More horrific child mortality news for you: A six-year-old boy was shot and killed while playing in his backyard last night in Salinas. It appears he was struck by a stray bullet intended for a gang member by a rival gang roaming the area, according to the Salinas PD. He was airlifted to a hospital but couldn't be saved. Though gang violence is somewhat prevalent in Salinas, this was the city's first homicide of 2010. [KCBS News] more ›

After leaving an infant alone inside a parked car in the Historic Tenderloin District, a woman (claiming to be the baby's mother) was arrested on suspicion of child endangerment last night. At the corner of Ellis and Hyde (a notoriously rank crime magnet) at around 9:30 p.m., "[o]fficers found the child alone in a locked vehicle and searched for the owner of the vehicle for about 15 minutes," CBS 5/BCN reports. "Firefighters also responded and, with clearance from police, broke the window to access the infant." The baby wasn't injured. more ›

Check it, check it... A Vacaville boy was about to turn one last week, yo. He and his cuzzes and his parents were going to kick back and chill at a park with some beers and some cake and some skunky green weed that his dad was bringing. The problem is, his dad gave him too big a hit before the party started (or was it a pot cookie?). And then, since he was only one year old and couldn't really hold his own, his dad dropped him back home at his ma's because he was turning into kind of a buzz kill.
