This story has been updated throughout.

Police in pursuit of an Outer Sunset vandal arrested a man Tuesday morning for the crime, and reported that he was also in possession of a switchblade and some fireworks.

San Francisco Police Department spokesperson officer Robert Rueca says that at 1:17 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to the 1700 block of 42nd Avenue, which is between Moraga and Noriega Streets on reports of a vandalism in progress.

When police arrived, Rueca say they discovered "a suspect on the block matching the description" of the vandal. He was taken into custody at the scene.

Rueca says that the suspect, a 31-year-old man who Rueca says also had an outstanding arrest warrant, was also carrying a switch blade and "consumer fireworks."

An initial SFPD report described the items as "Barrel Bombs," a term most commonly used to describe cylindrical explosive devices made from a barrel and containing shrapnel. In a call to SFist Tuesday morning, Rueca says that that term was used by police in error, and that the suspect "only had the kind [of fireworks} you put on the ground and then they sparkle."

[Update] Bomb Threat At DNA Lounge Turns Out To Be Hoax

Now police want help tracking down the culprit.

SF News

bomb threat

bombs

crime

DNA Lounge

sfpd

soma

Jack Morse

On Friday, the SFPD shut down 11th Street between Harrison and Folsom Streets starting around 3:30 p.m. due to a bomb threat at a specific business, which turned out to be DNA Lounge. According to a recap of the circus that ensued from the department Friday night, the individual claimed to be inside the business and to be "armed with a gun and a bomb."

Nearby office workers and adjacent buildings and businesses were evacuated, as was DNA, and multiple Muni lines had to be re-rerouted as a result. As a shelter-in-place order was given to the rest of the area, the situation began getting broad coverage on Twitter and broadcast media over the next several hours, as you can see from tweets below.

Ultimately, police were unable to re-establish contact with the individual, but not before the "SFPD Hostage - Crisis Negotiation Team, Tactical Unit, Bomb Squad, Specialist Team, and Explosive Detection K9's along with Tenderloin and Southern Police Station personnel and SFFD paramedics responded to the scene."

By 6:30, the building was searched and nothing and no one was found. At 6:50, the owner of DNA tweeted the following:

The Southern Station investigation team is hoping that someone can help them with any information about this person who made the threat, and you can do so by calling the SFPD's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or by texting a tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD.

After a suspicious bag was found at Lotta's Fountain this morning, the bomb squad was called to Market and Kearny and the annual celebration noting the anniversary of the Great Quake of 1906 was moved posthaste.

According to KRON 4 Morning News, "a person with dark-colored clothing" was seen leaving a bag near Lotta's Fountain just as the ceremony was about to begin at around 2:45 a.m. Thursday morning. This, of course, brought to mind the Boston Marathon bombings. Robotics and bomb-sniffing dogs were called in and the bag was searched. Luckily, nothing dangerous was found inside the bag.

The annual nod to the Great Quake of 1906 was then moved to Union Square and was scheduled to take place at 5:30 a.m..

Speaking of the annual ceremony, this year was the first time that no survivors were in attendance. Only three known survivors of the earthquake are still alive.

The box was found around 10:45 a.m., and SFPD cleared the area at 1:10 p.m. and blew up the box.

Since the fort used to be an active military zone as a part of the national coastal defense system, it's reportedly pretty common for old bombs to be discovered in the area. It's likely that these flares recently fell from a naval vessel though, as they are apparently not from the same era as the typical old bombs found at the fort.

CNN has obtained a copy of a report being delivered to Congress this morning detailing how undercover agents managed to sneak bomb-making components into ten "Level IV" federal office buildings in four different, unnamed U.S. cities (including, quite possibly, our own). The agents then went ahead and assembled the bombs in restrooms and trotted about the buildings' offices with the improvised devices in their briefcases, unbeknownst to all concerned.

This was all an effort by the Government Accountability Office to call out the Federal Protective Service, or FPS, which has been known to be an ill-managed agency with poorly trained security staff. The kicker: the report includes a photo of a federal guard asleep at his post, and another incident of a guard who accidentally sent an infant in a carrier through an x-ray machine when he wasn't paying attention. Awesome job!

UC Davis Dorm Evactuated After Explosives Are Found

Mark Woods, an 18-year-old UC Davis economics major, was arrested today after authorities found a couple of pipe bombs in his dorm room, going well above and beyond the school's no hot plate policy.

SF News

bombs

crime

davis

explosives

pipe bomb

the police

uc

UC Davis

Brock Keeling

Mark Woods, an 18-year-old UC Davis economics major, was arrested today after authorities found a couple of pipe bombs in his dorm room, going well above and beyond the school's no hot plate policy.

More than 400 students were quickly evacuated from their dorm rooms last night after a n anonymous tipster called the police about the explosive materials. Woods, now facing two felony charges, including possessing explosives to make a bomb, meant no harm, according to his roommate:

Woods' roommate Robert Chao says that Woods wasn't plotting to do harm to anyone. "He had no intention of blowing anything up. He had no ill intentions as a person. That's not him."

Poor kid. We'd normally rail against him for acting so foolish, but seeing as how there's little to do in Davis aside from huffing glue and giving cows makeovers, we feel bad for Woods. But only a little. Anyway, goes on to report that "[a]uthorities believe it was an isolated incident and said there was no need to detonate any devices." And the evacuated students? They pulled "couches together in the dining hall and passed the time with movies." Ah, the college life.
