The homeless woman who gave birth early Monday morning in Golden Gate Park didn't think she was pregnant, despite the insistence of her partner to the contrary. So reports Bay City News, which notes the 33-year-old mother delivered her child in a small shelter behind the Rose Garden.

"I was just in denial," Malina Berman explained. "I would not believe it." Her partner of seven months apparently tried to convince Berman that she was indeed pregnant, but Berman says she waved away the symptoms as digestive problems and simple weight gain.

After delivering the child, her partner ran to find either a phone — they didn't have a charged one — or a taxi to take them to the hospital. Officials with the Fire Department received a call at roughly 4 a.m. yesterday alerting them to the delivery, and were able to locate Berman and her daughter in the park. "She was in the bushes behind the Rose Garden and she did not appear to be out for a walk,” SFFD spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Baxter told the Chronicle.

The two were transported to California Pacific Medical Center on California Street, and officials say Berman is in "fair condition."

Berman and her unnamed partner had been planning to head to Santa Cruz for work, she said, but now are looking for housing in San Francisco. She has named her daughter "Hillary."

“It was phenomenal,” Berman told Bay City News. “I was totally in shock, but it was also one of the most miraculous things I ever experienced.”

A 33-year-old woman gave birth in the chilly predawn air of Golden Gate Park early Monday morning according to a spokesperson with the San Francisco Fire Department who spoke with Bay City News.

Fire officials fielded a call at about 4 a.m. regarding a woman apparently in labor behind the park's Rose Garden. Fire department workers were able to locate her and transport her and her infant to California Pacific Medical Center on California Street. The two were in fair condition said the spokesperson, Jonathan Baxter.

The call the department received was anonymous and it wasn't known whether the woman who gave birth was alone when she did so, at temperatures that were below 50 degrees.

“We’re asking members of the public that if they see something, say something," Baxter told KRON 4, which also reported on the birth. If you see someone giving birth outside in cold temperatures, you too are encouraged to call 911, or 311 for a non-emergency.

According to the Examiner:

As a result of the traffic jam, a woman pulled off the road to give birth a few hours after the accident. The mother-to-be was traveling toward San Francisco at 3:35 p.m. when she detoured into the toll plaza’s left administrative parking lot, Chase said.

Wow. Did she have the kid right there in the parking lot? Judging by the article, we're not sure. But if she did: cool. The only thing missing were a few anorexics and a Lilith Fair-ish score for a very special episode of Grey's Anatomy.
