Helping Disaster Victims in Pacific, Southeast Asia

Bay Area communities are organizing efforts to help victims of the four disasters that struck the Samoan Islands, the Philippines, and Indonesia this week. Below are a few places to drop off donations. Additionally, the American Red Cross is working to assist all three regions, and they're accepting monetary and blood donations and volunteers.

This Is A Good Cause: Reason To Party

Haven't you heard? Medjool is the new Zeitgeist. It's true. (Well, what with the good folks at 7x7 Magazine now waxing poetic over the Mission cyclist bar these days, even the Routunda at Neiman Marcus could win that title.) So, why not head over to the place you used to hate for a very good cause?

SFist Tonight

FILM: Incredibly Strange Picture Show presents Wattstax, a documentary about a one-day concert put on by Stax Records in the summer of 1972 commemorating the 7th anniversary of the Watts riots in Los Angeles, featuring amazing performances by Kim Weston, The Bar-Kays, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers, and headliner Isaac Hayes. "The documentary's exploration into the Watts neighborhood, as well as the thoughts and expressions of the African-American community (and celebrity), are what secures this film as an important cultural time capsule."

As we pointed out, First Lady Michelle Obama was in town yesterday to promote voulenteering. You know, working for a good cause pro bono? Donating your time and elbow grease Similar to writing for a blog? That stuff. Anyway, what we want to know is, did she inspire you to give back to your community?

In an effort to promote "volunteerism," First Ladies Michelle Obama and Maria Shriver kicked off a national community service campaign today (United We Serve) at the playground of Bret Harte Elementary School. But Obama wasn't just talk; she joined more than 500 local volunteers to redo the school's playground. The new kid-space will include "an edible garden that will have a farmer's market stand where kids and seniors can sell vegetables to raise money for the school," reports NBC Bay Area. The playground is is expected to be completed by 5 p.m. today. (Say what you will about the Obama administraion, you would never have found Laura Bush doing manual labor in the Bayview-Hunter's Point hood.)

Help a Mother Out This Mother's Day

By now, many of us have read about the saga of a local mother's efforts to find a spot in a homeless shelter for her and her three children. We all feel kind of powerless with regards to her situation, but one way we can help many women in need is by donating diapers and tampons to low-income family advocacy groups. Apparently, WIC money doesn't cover diapers, and diaper companies won't donate them either.

Help One Woman and Her Family Find a Home

While Gavin Newsom tours California to tout his successes as mayor of San Francisco -- not to mention spending the weekend at the insider-baseball-y Democratic Convention in Sacramento, along with practically every other SF progressive and wonk -- he hasn't solved San Francisco's ails as thoroughly as he might want you to think he has.

Outfit Worn by Penn in 'Milk' to Be Auctioned Off for Charity

The shirt, suit, and tie donned by Sean Penn in Gus Van Sant's Milk will be auctioned off online to benefit Variety - the Children's Charity of Southern California and the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School. Danny Glicker's created the outfit especially for Van Sant's Harvey Milk biopic. The scene in which it is worn recreates the ensemble "November 7th, 1978, the Election Night on which he celebrated the statewide defeat of Proposition 6."

According to a handy zip-code-searching tool at the Chron, about 200 San Franciscans have stuck their noses into their neighbors' marriages by giving money to the anti-marriage campaign. Voting to end your neighbor's marriage? That's messed up. But here's what's even messier: less than 9,000 San Franciscans have donated to No On 8. Seriously, folks? How much easier could it be, especially now that they're matching donations?

And now, some nice puppies that need your help...

Feel that? Why, those are your heart stings being tugged care of us and this cool little guy over here on the right. (Who like totally did not just make us completely tear up right now, so shut up!)

-- The 2007 'Stache Bash: The regular world now knows what bears have known for a long time: mustaches are kinda cool. This even will show you just how cool they, in fact, are. Burlesque troupe Kitty Kitty Bang Bang and DJ Ross Hogg's hip hop, dancehall, roots reggae, and dub sounds intertwine with a night of 'stache championing. Tonight's bash will feature a mustache pageant, a beer foam retention test, a mustache haiku competition, and much more. Also, some of the proceeds go to charity. The hairy festivities start tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Rickshaw Stop; $10 (sliding scale).

So are we!

The kind folks over at Doc's Clock are hosting a fundraiser tomorrow night from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. to benefit Baykeeper. One hundred percent of the sales of Radeberger, Chimay Blue, Anchor Liberty (and more to be announced) will go to oil spill clean-up efforts. What a great excuse to down a couple (few) Chimays while playing a little shuffleboard.

Back in August, we told you about how some Safeway employees were mysteriously and suddenly transferred to different stores as management was becoming more demanding about checkers asking for donations.

Free range, organic, hormone-free, but not self-sustaining.

Destination Turk Street in the TL, our First Lady Maria Shriver is coming to town to celebrate Family Day ("a day to eat dinner with your children"), and in part for "It About WE", some sort of it-takes-a-village altruism awareness program designed "to make [charity] service fun, rewarding and accessible."

We can only hope that every single news outlet has printed a typo when reporting the amount of cash the United States is sending Peru, which is still experiencing severe aftershocks. As the death toll climbs past 500, with more than 1,500 reported injuries, the United States government has pledged a whopping $100,000 in support. Why don’t we just send America’s Player, Eric (with his oh-so-attractive pierced nipples) from Big Brother to help them...

A public memorial is all set to honor Bill Walsh. It'll be held at Candlestick at 11 AM on August 10th and among the speakers will be Joe Montana and Eddie De Bartolo. A private ceremony will be held on August 9th at the Stanford Memorial Church. Speakers there will not only include Montana and DeBartolo, but NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Dianne Feinstein. Rumored to attend are Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and former Secretary of State George Shultz who were friends of the Genius. Current owners of the 49ers, John and Denise York have also asked that the Governor declare a Bill Walsh Day.

Zombie Time has a chortle-worthy review of the Propaganda III art show -- a not-so-mildly anti-capitalist (and surprisingly anti-Semitic) exhibit -- which was held at, where else? The always-chic Bambuddha Lounge! You know, that sanctuary of fine dining, poolside lounging, and choice beats in the middle of dingy, deplorable poverty? The place where Gavin and a smattering of Trainas get shoved into a pool for an annual charity benefit? (Total hoot, anyone?) Anyway, it's a pretty interesting breakdown of the event.

Ritual Coffee Roasters' two locations are only about three miles apart. Not so bad on a bike, right? Well, what if you're biking with 130 pounds of coffee? Yeah, a little tougher. This Saturday, popular cafe Ritual Roasters, in conjunction with Bikes to Rwanda, is having a wacky, multi-tiered charity event that involves bike-race betting, film-watching, a raffle, and the consumption of both of our favorite beverages: booze and coffee.

We've been big fans of Good Magazine since their premier issue came out last fall. We love the inspiring stories they cover and the ways they present them -- graphics, design, and concept are given as much weight as the words. We also love that the staff is predominantly made up of young people -- much younger than we are, we might add. (Incidentally, bad-boy Al Gore III is the associate publisher.) Some recent,...

Because some of us need a warm-up of sorts for July 4, "Pinot Days," a celebration of wine made from that particular varietal, is coming to Fort Mason June 29-July 1. More than 150 winemakers will be there, with more than 400 pinots will be available for tasting, along with food.

What? More Frameline tickets? We can't stop giving these movie passes away!

Starting today, The Frameline LGBT Film Festival will be rolling out its rainbow carpet at the Castro and the lineup of guests is glittery. Besides appearances by RuPaul (for ), the fest is again offering a super smart lineup of LGBT themed fare with a special mention of the fest’s foreign language section.
