Railway bandits, church bell thieves, pirates and now grave robbers? This current recession stands to send the Barbary Coast in to a state of complete recycling lawlessness. As the Chronicle reports this afternoon, metal thieves made off with over 525 bronze vases stolen from graves in two separate heists at the massive Cypress Lawn Cemetery this month. All told, the vases are valued at over $85,000 according to Colma Police.

Say what you will about the wicked evil of big-box stores in downtown SF. If Target were open at the Metreon, we could trot over there on our gloriously glossy, eco-friendly Marni platforms (a recent score from Jeremy’s) rather than pollute our way...

Woman Arrested for Robbing from the Dead
On probation for theft, Kimberly Ann Baker, 43, was arrested (again!) for stealing. This time she was pinched for swiping five copper inserts, a bronze vase, and a 12-foot copper drain pipe from graves at the Italian Cemetery in Colma. This isn't uncommon in the area since 70 percent is covered by 16 cemeteries, and said corpse storage facilities are "prime pickings for metal thieves, who steal vases, decorative plates, doors to mausoleums and anything else they can pry loose." Baker's victims had no comment. (SFGate)
