Come find out at this exhibit for a new book by Tony Deifell, Seeing Beyond Sight: Photography by Blind Teenagers. Accompanying the revelatory photographs is commentary and reflections by the artists. If you can't make it tonight, the show runs until May 12 but stop by around 6 until 8pm to catch a glimpse of the photographs in the book, meet the author and see clips from an upcoming documentary film. Ah yes, the weekend. Finally! It's been a hectic week-- earthquakes, landslides, the whole Kenneth Eng fiasco, those purple latex gloves-- where will it all end? We don't know but we could sure use a drink and a good old fashioned shindig-- too bad that most of the Noise Pop shows have sold out. We've put together a list of runner-ups for the weekend in the city. Sure, its not Ted Leo, Cake or The Donnas, but you can get just as drunk for half the price. Here's a rundown of the haps:
We recently snagged a copy of Jay Howell's Dog and Dog Information guide at the art/zine/DIY Goods shop Needles and Pens and LOVED it. Self-described as a guy "who really likes dogs" and "would never kick a dog's ass," Dog Information is a pocket sized instructional guide to, yep you guessed it, dogs. The semi-glossy, heavily illustrated, and locally produced mini-mag comes chock-full of canine stories, hilarious drawings and handy information (like a list of great dog names, how to fend off an attack dog, and more than you probably ever wanted to know about dog genitalia). It’s a must-have for zine enthusiasts, dog lovers, fans of the raw talent of artists like Nikki McClure and people like us, who just like instructional guides regardless of the subject. You can order it online here or swing by Needles and Pens yourself and pick up a copy. At two bucks a pop, what’s stopping you?
If there’s one thing we love, it’s the nightlife. There’s nothing better than slathering on some silver eyeliner, donning your black spiky boots and strolling out on a ripe Friday night a long week to get down with other eager, boozy people. If you aren’t up for Ruby Skye but want a little more than your average dive has to offer, shake your moneymaker at one of our top picks for the weekend.
