Revelers braved the rain on Saturday to check out San Francisco's Chinese New Year's parade celebrating the year of he dragon. Considered one of the luckiest signs under which to be born, the year of the dragon started on January 23, 2012 and will end on February 9, 2013. Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and Yerba Buena Gardens hosts "Sustaining the Dream: Through Community and Service" today in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. The Contemporary Jewish Museum and the Museum of the African Diaspora are offering free admission all day, with special programs for children and teens, along with discounts and free activities at area retailers and shops.
San Francisco Celebrates America's Cup
Promising to bring an estimated "$1.4 billion in economic benefits and 8,000 jobs to a city facing a $379 million deficit," San Francisco celebrated the America's Cup pick on Wednesday. The Chronicle breathlessly notes: "Members of the America's Cup Event Authority joined city leaders and billionaire software mogul Larry Ellison at City Hall on Wednesday to celebrate the Dec. 31 announcement that San Francisco will host the high-profile regatta in 2013."
Day of the Dead Celebration Doomed
The Mission's annual Dia de los Muertos (that's "Day of the Dead" to most of you who live in the Mission) celebration in November is in jeopardy this year. Mission Local explains: "The city this year eliminated the grant program that funds the festival of altars at Garfield Park during the annual Day of the Dead celebration, leaving organizers scrambling to come up with $9,000."
Police Gear up for Mardi Gras Celebrants
Known as the pre-Lenten celebration where you play "Mike Tyson's Punch Out" until midnight when the Catholic kid in your neighborhood had to give up Nintendo until Easter, tonight is Mardi Gras. And people love to get shit-faced on this night, so be on the lookout for unsavory behavior.
