The Library Tower (AKA the U.S. Bank Tower) in Los Angeles could soon be the second tallest building west of the Mississippi thanks to San Francisco's proposed Transbay Terminal. While the Library Tower, located in downtown Los Angeles, stands at an alluring 1,018-feet tall, the Transbay Terminal is primed to win the measuring contest at 1,200-feet. You know, we're just saying. Not to brag or anything. Anyway, our tallest skyscrapers so far are as......

Claiming that his California Street Victorian was "part of his own personality" and that its "roots went all the way to Hell," it's fitting that Church of Satan founder Dr. Anton LaVey's black house turned into one ugly-ass condo. Don't get us wrong. We're not on some transplant-ish rant about the evils of condominiums or condo conversion; we'd gladly give up our drafty, earthquake damaged Victorian for some central heating, wall to wall carpeting,......

While crews repair a damaged cable, California Street cable cars will be down for the count today, but could return to service by early tomorrow. Sad, isn't it? According to Muni spokesman Alan Siegel, "[t]he cable runs continuously (up and down the line), so we have to find the one section of the cable that's damaged ... we have to run (the cable) slowly until that section gets into the car barn." [via SFGate]......

Last night a little before midnight, Paul David Addis was arrested outside of Grace Cathedral, suspected of trying to burn down the historic church down. It seems that his neighbor called the police last night after overhearing him say something to the effect of "the cathedral wasn’t going to be there anymore." Yikes....

We stuck it in Day Around The Bay already, but thought we would let you hash it out here in its own pad, readers. It seems that, according to the preciousness that is Dan Noyes, "the Silent Drill Platoon of the U.S. Marine Corps wasn't allowed to be filmed Sept. 11 on California Street in San Francisco for a segment of its new advertising campaign." Stefanie Coyote, executive director of the San Francisco Film......

[CurbedSF] -- Argentina hosts the gay World Cup of soccer. Maricons can play sports? Well, that tears it. [Chron, via AP] -- Ed Jew fights to keep his seat on the board of supervisors. Sigh. We're sorry to pass along the news that a pedestrian is near death after having been hit by a car in the Nob Hill/Polk Gulch area at around 5:30 this morning. The pedestrian was crossing California Street at Hyde when an eastbound car going up the California Street hill plowed right into him. Witnesses reported that the pedestrian rolled up onto the hood, and then fell off after the car hit the brakes. The car......

Tonight, grab a 7:30 p.m. low cost ($4) lecture on planets, stars and brown dwarfs with Dr. Ray Jayawardhana at the JCC. We love the JCC space, because it's organized, clean, and spacious. There's a friendly vibe, too, but be prepared to pop your trunk for a bomb search if you park in the JCC lot. Origins of Planets and Brown Dwarfs at the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco, 3200 California Street. Phone:......

There's a move afoot to help save one of San Francisco's famed bars, the John Barleycorn on 1500 California Street. Apparently, after forty years or so of business, the new owner of the property wants it gone and won't even talk about renewing the new lease. A web site has been put up to help fight the power. ...

Hey, we're back from vacation! And we just missed the 5-foot sinkhole that opened up on California Street between 6th and 7th Avenues for New Year's Eve. Does anyone have pictures? In our second item of news on the city's west side, CHP and the SFPD shut down the Golden Gate Bridge to pedestrians to thwart Code Pink's peace march across the span, to commemorate the 3000th U.S. casualty in Iraq. Code Pink didn't have......

Anyone else remember that episode of "Friends" where Joey is in the musical, Freud!? We've had the song he sang (All you want is a dingle/What you envy's a schwang in our head) since we heard about the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival and the San Francisco JCC's FreudFest, and its Cinema on The Couch series, which kicks off tonight with Secrets of a Soul. From the press materials: cinematic superimpositions, symbolic imagery of razors......

Hanging on a wall of the brand new Trader Vic's near Civic Center is a copy of the restaurant's very first menu, circa 1930's Oakland. Back in the day, prices for the vaguely Polynesian cuisine hovered between 50 cents and two bucks, and as we waited to be seated we watched a tall blonde woman in a black trench coat study the old menu. Eventually, she turned to her companion and exclaimed, "I can't believe......
