There's a totally fascinating article about this year's traffic deaths in San Francisco today, by the inimitable Rachel Gordon. At about the 2/3rd mark for the year, we've had 29 traffic collision deaths, which is already three more than the entire year's total in 2005. 2006's total includes 1 bicyclist and 15 pedestrians (including one guy washing his car outside his house, when a drunk driver hit him).

"The Contractor Is Performing Re-Work" and Other SF Transit Classics
When you wait for an hour only for two clogged buses to show up, it may seem like nobody in this town cares about getting you from place to place. But don't you think for a minute that there aren't armies of experts at work, and hundreds of thousands of dollars being wheelbarrowed around! The SF Transportation Authority's February 14th meeting is nearly upon us, as you surely know. Let's look over the agenda.
Your Commute
What did we tell you? Bay Bridge traffic was a nightmare today with the new reconfiguration of the SF offramps. Making matters worse, one of the contractors got a little delayed this morning and took an hour longer to get the cones taken down than he should have, which further backed things up.
On the MUNI side, no one knows what the effect of the fare hike's going to be. The fare strikers released numbers that showed no real effect in money earned for the first three days of the month. The strikers take the position that this shows that the strike has had an effect (since numbers should have gone up), whereas MUNI takes the position that you have to wait until the end of the month to tell, because more people may have bought FastPasses instead. We're impressed that people can read so much into so little data -- but we will say, though, that for the first time ever, our usual FastPass vendors were reporting that they'd sold out of passes by Thursday the 1st.
And hey -- they're finally opening the new Central Freeway! Ribbon-cutting ceremony today, new Octavia Street offramp opening Saturday, congestion back shortly after. Hey, did they take down that Webster Street temple yet?
Gastronomique: My Fair Lady
The dispersion of the Central Freeway and the metamorphosis of Octavia into a tree lined airy boulevard has brought a new perspective on the area. We see it in a different light; like a co-worker, whom we used to see in a casual attire and now is all dressed and made up for the office christmas party. Boy, are you sexy, we can't help but think, why didn't we ever notice before?
