Anyone been to the Cerrito Speakeasy Theater in El Cerrito yet? The Cerrito is the sister theater to the fabulous Parkway Theater in Oakland and opened this past November.

Not one to be one-upped in the banning department, California is now considering a ban on trans fats just like New York, Philadelphia and Denmark (Yes the entire country. Those Scandinavians are such goody-two-shoes.) Some cities in California have already taken it upon themselves to ban trans fats including –yes- America’s first Trans Fat Free City, our own Tiburon, California. Sure, the annual income of Tiburon residents is probably equal to a small country’s GNP, but at least they’re doing good with all their money and bay view homes.
We went to see John Mackey, founder/CEO of Whole Foods speak Tuesday night with journalist Michael Pollan of The Omnivore’s Dilemma fame and golden child for all things foodie and farm-related. We haven’t read Pollan’s book (it’s on our list!) but in it he takes a few jabs at Mackey and Whole Foods and how maybe Whole Foods is not the green do-gooder it claims to be. Maybe Whole Foods distorts the truth about some of its own food suppliers, and hurts the small local farmer by supporting large industrialized organic farms. (Something like that.)
We think a lot about pizza here at SFist, maybe a little too much. And since San Francisco has some pretty good pizza, we were a little nervous to move out to the East Bay. (Golden Boy, we don’t mind that you’re in North Beach, you can do no wrong with your clam pizza.)
We were browsing the Planned Parenthood Golden Gate website for information about the infamous HPV vaccine. (Yes, we’re too old to even get it. Yes, we’re confused about the whole vaccine and why it’s so expensive. And yes, we’re kind of sad that efforts to offer a vaccine in schools will most likely not happen).
First up: Anyone remember that oil refinery fire at the Chevron plant? Back in January, a crude oil unit at the Richmond Chevron plant went up in flames around 5 in the morning. Not too worry -- the official word from Chevron is that it was no biggie. Everything’s a-ok.
At first, we thought the lonely, empty feel of downtown Oakland after Five kind of depressed us. But no longer! Now we're happy to spend our happy hours (and extended happy hours) at Van Kleef's Bar on Telegraph between 16th and 17th, just close enough to the 19th Street Bart station to run and make the last BART home.
Just in time for cold season: scientists have apparently dismissed the old 'feed a cold, starve a fever' adage. We haven't been hit too bad this season (how long does cold season last anyway?). But we were nevertheless saddened that we can no longer use our sickness as an excuse to eat a whole lot.
