Two young campers were killed in Yosemite National Park this morning when a oak tree's limb fell onto their tent as they slept.

According to Yosemite National Park spokesman Scott Gediman, the two minors were in a tent in Yosemite Valley's Upper Pines Campground when the limb fell at around 5 a.m. Friday.

"Park Rangers responded to the campground to provide medical assistance," Gediman said, "yet both minors were deceased."

Details on the victims are still unknown, as "the names, ages, and places of residence of the victims are not being released," the National Park Service said in a statement, and NBC4 reports that as of 12:30 this afternoon, "the Stanislaus County Corner had not yet received the bodies and couldn't offer any more information."

According to KTLA, the Upper Pines Campground is "largely wooded" and "is regularly booked within minutes of reservations becoming available." It contains 238 campsites, and either near capacity or full when the tragedy occurred, the Associated Press reports.

"August is peak season at Yosemite," the Chron reports, "where more than a half million people visit during the month, most spending time in the picturesque Valley" where this morning's incident occurred.

The LA Times reported in May that over 12 million trees in California national forests have died as a result of the current drought. According to the National Weather Service, things have been especially dry in Yosemite, temperatures in the 80s and 90s all of July and August. Temps hit a high of 97 in the park yesterday, the NWS says.

However, it would be premature to blame the drought for this one, as Gediman says an investigation must still be conducted to determine why the limb fell.

Hunter's Campfire Caused Rim Fire

Well, it seems a lone man is responsible for the Rim Fire that has (so far) burned 370 square miles of Northern California forest, and <a href="http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/article/Rim-Fire-cause-hun...

SF News

camping

fire

rim fire

wildfires

yosemite

Jay Barmann

Well, it seems a lone man is responsible for the Rim Fire that has (so far) burned 370 square miles of Northern California forest, and it's all because of an illegal campfire. The cause of the fire that broke out August 17 has been "under investigation" these past three weeks and only now do we hear that authorities have identified the culprit. He's got to feel pretty goddamn guilty.

The forest service has not revealed the man's name and say that they are still investigating.

The beginning of the fire was about three miles east of Groveland, where the man, on a hunting trip, built an illegal campfire that got out of control.

This news follows on a rumor floated by the LA Times yesterday that a pot growing operation caused the blaze. That came out of a comment made by the police chief in the tiny town of Twain Harte, who told a community gathering that this was his hunch.

We'll let you know if and when charges are filed against the hunter.

The fire, as we discussed earlier this week, is about 75% contained and it will be another couple of weeks before it is fully contained.

Mark Twain, that is, and what we remembered was his own brush with accidental arson up Tahoe way.

It's a little-known fact, if "fact" be something that can safely ascribed to Twain's baroquely embellished reminiscences of his years out West, that he was solely responsible for a horrendous forest fire on the shores of Lake Tahoe.

It was 1861, and the young not-yet-famous-writer was taking a break from the imaginary job of assisting his brother, the Secretary to the Governor of the Nevada Territory. There wasn't much government to speak of in the Territory, nor any real work at all -- but he'd heard tales of a gorgeous mountain lake paradise to the north, so one day he and a friend set out to find the spot. All was idyllic for the first two weeks of the camping trip, but then... well, perhaps we should let him tell the story in his own words -- here's Mark Twain in an excerpt from Roughing It:

By and by our provisions began to run short, and we went back to the old camp and laid in a new supply. We were gone all day, and reached home again about night-fall, pretty tired and hungry. While Johnny was carrying the main bulk of the provisions up to our "house" for future use, I took the loaf of bread, some slices of bacon, and the coffee-pot, ashore, set them down by a tree, lit a fire, and went back to the boat to get the frying-pan. While I was at this, I heard a shout from Johnny, and looking up I saw that my fire was galloping all over the premises! Johnny was on the other side of it. He had to run through the flames to get to the lake shore, and then we stood helpless and watched the devastation.
