Video: Here's What Birthday Cake Looks Like At Benu

Benu, San Francisco's Michelin two-star restaurant run by artist/chef Cory Lee, garnered raves from critics and diners alike since it opened in 2010. Rightfully so. The sparsely-decorated joint and Lee's avant-garde molecular gastronomy, with Asian and European touches, are unparalleled. We were fortunate enough to have our birthday dinner there over the weekend thanks to friends with fat wallets and even fatter hearts. (Per person? 12 courses for $180, add $120 more for wine pairings.) And while we typically loathe diners who snap shots of their food with their phones, we couldn't resist taking footage of Benu's whimsical birthday box and cake that arrived at our table. more ›

The Results Are In: No One Likes Cake

It seems the cake fans didn't even show up to vote in our not-at-all biased poll weighing cake vs. pie. (Or rather, they were mostly relegated to the write-in section.) Meanwhile the pie fans were eager to defend the versatile baked good with about a third of the vote going to "Any pie, any time." Add in the non-meat pie votes and over 53% of you support pie. more ›

Pre-Thanksgiving Poll: Cake vs. Pie Bakeoff

Last week we asked for your Thanksgiving Dinner Pet Peeves, and among other things, the post promptly started some dispute between pro-Pie and anti-Pie factions. While at least some portion *cough* of SFist editorial staff was against "Warm fruit" in general, one reader even took to the tipline to proclaim very succinctly: "Pie is Disgusting." more ›

150 Arrested At Yesterday's Anti-War Protest, Cake and Coffee Served

Around 150 protesters were arrested during yesterday's anti-war protest -- "a lesson on how to do it right," raves C.W. Nevius! -- during a rally that was, for the most part, a peaceful affair. Although a few hooligans hurled glass Christmas ornaments loaded with paint at San Francisco police, which seems a bit unnecessary considering how tolerant the police force here acts compared to larger cities such as Los Angeles, people were rather friendly compared to protests in the past. Scrumptious birthday cake, emblazoned with the message "Unhappy 5th Birthday Stop the War Now," oranges, and coffee were handed out to hungry passers-by. more ›
