Among local drinkers, the short-lived, ultra-tiny, always delicious Tenderloin bar Big remains a minorly mythic thing in our memories — ephemeral as a pop-up, gushed over, and gone before its time. Well, it's seen some reincarnations since its 2013 shutter, most notably in the form of SRO, the small bar-within-a-bar at SoMa's Oddjob, which is owned by the same former owners of Big — who are also planning on reviving the name and style of Big in the ultra-divey current location of the 21 Club at Turk and Taylor, but more on that later. And now, as Eater shows us, another reincarnation comes from the two bartenders who actually made Big what it was, Brian Felley and Mo Hodges. The two have opened up a similarly small, tucked-away cocktail den called Benjamin Cooper (398 Geary Street, 2nd floor), where they will continue to delight cocktail nerds with their bespoke creations from here on out.

The place only has 14 barstools and another dozen or so seats, and it's up some stairs past the reception desk inside the Hotel G. Unlike Big, Benjamin Cooper does have a menu, but no doubt Felley and Hodges will be happy to go off-menu to fit your desires if you like. The menu includes some seriously out-of-the-box stuff like a bottled spin on "Zima" (gin, clarified lime cordial, genepy, lime zest), and a shot of tequila with a "sangrita" of raw oyster, dehydrated tomato powder, espelette pepper, sugar, citric acid, and magnesium powder. There's also a daily oyster selection that can be ordered at the bar, and plenty of nice liquors to choose from, as well as beer, wine, and champagne.

They're open every day except Sunday, starting at 5 p.m. on weekdays, and 6 p.m. on Saturdays.

And the name, by the way, is just a combination of two family names from Hodges' and Felley, and they've used it to create a fictional character whom you can see sketched on Instagram, who serves as a kind of mascot.

Big, unofficially the City's best little bar, will close tonight. And they will celebrate their going-out party with a day- and night-long bash. But fear not, folks, as this won't be the last you hear of Big.

As Eater points out: "Because of Big, we were introduced to the talents of barman Brian Felley, and he and partners Peter Glikshtern and Jeff Whitmore are going to open something else, likely on Mid-Market, in a matter of months."

Also, Inside Scoop has more on tonight's festivities: "The bar is extending hours for its finale, and will open at noon today. All-day, there will be $5 tacos from Tango & Stache, along with the requisite cocktail fun. And then, Big will close, ending a fun little run that was cut too short; it’s the kind of place that would’ve been a good mainstay for San Francisco."

SFist talked to Josh Oakley, of Tango & Stanche, who gave us his thoughts on the bar's closure thusly: "BIG set the precedent. It shall be the best biggest littlest cocktail bar in San Francisco. And I for one, will miss it terribly."

See why tonight.

You have almost exactly one month to check out the smallest little bar of cute (the owners and bartenders would HATE that descriptive) in the world. It's tough — built Ford tough, one might say — but also downright darling. A seamless mix of two opposing elements, really. Chaos, control, chaos, control.

For starters, the drinks made there are some of the best in the city. And the stemware is as gorgeous as it is diverse. (Who care about stemware? WE CARE ABOUT STEMWARE.) And secondly, Tango & Stache will be there tonight (disclosure: your SFist editor often works with T&S on weeknights, helping take your cash for savory, booze-soaking food), serving espolon-braised pork on duck fat tostada shells, with spicy slaw, fried duck egg and fresh horseradish (for $9) and fried pig ears too boot.

We should point out the, however slim, a reprieve is possible. Stay tuned.

How so? Well, the candy company will reveal a 7,000-pound lollypop in the city of San Francisco in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the World's Largest Lollipop. As it now stands, at least according to '90s-era site JunkFoodNews.net, Jolly Rancher has the standing record for the World's Largest Lollipop, certified by Guinness World Records at 4,016 pounds and measuring 62.8 inches in diameter (over 5 feet square) and 18.9 inches thick.

See's Candies' concoction promises to be even bigger.

Though the company cannot yet confirm, the massive sucker could be unveiled in Justin Herman Plaza. Which seems ideal since it's now the go-to place for all things wacky. The creation of the well-endowed candy will happen on July 10th, with a judging by Guinness on July 12th. Just what flavor said lolli will be shall be revealed on July 20th.

Bigfoot Captured (Maybe)

During a press conference in Palo Alto today, two men from the South, Matt Whitton and Rick Dyer, stand by their claim that they have the Bigfoo...

misc

big

bigfoot

creature

foot

lore

man ape

myth

the south

Brock Keeling

During a press conference in Palo Alto today, two men from the South, Matt Whitton and Rick Dyer, stand by their claim that they have the Bigfoot bagged and tagged next to the Arm & Hammer Baking Soda box inside their freezer. Recently, it seems, the two "friends" were hiking and came across the man-ape corpse with open wounds. Sadly, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Reserve agency will not investigate Bigfoot's death because "it is not a federal priority.
