Laughing Squid broke the news that game designer Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons (1974)/co-founder of Tactical Studies Rules, died today at the ripe age of 69. According to LS, his death was announced on the Troll Lord Games forum. Steve (AKA the High Lord, Coburg the Undying, he who sits on the elephants back of the Castle and Crusade Society) had this to say on the forums: It is almost too much......

“It’s been a hell of a year,” Tom Higgenson of Plain White T's told Entertainment Weekly. “But I’m really looking forward to the next one, too.” Plain White T's have received a Grammy nomination for "Best Song of the Year" for the over-played, hugely popular song, "Hey There, Delilah." Higgenson should be worried about writing his next big hit before we start saying, Plain White Who? The second single of their latest album, "Our......

We know there's no shortage of young, successful, smart people in this town, but we still turn a little green with envy when we hear about guys like Ben Keighran. The Australia native is only 25 years old. After successfully launching bluepulse in his native land in 2002, he took the show on the road and ended up here in the Bay Area. Like another young tech-maestro we recently spoke to, Keighran houses his company in Silicon Valley (in fact, in YouTube's former quarters), but lives here in the city by the bay....

This week's installment: Bus comfort, back door hard-ons, and -- surprise! -- no official MUNI policy. When do you decide to make an effort to try and affect things on the bus (telling people to move back or making a fuss if people try and enter through the back door). And if you don't do one of those things, why not? This sort of thing lives in the Land of Personal Preference; there's no......

We imagine Heidi Klum Germanically intoning, "Chrisss Daaly: are you IN, or are you OWT?" Well, folks -- he's out. The Guardian has the entire text of his statement, but here's the paragraph we found the most intriguing: Sarah and I arrived at last night's meeting with the intention of announcing my entry into the race and were moved by everyone's willingness to act on faith. When I called on progressives for support for......

It's the end of the week -- and it's our last Frameline LGBT film fest ticket giveaway. The last one's a blowout, though -- it's passes for you and a friend to the sold-out closing night movie and party Sunday night! Whoooo! Frameline goes out in style, starting out with Sunday night's 7:30 p.m. Castro screening of Itty Bitty Titty Committee at the Castro, an exuberantly-idealistic radical feminist punk rocker romantic comedy by the......

Look what we just got in the SFist editor's inbox!! Jury Duty with Ed Jew! This juror, being a good citizen, had to wait two days before the case resolved before being able to talk to us about it. We love you, juror reader! By now, you’ve heard it reported that Ed Jew got called up for Jury Duty on Monday. Well, I was actually in his juror pool and got to see the whole......

For a thorough sampling of the current Bay Area rock/indie/pop/folk scene, look no further than Penny Arcade, a monthly, semi-acoustic showcase hosted by one of the cities most likeable citizens, Raul Sanchez. For the past two years, Raul has regularly packed various venues, such as the Make-Out Room -- now the event's permanent home, Bottom of the Hill, and The Hotel Utah with bands and fans alike. Tonight, come celebrate Penny Arcade's Two-Year Anniversary at......

You know we love the Chronicle around here at SFist -- where else would we get breaking news updates, steal pictures, and follow the lives of the Gettys and Trainas? So we're still very much in shock about the news that they're going to be laying off 25% of their workforce. The reason given was that they can't make enough money in advertising and other sources to cover the cost of putting out the paper.......

It's mostly this guy's fault. Jackson West, who was the first editor here at SFist, got the ball rolling with this post, "The City that Knows How." He helped to grow the site with his wit, feel for the city, and a small group of contributors. As we zero in on SFist's third anniversary, we thought it would be a great time to see what Jackson's been doing since he last graced these pages,......

Man, the San Francisco Police Officers' Association president Gary Delagnes is all over the news these days! We're setting up a Google News Alert for Delagnes even as we speak! --On Heather Fong's leadership style, Delagnes told the Chron today, "The cops in this department feel as though they are under siege.... [Fong] has a quiet, understated style. She believes diplomacy is the way to go. The cops on the street feel that diplomacy isn't......

We're hijacking SFist's Rita's District 6 election column to bring you this report from a District 6 tipster. This week's episode: Everyone Hates A House Call! From a reader in the 4th and Townsend area: Wow, Rob Black just came and visited us. I think it was the one running for Chris Daly's seat, and not the porn star. Have you met him? What do you think? He seemed nice, and I like that he's......

We recently sat down with Muni's executive director, Nathaniel P. Ford, to ask him some of the questions our readers and we have been dying to get the answers to. We spent enough time with him that we felt it made sense to publish our conversation in serial form, as opposed to one oppressively long interview. This is the first segment in the series. Nathaniel Ford: Thanks for coming in. Eve Batey: Oh, thank......

Being a relatively recent gratuate to cable from rabbit ears, we're not sure how that whole In Demand thing works, but we've been tempted to figure it out ever since we heard about Friend of SFist Harmon Leon's stint on "Juiced", a hidden camera prank show starring OJ Simpson. That's right, Harmon and OJ, sharing the screen. In Harmon's words: Some (let’s call them the sane) would be apprehensive to work with OJ. But......

068987474X.jpg Dear Political Junkie: I'm a very attractive woman with a great job in New York and lots of dating prospects. The problem is my ex. I mean, he said it was over and I should just go and live my life. But I know he wants me back. I just know it! I mean, we didn't even really ever break up -- he has some really mean friends at the office who never liked me (they were totally jealous of me), and if I could just get him away from them, I know everything would be perfect again. I mean, he passed all these laws about pit bulls, just so he could get me back in town. And he took me out to dinner and drinks and we had so much fun! And I flew out for his birthday! He was so happy to see me! And when he needs someone by his side for big social occasions, guess who he calls? How do I get rid of all the people trying to keep us apart? Signed, Your Biggest Fan. Our answer after the jump!...

So, yesterday the a Board of Supervisors committee approved a proposed ordinance Monday that would require seafood restaurants to post English, Spanish, and Chinese signs warning of the dangers of mercury contaminated fish. The proposed ordinance is part of Proposition 65 (otherwise known as Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986), described by the Chron as "a state law approved by voters in 1986 that obliges businesses selling products that contain unsafe......

A while back, we had interviewee Michele Alaniz question the San Francisco obsession with the burrito. We know, we know -- worshipping burritos is such a gringo thing to do. But SFist is all about what's really going on down in Mexico, and you'd honestly be surprised at how similar it is to what's going on up here. We're talking pie, fresh squeezed juice and sandwiches. We admit that our column has been south-of-the-border-centric,......

By a 2-1 margin, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors Finance Committee Ok-a-lee-do-keed a proposal to give one million dollars out of the San Francisco General Fund for tsunami relief. The two supervisors voting to spend the money were Chris Daly (who proposed the idea) and Tom Ammiano. Voting no was Supervisor Sean Elsbernd. Next step is a full vote in front of the board and then approval by the Mayor. Says Daly: "A donation......

Now that we've finally gotten that good time over with and those pesky Holidays are at last behind us, we can get back to the things that are really important.
