New Bike Lanes and Racks To Come From Stimulus Funds?

Three years after a court-ordered injunction on citywide bicycle improvement projects, an impact study by the SFMTA is expected to be adopted by the City as early as June. Just to back up, this study was demanded by a group of non-cycling citizens--and validated by a Superior Court Judge--who challenged the City's Transit First policy, asking that City Hall examine the impact of all bicycle improvement projects on everything from traffic flow to parking availability. According to Timothy Papandreou and Judson True of the SFMTA, the first of the proposed projects--including new bike lanes, a bicycle sharing program, and retiming of certain traffic signals to benefit cyclists--could now begin as soon as the new budget takes effect on July 1.

Market & Octavia Bike Lane Removal Request Denied by Judge

The controversial plan to remove the bike lane at Market & Octavia was denied by Judge Peter Busch. At least for now.

Emergency Rally to Save Market and Octavia Bike Lane, Friday, 1/16

We typically poke fun at coalitions. You know, for giggles. But not SF Bike Coalition. Because they do good work. Great work, in fact.

Thanks, Caltrans (or whoever), for replacing a smoothly paved bike lane with a bumpy, hand-packed nuisance.

We snapped the above photo at everyone's favorite traffic mess - the Arco station on Fell and Divisadero. The sign on the fence reminded me of photos we'd seen of gas shortages back before we were sentient, but happily for drivers, this isn't the harbinger of shortages or rationing. The station will soon finish with their repair work, and people will once again be able to fill their H2s for $.02/gallon less than at the station across the street! Sadly, that means the traffic mess will return - today was the first time in a very long time that we'd gone up the Fell Street bike lane without having to dodge out into traffic to avoid a car blocking the lane or the sidewalk.
