Newsom Demands Answers from PG&E

Newsom Demands Answers from PG&E

With the second major underground fire in four years roaring last Friday -- spectacularly so, we might add -- Mayor Gavin Newsom wants some answers from PG&E. If you recall, in August 2005, an underground PG&E vault blaze occurred in the Financial District, critically injuring a passerby. That fire, according to CBS 5, "was caused by high levels of moisture in the oil inside the high-voltage chambers on the transformer." A follow-up investigation reveals that five additional transformers within in San Francisco "had high moisture levels" as well. Anyway, Newsom claims to be unhinged by last week's manhole blaze, saying. "I've been at this a lot as mayor of San Francisco, some more problematic events, not just this event. We'll work through them." PG&E promises a thorough investigation. Polk Street at O'Farrell remains closed for investigation. more ›

Apple Campus Catches Fire

For all you Mac zealots users out there, we have some disheartening news. The Apple campus in Cupertino caught fire last night. Fortunately, the three-alarm blaze caused no injuries, only some smoke damage. But security at the compound was so heavy last night that reporters had trouble getting the story out. According to Brittney Gilbert at CBS 5," Word has it that security was so tight at Apple headquarters that officials there called the cops on KRON staff members who were on the scene to report on the blaze." OMG, censorship! But to be fair, it was KRON4 News, so, you know, grain of salt. (CBS 5) more ›

Images From Wednesday's Inner Mission Blaze

Another fire hit the Mission District, but this time no one was displaced or injured. It seems that Giant's Jewelers on 24th Street (between South Van Ness and Capp, next to the Napper Tandy) caught fire. Photog Chris Brennan captured the awful brilliance of firefighters arriving at the scene, the welding of axes and ladders (just like they do in cartoons!), and virile men fighting the blaze. Fortunately, no one was hurt, save for some sparkling gems, but check out Brennan's superb shots of the fiery action. more ›
