Starting this fall, your Pacific Gas and Electric will take a leap, and not because you're leaving all the lights on. On Thursday, the California Public Utilities Commission voted to let the SF-based utility jack up their prices, ostensibly for "safety improvements." As you can imagine, many people are angry about this. And maybe you will be too, especially after we take a look at some of the numbers.

$15.6 billion: PG&E's revenue from last year

$814 million: The profit PG&E posted on that revenue

$4.84 billion: The amount of additional money PG&E told the California Public Utilities Commission they wanted to get from customers

$2.37 billion: The amount of additional money the PUC agreed on Thursday that PG&E could demand from its customer base

3: The number of years over which that $2.37 billion boost will be spread

$4.50: The amount the average PG&E gas bill will increase, starting in September, with additional hikes expected in 2015 and 2016

$3: The amount the average PG&E electric bill will increase, starting in October, with additional hikes expected in 2015 and 2016 (so, if you have gas and electric from PG&E, expect an increase of around $7.50 this fall)

$5.23: The amount of an additional monthly increase for PG&E gas customers "for gas storage and transmission," that the PUC is expected to approve or decline next year

An anti-gay group in California have deceived citizens into thinking they are signing a petition to help stop child molestation and give stronger sentences for molesters. This, sadly, is not the case. "In fact, they are signing a petition to repeal SB 48, the state's just-approved LGBT education bill," reports Joe My God. SB 48 would allow classrooms to teach the contribution and history of gays (as well as disabled people) in the state of California. The misguided anti-gay effort is part of Stopsb48.com. Cuomo announced passage of the Marriage Equality Act today by a margin of 33 to 29, granting same-sex couples the freedom to marry under the law. New York is the sixth and largest state to approve gay marriage, effectively doubling the number of Americans living in states with the freedom to marry.

Gay New York citizens can now enjoy hundreds of rights, benefits, and protections that have been limited to married couples of the opposite sex. Says Cuomo:

New York has finally torn down the barrier that has prevented same-sex couples from exercising the freedom to marry and from receiving the fundamental protections that so many couples and families take for granted. With the world watching, the Legislature, by a bipartisan vote, has said that all New Yorkers are equal under the law. With this vote, marriage equality will become a reality in our state, delivering long overdue fairness and legal security to thousands of New Yorkers.

I commend Majority Leader Dean Skelos and Minority Leader John Sampson for their leadership and Senator Tom Duane for his lifetime commitment to fighting for equality for all New Yorkers. I also thank Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Assemblyman Danny O’Donnell for ushering this measure through their chamber.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission surprise-attacked the city with a new plan to"increase water and sewer rates for both residential and commercial customers at its meeting Tuesday," according to reports. The reason? Seismic upgrades. Apparently it will cost the city of San Francisco $4.4 billion to make sure your poop, pee, and drinking water don't mix when the big one hits. So expect a 13% increase in your bill after July. Also, it is SFist's official stance that you do not reduce your time in the shower to save water. (Shudder.)

Over the past few years, 19th Avenue -- which connects San Mateo County with San Francisco and pierces commercial and residential sections of the city rife with foot traffic -- has played host to numerous traffic accidents and several pedestrian deaths. Yee's bill, which was initially vetoed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, will go into effect at the start of Jan. 9. Oh joy. That's less than one year away!

But don't fret, pedestrians of San Francisco: next month the California Department of Transportation will start construction on a swank new series of pedestrian-safety improvements, including "countdown signals at 10 intersections, more visible traffic signals, and fiber optic cables to coordinate traffic signals," according to CBS5. Add said improvements to this double-fine bill, and 19th Ave. sounds safe enough to babysit your newborn.

Also, great timing there, powers that be. It's only been almost a half a decade since we brought this up, and something is finally getting done about it. Kudos!
