Even with all the nasty weather, this weekend proved to be yet another violent one in San Francisco. For sure. After five shootings took place within a 24-hour time period, two people lost their lives. Let's go to the rewind, folks: Yesterday, on Rosie Lee Lane in the Bayview district, Torrance Gray, 16, was found dead of multiple gunshots wounds. SFPD were responding to a call when they found him. A few hours earlier,......

A few hours later after a car hit a man at the same intersection in Portola, a Muni bus stuck and killed a pedestrian on Thursday night at around 8:30 p.m. The 9X killed a woman in her 30s at San Bruno Avenue and Bacon Street. We swear, this guy is one step away from strapping road flares to his chest. Now, it's increasingly difficult for us to explain the conceptual art that is Michael Savage's work. Its genius lies in its demented complexity. But according to Bay City News (via CBS 5), Savage recently "sued the Council on American-Islamic Relations in federal court in San Francisco Monday over the group's use of his words on its Web site." Apparently,......

The man accused of assaulting and kidnapping Elie Wiesel -- attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery, stalking, elder abuse and hate crimes, to be exact -- changed his not guilty plea to one of insanity today. Earlier this year, if you recall, Eric Hunt, 23, stalked and dragged the Nobel Prize winner and Holocaust survivor from an elevator at the Argent Hotel (recently re-branded Westin San Francisco Market Street, even though it's totally located on......

"The kitchen was fully involved in flames when firefighters arrived," said San Francisco Fire Department Lt. Mindy Talmadge according to Bay City News. While not nearly as exciting as receiving top honors as the best city for tourists to walk slow on city sidewalks, or best city in which singles can hump, on Monday the FBI just awarded SF as the city with the largest reported number of hate crimes in 2006. According to Bay City News (via SF Crime): With a population of approximately 746,000, had a total of 94 reported hate crime incidents in 2006,......

This morning at around 1:15 a.m., an unidentified woman walking on Grand Avenue in Oakland was struck and killed by a passing car. She died at the scene. According to Bay City News, the vehicle then hightailed it northbound on Grand Avenue. Jerk. So far there is no description of the car or person that killed the woman. Of course, if any of you were up at that hour, kicking it in Oakland and......

According to San Francisco Crime (via Bay City News), at 9:05 a.m. this morning, Sacto resident David Bryant, 51, jumped over the counter at Wachovia Bank (at 200 Pine Street) and snatched some cash. He then fled the scene, all while cartoonishly leaving behind a trail of escaped dollar bills, and then tried carjacking two people with a knife. (Chortle.) He succeeded on the third attempt, kidnapping a cabbie at Bush and Sansome Streets, who drove him a few blocks away. Then, "police were able to stop and arrest Bryant on Leavenworth Street at 9:15 a.m." ...

Why, we've been so preoccupied with murder right down the street from SFist, we forgot that the rest of the Bay Area is also littered with shootings and bloody tomfoolery. Forgive us, won't you? Ahem: Two employees of Bill's Friendly were shot last night during a botched robbery attempt. One of the store's employees was killed, the other taken to a nearby hospital. (At right: the lone gunman's fierce image.) Another shooting in the......

Last night a little before midnight, Paul David Addis was arrested outside of Grace Cathedral, suspected of trying to burn down the historic church down. It seems that his neighbor called the police last night after overhearing him say something to the effect of "the cathedral wasn’t going to be there anymore." Yikes....

"Help me. I've been shot," cried a Tenderloin hotel desk clerk who received life-threatening injuries after getting shot before 2:30 a.m. this morning. James Talley, 20, and London Shaw, 19, of San Francisco, along with two others minors, were arrested today in connection with the robbery and shooting in the Tenderloin. Cabbies are upset. Again. What's else is new? But: This time the crankypants are concerned about limousines and towncars that illegally -- illegally? oh please -- pick up passengers at hotels, bars, clubs, or wherever to grab extra cash. Makes sense on the higher-end autos part. But as cabbies scrounge for customers -- or so we've often heard them complain -- they hate seeing other (and fancier) modes of transportation swipe passengers. According to......

San Francisco's white-hot crime trend continues to soar. Early this morning, someone fired shots from a car on the 3400 block of 19th Street, landing two victims a stay in the hospital, according to the Examiner (via Bay City News, a service we love more and more). What's more:: It was kind of startling — everyone wanted to know what was going on,'' said Melissa Scott, a customer at Lexington Club, which is located......

Some very sad news. According to Bay City News, "[t]wo men among the midday shoppers" smashed the storefront window at Gucci (Union Square) and stole an undisclosed amount of jewelry. No one has yet to be arrested for the luxury-store violation. During midday? Really? Wow. Were they super villains? Because how else did they evade capture in the afternoon light? Someone at Burning Man is found and arrested for flicking their Bic during a......

Update: Yikes. According to Bay City News, a fatal hit-and-run in the Castro took the life of a "45- to 50-year-old skater" (!?) 60-year-old man 77-year-old Roger Tennyson (or maybe someone else, or Rainbow Brite -- the victim's stats keep changing today) near Duboce Park at around 1:30 a.m. this morning. This comes on the heels of another hit-and-run incident: a member of the Canadian Navy was fatally stuck at Howard Street and the......

Okay, we don't usually do crime wrapups on Monday, but we're starting to actually get more and more freaked out about the state of public safety in the city these days. If you were anywhere near 17th and Capp Street around 6 p.m. last Friday, you couldn't miss the seven extremely loud shots being fired, and the subsequent mess of sirens and ambulance screeching onto the scene. One of our readers on the scene......

It's time for the San Francisco crime mid-year report card, and we're not doing so great -- homicide rates are up 20% from last year. The SFPD reports that drug-related homicides are up (15 for the year so far, compared to only 13 all year in 2006), spontaneous violence is up, and fatal stabbings are up (10 for the year so far, as opposed to 8 all last year). On the bright side, gang-related homicides......

Pee-yoo. Workers fixing the pipes on Valencia Street near Tiffany Avenue (behind St. Luke's) opened a 100-year-old unused cast-iron pipe in the ground, which released what Bay City News is delicately referring to as "a noxious odor." The odor was sufficiently noxious that 30-some people in the area got sick (nausea, dizziness, vomiting) and around 11-13 people went inside to St. Luke's to get treated. Ironically, the rest of the workers at St. Luke's were......

Newsom's beleaguered this week! So beleaguered we broke it down into two posts! While the Chron calls up all the supervisors to get an explication of their beef, the Examiner reports that representatives from Walk SF are questioning Newsom as well, in light of the mayor's office's unprecedented offering of $10,000 for information concerning the hit-and-run death of jogger Ashlyn Dyer in the Presidio. Gavin Newsom's beleaguered this week! So beleaguered we're breaking it down into two posts! Newsflash one: The Chron reports that various city supervisors are annoyed that Gavin makes no effort to communicate with them, calling him "isolated." To wit: *Chris Daly says that Newsom never bothered letting him know that the budget committee needed to approve more money for the police academy before going to the press and whine-whine-whining that Chris hates him. "Basically he's......
