual Oysterfest Music Festival in Golden Gate Park's Sharon Meadow. In addition to lots of live music, enjoy oysters from all over the US and Canada, oyster activations and exhibits, and food from Bay Area restaurants and food trucks. PRINCE TRIBUTE: "When Doves Cry - The Prince Tribute Show" takes over the Great American Music Hall with some great American music. DJ RawLove will open the night with an all-Prince set and then an eight-piece band will play the entirety of Prince's 1999 and Purple Rain albums. Great American Music Hall, 859 O'Farrell Street, 9 p.m., $20 - $23.

SUNDAY, JULY 2

TOUCH THE HEART: The Asian Art Museum's "Do Touch the HeART" is an on-going multi-sensory experience featuring interactive huggable pillows and companion art experiences. This Sunday between 12 noon and 4 p.m. is your opportunity to share (vent, yell, etc.) your story of heartbreak and healing, and then somehow artistically "weave your tale into a community heart installation that grows over the course of the day." We don't know exactly what this means but it sounds like excellent art therapy. Asian Art Museum, 200 Larkin Street, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., admission is $5-15, plus an additional $5 - $10 for special exhibits.

YOGA AND BEER: Attention health and wellness nerds! On Sundays throughout July, Armando Luna will lead a 90-minute Bhakti yoga session in the Laughing Monk Brewery's taproom followed by a delicious beer. Practicing yoga anywhere outside of the typical yoga studio is always an experience, even if you're not down with morning boozing. Laughing Monk Brewing, 1439 Egbert Ave, Unit A, 10 a.m, $12 -$15 incl. beer.

While some are going to argue that Americans are generally forgiving and everyone except OJ Simpson can ultimately have a comeback, fans and non-fans remain upset about Kathy Griffin's controversial photoshoot with photographer Tyler Shields depicting the bloodied, decapitated head of President Trump. And while Griffin, 56, will probably have to take some time rebuilding her career, which depends in part on a rigorous schedule of live appearances, a handful of those appearances that were on the calendar for the next several months have already been canceled, with at least one venue claiming they could not plan for adequate security in light of this controversy.

That venue, as the LA Times reports, is the Veterans' Hall in Grass Valley, California, and the Grass Valley Center for the Arts, which booked the event, issued a statement saying, "We wholeheartedly support free speech, but in light of this situation, our first priority must be public safety, and we feel it is in the best interest of the community we serve to cancel this event."

Meanwhile, the St. George Theatre on Staten Island in New York City said, "Ms. Griffin's recent actions have severely inhibited our ability to fulfill our mission as a non-profit theatre serving the Staten Island community."

Also, as the LAT notes, Senator Al Franken issued a statement telling Griffin "it would be best" if Griffin did not make a planned appearance at his book party on July 7 at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts in Beverly Hills.

Napa's Uptown Theatre had two shows scheduled with Griffin in mid-June, and KRON 4 reports that those have been canceled as well. The announcement on their Facebook page came with no further explanation, the theater said, "Ticket holders will receive a full refund at place of purchase." The post from Friday has garnered over 1,000 comments both praising and condemning the cancelation.

The appearance by Griffin the day before the Napa gig, on June 16, in Grass Valley was canceled, according Center for the Arts spokesperson Julie Baker, was canceled after a Nevada-based conservative group called The Deplorables planned a significant protest if the event went on. Baker tells The Union newspaper, "Unfortunately, due to recent actions for which [Griffin] has publicly apologized, we have received hundreds of angry and threatening emails and phone calls, including threats to the Vets Hall building and our community."

TMZ further reports that Griffin's entire current tour, dubbed "Celebrity Run-Ins," has now been canceled, with Napa's Uptown Theatre being the last to cancel, following Griffin's public apology last week.
