SFist Finds: Burke-Lewis Apartment Manager Hate

SFist Finds: Burke-Lewis Apartment Manager Hate

A reader snapped these pictures taken inside of their infamous Burke-Lewis Apartments on Bush Street. It seems that someone in the building printed one of the many negative reviews (this one being almost a year old) of their building and apartment manager, and tacked it up in the laundry room. Then, the apartment manager in question pulled it down, copied it, blew it up, wrote all over it, and taped it by the elevator. more ›

We Read The Weeklies

It's Got to Be the Morning After

We're going to do this a little differently this time around as we don't know who really cares that much about either team right now. Instead, we're going to point out why you should still care. So here’s our Top 5 Reasons to Still Watch the Giants. more ›

Marke Bieschke On The Presidential Debates

Marke Bieschke On The Presidential Debates

Gay marriage, GLBTQQGQQ$#@ discrimination, HIV issues, queers in the military, Donna McKechnie (we can only assume), health care, and more are what's on tap for tonight's presidential debate. Disgusting, we know. But 84% of eligible gays voted in the last election, so why not? (Who knew gays could even vote? Huh.) more ›

Chicken v. Wolf v. Audience

Chicken v. Wolf v. Audience

Last night's innovative Chicken John/Josh Wolf Mayoral debate brought in "a dozen or so citizens," artists, and political fetishists. Even though it was on a Sunday night, anyone who cares about politics, SF, and progressiveness shouldn't have missed it. more ›

SF Doc Charged In Donor's Death

SF Doc Charged In Donor's Death

San Francisco transplant surgeon Dr. Hootan Roozrokh was criminally charged on Monday with "dependent adult abuse." He's accused of prescribing way, way too man drugs to speed up the death of a developmentally-disabled man. Why? So he could harvest his organs. (Ew.) You can read SFGate's breakdown here or the LA Times' story here. more ›

In A Strange Twist: Frameline Needs Volunteers for Up Your Alley

In A Strange Twist: Frameline Needs Volunteers for Up Your Alley

Frameline -- purveyors of the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival and many hosted-bar opening- and closing-night parties that we’ve crashed (but we hear the films are great, too!) -- needs your help. This year they will receive funding from the profits of the Up Your Alley Fair -- happening on Sunday, July 29 -- if they bring in a certain number of volunteers. more ›

Propaganda III: an Anti-American 4th of July Review

Propaganda III: an Anti-American 4th of July Review

Zombie Time has a chortle-worthy review of the Propaganda III art show -- a not-so-mildly anti-capitalist (and surprisingly anti-Semitic) exhibit -- which was held at, where else? The always-chic Bambuddha Lounge! You know, that sanctuary of fine dining, poolside lounging, and choice beats in the middle of dingy, deplorable poverty? The place where Gavin and a smattering of Trainas get shoved into a pool for an annual charity benefit? (Total hoot, anyone?) Anyway, it's a pretty interesting breakdown of the event. more ›

Hot Stuff: Food Blog Round Up

Hot Stuff: Food Blog Round Up

Just in time for 4th of July festivties, we can fawn all over Bunrab's Burger Holy Grail, billed as "the ongoing quest for the finest burgers in the land." Bonus points for breaking it out into two logical categories, fast-food and posh ("you get to eat these before you pay for them"). More beefy inspiration comes from Chez Denise Et Laudalino and Food Notebook. Cate's back online at Burritophile with another, non-meaty breakdown for us: the three options for vegetarians at burrito joints. Yes, yes, tofu is one of the options. more ›

A Little San Francisco History On PBS

A Little San Francisco History On PBS

Every now and then, we try to watch the national news so we'll get the jokes on the Daily Show the next day. So, even though Comedy Central's fake news outlets are on break this week, we were watching the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer last night and turning away when the Saddam Hussein on the gallows footage was on (like a game of hangman, we keep expecting a half-completed word to appear under his feet, with the letters S, T, and E filled in) -- when what comes on for the second news segment of the show but a career biography of Nancy Pelosi! more ›

Hot Stuff: Food Blog Round Up

Hot Stuff: Food Blog Round Up

Kick those schlumpy tryptophan and Monday induced sighs and blahs to the curb and check out Bacon Press’s Food Porn. We can’t much bear thoughts and photos of turkey, but the tantalizing pics of vibrant veggies and wholesome soup are pleasing. Barely a trace of heartburn there, family and friends-who-are-like-family (we’re trying to be a bright and happy holiday trooper here). Such healthful dishes may soothe and perhaps allow us to ease into our ill barely fitting Levi’s sooner rather than later. After zipping up, we’d never call the authorities from learning about food related theft in another newish Bacon Press Post so appropriately named: Steal this Brie. more ›

We Survived Being On Local TV (So Far): A True Story

We Survived Being On Local TV (So Far): A True Story

We had a brief moment last summer when we felt like delving into fame whorism. As of right now, mere hours before our television debut, we're wondering why--and we're on the verge of a breakdown. We certainly don't think we'll be as smooth tonight on Check Please! Bay Area as friend of SFist, Burritophile Dan Johnson, was on Bay Area Backroads last Saturday. We're not experts; we just like to eat. more ›

SFist Watches: TV Premieres Tonight

SFist Watches: TV Premieres Tonight

Fall premiere week has officially begun and our TiVos are practically shivering in anticipation. (That would explain the fairly regular stop-and-start recordings we've been getting recently. Perhaps we should invest in one of those dual-tuner jobies? Sweet!) more ›

The SFist NFL Preview: What the Experts Say

The SFist NFL Preview: What the Experts Say

Our favorite part of the beginning of any sports season is scanning through magazine after magazine for previews of our favorite teams. What will the experts say? Is our team as good as we think it is? As bad? Should we have hope or despair? And who kidnapped Peter King and replaced him with some skinny dude? So this year, as we approach NFL '06, we read through the experts to see what they have to say about our two local teams. This year, they all pretty much said the same thing about both of our local teams. In fact, we could sum it up in two words: last place. more ›

Journalist Josh Wolf Jailed for Video

Journalist Josh Wolf Jailed for Video

Screw getting Dooced, Josh Wolf has set the blogger bar a bit higher than getting fired. He's been jailed. Judge William Alsup, presiding over a federal grand jury case investigating the attempted burning of a police car and assault of an officer during an anti-war protest last year, has held Mr. Wolf in contempt of court, and ordered him imprisoned. The crime? Refusing to answer a subpoena from the U.S. Attorney's office for raw footage of the event and to stand witness before the Grand Jury. more ›

Your Commute: Fire Drive With Me

106730.jpg This news item combines all our favorite things: commuter news, SUVs, cigarette regulation, the mayor's quality of life plans, and a generous espresso shot of schadenfreude to boot! Hooray! Did anyone see a flaming car spinning out of control on the Bay Bridge at the Harrison Street exit in the City this morning? A man finishing up his cigarette in his Ford Expedition around 10:30 a.m. today decided to defy Mayor Newsom and litter in our beautiful city by throwing the still-lit butt out the window. Unfortunately, the cigarette flew back into the car, and set his back seat on fire. The driver panicked, pulled over to the leftmost lane (which is not a breakdown shoulder on the bridge), and jumped out of the still-moving car. The car then crashed into the guardrail at the end of the bridge and burst into flames. The Harrison Street exit was closed for an hour while firefighters doused the flames. The driver is fine, except that his head was singed (and he's out a car). The authorities say that throwing a lit cigarette out a car window is a misdemeanor and the driver will be charged. In the court of SFist public opinion, though, we find the driver -- ha ha ha ha ha! Here's what to do if your car catches on fire: pull over and call for help. We will concede that the hints do not say "come to a complete stop" first. more ›
