-- Cinewhores Present Midnight Cowboy (1970): Although tame by today's smut-filled standards -- oh, you heard right! -- Midnight Cowboy has the distinction of being the only X-rated film to have ever snagged the Best Picture at the Academy Awards. The film -- about the friendship between Joe, a rookie New York City hustler, and Ratso, a terminally-ill New Yorker -- is prefaced by a reading by queer author Kirk Read. (Oh, and Sylvia Miles is simply fucking awesome in Midnight Cowboy.) Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at ATA; $5-$20 (all donations go to benefiting the St. James Infirmary.)

--The heart of rock and roll is still beatin' -- at Stern Grove this afternoon. It's HUEY LEWIS AND THE NEWS!!!! The free show starts at 2, but we assume folks'll be lining up pretty early, beach towels and folding chairs at the ready. Stern Grove's at Sloat and 19th.

show at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts on Friday. Spoken by one of the 19 teenagers from YBCA’s Young Artists at Work, they set the tone for the evening. The opening attracted an unusually diverse crowd, and while mingling among the black leather and activists, we felt as if we had stepped back into 1968. That is, until we shelled out $6 for a crappy Cabernet in a plastic Dixie cup, and were abruptly brought back to the present.

Our friends at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts are going all out this Friday, with their opening night party for their Black Panther Rank and File show (we'd give you links to all this, but the YBCA site is annoyingly formatted in frames).
