Nancy Pelosi Flip-Flops, Appears On Colbert Report

On last night's Colbert Report, Stephen Colbert welcomed House Democratic Leader and California's 8th congressional district representative Nancy Pelosi. Although she had previously told Colbert she would never appear on the show, Pelosi showed up to discuss Super PACs, abortion, Rick Santorum, and the Disclose Act. Bonus preface footage: Colbert eating a bowl of Rice-A-Roni and wearing ash on his forehead in honor of Ash Wednesday. more ›

    Rain: Singing In Korean

On the down side, it's raining (and will probably rain for the rest of the week). On the bright side, we managed to find an illicit YouTube upload of the Colbert Report episode where Stephen Colbert throws down a dance challenge to K-pop sensation Rain!! For extra self-referentiality, check out our own SFist Rain's take on Stephen Colbert's Rain challenge. We'll keep the video up on the site until we get a letter of complaint from Comedy Central. He's singing in Korean! more ›

Heh: Stephen Colbert Runs for Prez

We love Stephen Colbert (well, we love him insofar as we can stomach political satire), but we were shocked to hear that he's (maybe or maybe not) throwing his hat into the Presidential-race ring. Which? Cool. Or whatever. We find him sexually attractive, thus we'll probably vote for him if he does in fact run. more ›

Uploading Jon Stewart And Stephen Colbert Depositions

Here's a Moment Of Zen for you: local company YouTube has indicated (.pdf) in the copyright infringement lawsuit filed against it by Viacom that it intends to call fake news hosts Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert to testify in pre-trial depositions about uploaded clips from their Comedy Central shows (Comedy Central is owned by Viacom). Do you swear that your testimony is the truthiness, the whole truthiness, and nothing but the truthiness? more ›

Cocktails With The Man Who Killed America (er, Captain America)

On Saturday, fantastic Hayes Valley comic book store Isotope played host to Ed Brubaker, who's as hot a writer in the comics industry as anyone. Recently, a story of Brubaker's made headlines nationwide (and Colbert, of course): the death of Marvel Comics' icon Captain America. more ›

    GooTube vs. Viacom the Sequel

First Viacom didn't want their stuff on YouTube. Then they did. Now, once again, they don't. So some poor schmos at YouTube are looking at missing the Super Bowl as they have to pull clips from Viacom shows. The guesstimate for the amount of clips on there is about 100,000. more ›

    SFist Reviews Kasper Hauser's SkyMaul

    SFist Reviews Kasper Hauser's SkyMaul

It must be hard doing anything in comedy these days because by now, every nook and cranny of the culture at large has been in one way shape or form satirized, parodied, or snarked at. Hell, when you're looking at a situation in which Fox is looking to do a right-wing talk show that is a parody of the Colbert Report which is itself is a parody of right-wing talk show, we've really gone through some post-modern rabbit hole. But somehow, amazingly, local San Francisco comedy troupe Kasper Hauser has found one of the few things left that hasn't been completely mocked, those little SkyMall catalogues you always find in your seat when you fly. Yep, they've come up with their own version: SkyMaul. Esoteric, yes, and slightly obscure, but still something that rings a bell with everyone. Or at least anyone who has flown and gotten so bored they pulled out one of those suckers to read. more ›

    GooTube: Not Dead Yet

It looks like all those Comedy Central videos are back well most of them, on YouTube as Viacom and Google worked something out. And so ends the battle that led to a thousand blogger rants. more ›

Is This the Beginning of the End For GooTube?

Remember back to the giddy days of Napster? Remember how everything could be found online and for free and everyone did nothing at work other than download their favorite songs? Remember how there was a feeling that as great as it was, it was not meant to be as it was just too gosh darn great and how when it all came to a crashing end (thanks, Lars), we all somehow knew it was inevitable? Why are we bringing this up? Because YouTube is now running into problems. Sometime over the weekend, YouTube's new overlords, Google, took down clips from Viacom related shows. Big whoops, right? Wrong. The first things that were taken down were clips from Viacom owned Comedy Central. Which means we'll no longer be able to post clips from the "Daily Show" or "The Colbert Report" or "South Park". That sucks. There are still videos on there but not nearly as plentiful as there was before. And since they're all supposedly going down within days, no time like the present to show off the "South Park" episode that makes fun of us San Franciscans (see above). more ›

Local Loses Colbert's Green Screen Challenge

For those of you who don't watch the "Colbert Report", Stephen has been running a green screen challenge where he asked members of the Colbert Nation to add all sorts of computer effects to some dorky moves with a pretend light saber he did while standing behind a green screen (it was the intro of his "Better Know a District" bit with Lynne Woolsely, actually). Wednesday night, he announced the two finalists of the challenge, some woman from Torrance and a "George L" from Marin. The entire bit is the video posted above, but if you just want to watch just the entry, you can see it here. Well George, who flew all the way to New York to accept what he thought would be his prize, lost to the other entrant and left a little disappointed. So disappointed he later challenged Colbert to a light saber duel, which you can see here. more ›

    It's O'Reilly vs. Carroll

    It's O'Reilly vs. Carroll

What with PageF-----gate going on, Fox News has to be desperate these days to stir things up. After all, misidentifying politician's political parties can only work for so long before even Fox News viewers catch on. So how do we know they're getting desperate these days? Because as Stephen Colbert would say, Bill O'Reilly just put Jon Carroll of the Chron's back pages on notice. more ›

    Lynne Woosley Meets Stephen Colbert

Yep, it finally happened. The Mighty Stephen Colbert finally let us better know a district we actually know, that being "The Fighting 6th" of California. That district, of course, is Marin County and Sonoma and the congressperson is our very own Lynn Woolsey. And all this despite our little Nancy warning her minions to stay away from Colbert. more ›

We hope it was our valued readers who helped take the prize for ole' Nance. But that's not the real big news today. The big news is that Nancy has come out and said that basically, that whole impeachment thing everyone's all dreaming about these days if the Democrats take over the House? Ain't gonna happen. Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays

    Wednesdays, The New Wednesdays

Om, shanti, shanti, shanti, Wednesday..... Tonight: After you visit Stephen Colbert's adopted eaglet Stephen Jr. at the SF Zoo, stop by the zoo's Great Hall for a talk by the Gilman Int'l Conservation Foundation, about their efforts to save the okapi. The okapi is an endandered zebra/giraffe-y-like African eland whose pleasing combination of vowels and consonants gives it a place of honor in the hearts of obsessive crossword puzzlers like ourselves. Reception at 6:30, talk at 7. more ›

    Animal Roundup

    Animal Roundup

bluehreon.JPGNews from the fauna! A male blue heron from Fairfield is recovering from a pellet gun wound to its wing at the International Bird Rescue Research Center. Because blue herons are protected under federal migratory bird laws, injuring a heron is a felony -- and because people love animals, there's a $5000 reward for information leading to an arrest. They're watching the bird closely because it seems very anxious to fly away (understandably). In happier local bird news, Stephen Colbert's adopted bald eagle was hatched (go to "Stephen Jr. Hatches") at the SF Zoo the day before the earthquake anniversary. Exciting! Also: it was cool when he ate the bird's placenta, to be just like Tom Cruise (go to "tip/wag Tom Cruise"). And in your last bit of local animal news, the City and County of San Francisco's been sued by a Sacramento pit bull advocacy group, over the new mandatory pit bull sterilization law. The Coalition of Human Advocates for K9s and Owners ("CHAKO"), through its attorney and founder Dawn Capp, alleges that the policy discriminates against disabled people, who should be permitted to breed pit bulls to use as guide dogs or service dogs. Check out Capp's blog for more information -- the most recent entry castigates the Denver location of the next Real World because of the city's anti-pit bull legislation. more ›

    Animal Roundup: Stephen Jr.

    Animal Roundup: Stephen Jr.

picftvcolbert032806.jpgYay San Francisco Zoo! Not only did it win back its accreditation, but it also vaulted into Comedy Central gold with an inspired intern's (possibly unauthorized?) email to the Colbert Report show asking if Stephen Colbert would be interested in having a baby bald eagle named after him. Genius! The picture to your left is a still from the show, featuring John Ashcroft's rendition of "Let The Eagle Soar," as Stephen picked his namesake hatchling-to-be. (Click here to watch the video -- it's labeled "Stephen Jr.") eagles.jpgAccording to the zoo, this is all part of its Bald Eagle Breeding Program, which was started in 1985 to repopulate California with eagles after they almost died out because of DDT. Since 1991, the SF Zoo has released 90 bald eagle chicks into the wild, and this year, the eagles have laid 17 eggs so far, one of which is Stephen Jr. When they hatch, about half of the chicks will be raised on Catalina Island, and the other half will be raised at the conservation center and released on Santa Cruz Island. Check out on the right what little fuzzy Stephen Jr. will look like when he makes it out of his chiton shell! Webcam fans, watch the eggs here (site appears to have down for now, but will hopefully come back up soon -- click on Eagle Nest Cam). John Ashcroft fans, click here for video and audio clips of "Let The Eagle Soar." more ›

Bill O'Reilly? You Have Been Served

With San Francisco's honor besmirched by the falafel loving Bill O'Reilly, it was only a matter of time before Gavin the Good marched on in and made with the chivalry. So in a noon press conference today, Gavin let forth with great vengeance and furious anger upon Mr. Spin Factor, letting him know in no uncertain terms that we don't need him around anyhow. more ›

    Local Kids Make Good TV

    Local Kids Make Good TV

Sometimes, video games journalists seem vaguely Colbert-ish: earnest, confident, utterly out of touch. (Case in point: G4's "Judgment Day," with the slogan "all verdicts are final" -- oooh, the verdicts are final, OMG, they're totally the new Judge Judy.) But we're cautiously optimistic about "Reset," a new gaming news/lifestyle show, locally produced by Big Love Productions. Anchors include trustworthy fragdoll Kat Hunter (whose work SFist likes) and Raymond Padilla (whom we don't know, but he has a pleasant email demeanor) as well as Zoe Flower (who's Canadian and therefore potentially awesome). It's damn near impossible to find quality reporting in video games journalism -- it generally either consists of inarticulate fanboys churning out bland feature-lists, or poindextery assclowns trying to fit Foucalt into a review so they can call it New Games Journalism. So far, "Reset" only has one episode online, but they seem to know what they're doing: low on rhetoric, big on content, what's not to love? more ›
