(You can watch Newsom's appearance here.) And next to a blue power tie, we sure as hell cannot find any connection between Gavin and the notoriously womanizing, charming-yet-slick, presumably Democrat leader of Springfield.
Though around for since 2007, Aardvark, a San Francisco-based company, is our newest obsession. It works like this: users can submit a question via email or IM. Then, Aardvark sends out your question via live chat or email other users who are experts in the "asker's extended social network." That is to say, Aardvark can help you answer almost any question. (Except, say, queries on the size of Mayor Newsom's reproductive organ.)
One of his many enterprises was set design, and Gorey did so for a theatrical version of Stoker's Dracula -- the 1977 Broadway production earned him the Tony Award for Best Costume Design; he was also a nominated for Best Scenic Design. The exhibit features "an amazing exhibition of the master cartoonist's original set and costume designs, rare production photographs and memorabilia . . . a unique behind-the-scenes look at the creative process, from Gorey's initial notes and sketches through his completed concept artwork."

Last night was the book release party for Shannon O'Leary's Pet Noir, a comic anthology of true pet crime stories published by San Francisco's very own Manic D Press. If you weren't there you missed one hip affair.

Held at the wonderful Cartoon Art Museum it was packed the entire night and Pet Noir was selling like hot cakes. Many of the artists who contributed to the book were in attendance including, Lark Pien, Mari Naomi, Trevor Alixopolus, Melanie Lewis, Damien Jay, and John Isaacson to name a few.

There are some great exhibits up at the Cartoon Art Museum right now, including The Rejection Collection, which showcases rejected New Yorker comics. The exhibit will be up until March 18th, so you've got plenty of time to catch it.

If you don't already have a copy of Pet Noir we suggest you head on over to Manic D's website pronto and buy a copy, yet another great gift showcasing lots of San Francisco talent.

The six-book series explores Asianness, whatever that is, through tales of modern cultural assimilation, over-the-top stereotyping, and ancient mythology. We couldn't put down Book 3 (fortunately it's a mini-comic, so it didn't eat up a huge chunk of the day), which tells the story of how Lai-Tsao, an unremarkable monk, convinced the trapped Monkey King to join him in his quest. Gene's cute, expressive line-drawings make the story look like it's being told by lively stuffed animals, and his dialogue is Whedonesquely pert: "Why do you come here day after day to feed us and dress our wounds? Are you too stupid to get a real job?" Hee.

The Monkey King's stories (part of the epic ) are hundreds of years old, and have been translated and retold by, what, like, billions of authors? Whatever the number, Gene's graphic adaptation surely ranks up there among the most gripping. His art's on display at the Cartoon Art Museum for at least another week -- go go go and look.

Although SFist totally applauds the inclusion of City Kayak's Bay Bridge tour, we were wishing we had seen some of our favorite haunts in print. Why not mention the Cartoon Art Museum? What about the Happy Doughnut on Townsend? (Their coconut muffins are to die for.) Or Primo Patio, which has one of the most delicious snapper sandwiches we've ever tasted? Or Vino e Cucina, which makes exquisite Italian food and offers amazing service? Or the Hotel Utah, which channels the Gold Rush spirit and offers you a burger, all for $5? None of these will break the bank.

And it's also worth noting that if you want to get dim sum on Sunday, you don't go to "Rincon Center." You go to Yank Sing, which happens to be the Rincon Center.

We're thrilled to see the neighborhood get notice in the paper of record. We just don't think you should have to spend half a paycheck to enjoy it as much as we do. Where are your favorite SoMa bargain spots?

Like how when the episode aired years ago, it aired with an unblurry bottom. Or that the plot of one of the episodes that aired last week concerned Peter (the father) envying the size of his sons’ penis and yet it was the baby’s butt that raised alarms (which reminds us of the fact that the new Daily Show book, America: The Book got banned by Wal-Mart for it’s pictures depicting members of the Supreme Court naked but not for all the “tasteless” comments about political leaders, ethnic groups, historical figures, entire countires, and religious icons). Or that one of the episodes also showed Peter’s unblurred butt (does that mean that it’s okay to show adult butts, but not okay baby butts? And if so, huh?) And finally, we should also note that the ass we’re talking about is, umm, how shall we put this, animated ass. In other words, Stewie is a CARTOON CHARACTER.
