With its chic industrial/gothic design, the new “market hall” style Whole Foods that opened recently near Lake Merritt in Oakland certainly could be used for a set on the next Batman flick.

(Note: we won’t be defending or condemning the corporation itself here. We instead refer you to Mark Morford’s sharp analysis of the friendly giant.)

We wish we’d known about the opening day festivities, what with an appearance by Paul Bartoli, and free reusable shopping bags to the first 5,000 customers, we would have stood in line. As it was, we made it to the store about 10 days after the September 26 shindig.

On one visit, our husband’s response to the expansive layout, high ceilings, pod-like arrangement of products, and high design was this: “It’s the first Whole Foods I’ve been to that doesn’t make me want to chew my leg off.”

Well said. Although the circular layout could also potentially make us a little stir crazy. As it was, we got dizzy on our first few visits. On one occasion, we were halfway around before realizing we needed a hand-basket, and had to backtrack all the way round to the start to retrieve one.

The main focus of the store seems to be ready-to-eat. There’s so much prepared and ready to be prepared food -- giant steam tables, a pizza and salad and smoothie bar, a Japanese food bar, the much-touted Bistro where we have yet to try the steak frites. Somehow we can’t quite picture either sitting down inside the store to eat such a dish, nor schlepping it home for take out as it seems a shame for such lovely fresh fare to sit and sweat in a box, as compared to the pre-made items which have been sweating a bit already.

Vive Le Bon Anniversaire!

We celebrated our birthday this week with a French-Food-Themed evening out, East Bay style that we thought you might like to try, too. Theater on Shattuck. (This theater has the tastiest popcorn we've tried lately, by the way. Not too salty. No odd aftertaste.)

If you are even half the food-geek that we are, you must see this film. But to watch so much decadently beautiful animated gourmet cooking, and NOT follow it up with a delicious French meal, well, that would just be silly, wouldn't it?

6:30 p.m.: Exit theater. Walk eight blocks to Liaison Bistro. Dine.

Our group of 12 unanimously enjoyed the meal, the convivial atmosphere, the knowledgeable and helpful wait staff. And we appreciated that the restaurant is certified "green" in its operations practices, and serves naturally raised meats and wild-caught or sustainably farmed seafood.

For appetizers, we scarfed down Les Moules ($11.50): a large bowl of steamed P.E.I. mussels in white wine, garlic, shallots, and "pastis" (an anise-flavored liqueur). Dipping bread into that sauce was so pleasurable that we fought the bussers off twice to keep them from clearing the "empty" dish from our table. We also liked the Napoleon des Tomates($13): a tower of heirloom tomatoes layered with pistou (the French version of pesto) and doused in a light goat cheese fondue sauce.

After the jump: More of what we ate and the cool movie-related cooking toys we hate ourselves for loving.
Ratatouille

Chapeau! on Clement: Wow!

A few photos of French restaurant Chapeau! on Clement

Arts & Entertainment

Air France

bistro

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

Jim Herd

photos

Pics

San Francisco

Jim

The restaurant Chapeau! on Clement near 15th Avenue is a little cozy, like a narrow-bodied, single-aisle Air France Concorde jet. But also like the Concorde, Chapeau! has impeccable service and Gallic charm. This popular and reasonably priced French bistro is one San Francisco's treasures.

Weird Fish is a combination seafood/vegan restaurant at 18th and Mission -- and the fish isn't really that weird. For brunch, there were shrimp, tilapia, catfish, and crab options, along with an oyster, mushroom, and spinach scramble, which is what we ended up deciding on. (We didn't go vegan, but you could substitute tofu for fish in any dish, and they had vegan sausage as well.) The food was good, the waitstaff friendly, and the clientele hipster -- what's not to love?

We then caught a 49 bus right outside the restaurant and zipped on over to Symphony Hall, where we grouped the attendees into two classes: Baby's First Concert and Sulky Siblings Of Youth Symphony Members. We and our companion were probably the only people there without kids.

After the jump: No Vanessa Getty, a claymation YouTube clip of Peter and the Wolf, and a picture of our oyster/spinach scramble! (We just got our first digital camera.)

We thought it was a lot, but we were very far from being exhaustive: we snubbed -- for now -- the new Provence, on Guerrero, or the Annex, a budget French restaurant on Valencia. We ignored the new menu and new ownership at the Last Supper Club, or the new roof garden at Medjool. And looking ahead, the defunct Alma will re-open as a French bistro, and Tartine will open another outlet, we think it is in the short-lived Urban Forage locale on Valencia. This is way out of control, we can hardly keep track. But it is oh so convenient for us, as we can visit these places without leaving our neck of the woods.

We promised last week to focus more thoroughly on some of the new offerings in the Mission. We start with Maverick, an "American eatery & wine bar" which took over the old Limon space on 17th Street. We imagine the real-estate agent’s pitch for the space involved "ideal starter restaurant," and "a first step to get into this hot hospitality market," as Maverick is the first restaurant owned by its two partners, chef Scott Youkilis and General Manager Mike Pierce, and they seem ambitious enough to soon outgrow the tiny space. They were last working at Sociale, the affable Mike told us when we scouted the place. Maverick is American, as its name indicates: it is Tom Cruise’s character in Top Gun, who struggles to repress his obvious gayness, and ends up confused, frustrated and blowing shit up. But sexual repressiveness diverted into violence, as American as it is, is not the topic, so back to the restaurant. Its Web site provides another explanation for the name, but it’s kind of lame compared to ours.

Gastronomique: Mangeurs d'ail, et fiers de l'être.

In the movie Barbershop, Isaac is this white guy who talks, dresses and acts like the other characters, even though they all are African-Americans.
