What's up? Great. So...huh, how do we put this delicately without hurting anyone's feelings? Ahem, the next time there's a truck in the middle of Civic Center selling nothing but delicious waffles, and no one mentions it to us before said truck sells out of said waffles? We will go Carrie on all of you. (With you in the Betty Buckley role, of course, because you are the most caring readers.) Why, this looks downright tasty! And in the middle of Civic Center? Who knew?!

According to Eater goes on to say, "this morning at Civic Center Farmer's market I came across a waffle truck! The man at the truck said that they are usually at the Marin Farmer's Market, but today was their first day at Civic Center." And all sorts of crispy, fluffy goodness. Anyway, be on the lookout for it next week, and read more about it here.

SFist Photo: CA's New Law for Lighting Bikes at Night

News of a new law expanding the requirements for bicycle lighting.

Arts & Entertainment

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Betty

bicycle

Bicycle Coalition

bike

California

Cycling

Fillmore

Governor

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

Jim Herd

Law

lights

media

Pics

San Francisco

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition

Schwarzenegger

Jim

SFist Watches: Your Locals On Reality TV

Let's start with "Beauty and the Geek," and our rubberband-loving local Josh. We should really be enjoying this more than we are." Occasionally cute, occasionally funny, it was never consistently anything. And we especially hated how they decided to change an entire storyline during the middle of the season with the introduction of Rebecca "She's my sister! She's my brother!" Romijn as the tranny heir to the magazine. This is one of those shows we may have to drop this year.

Much like "Grey's Anatomy," which premieres at 9 p.m. Last season was overshadowed by the Isaiah Washington controversy, but we mustn't forget the egregious things that happened within the context of the show. Like how Izzie Stevens turned into a completely hateful character who could sleep with her married friend, and still remain totally self-riotous. And everyones treatment of the perfectly lovely Callie was just shameful. We wish SHE'D get her own spin-off so she could get the hell away from all those assholes. And let's not even discuss the never ending saga of Meredith and McDreamy. Specifically, the recent addition of Betty Ong, a San Francisco flight attendant who died in the World Trade Center attacks.

While it doesn't seem like an intentional hit on Ong's heroism, 9/11-ness, or whatever -- because murals in this city get defaced the second the paint starts drying -- it is interesting to note that "the taggers used paint (mixed) with epoxy that we can't...remove." Sherry told the Chronicle, going on to say, "[w]e started fixing it ... but the taggers get angry if you remove their graffiti and they just tried to ruin it."

Because, perhaps appropriately in the "Seven Deadly Sins" challenge episode, Mikey proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he deserved to be there. That Ilan's confidence in the prior 'dinnner party' challenge, where they partnered up, was justified. That, dare we say it, . Friends, that boy can cook.

Seven chefs are left, and many of them seem to hate Marcel. Betty and Ilan in particular heretofore; Sam joins in during this episode. Cliff seems more diplomatic, though the distaste is clear. Mikey is either above it all or too zonked on his painkillers (emergency dental surgery) to participate in the Marcel bashing. Elia, who's happy to still be around after last week, is friendly with Marcel (we're pretty sure they mentioned working together before?), but seems to understand why he might rub the others the wrong way.

As there aren't many contestants left, the Quickfire Challenge no longer provides protection from elimination, much to Mikey's chagrin -- he feels like crap, and wanted to win this, then skip the big challenge altogether as to convalesce. No such luck with this rule change. The challenge: every cheftestant is assigned a color with which to focus a dish around as a theme. Ted from Queer Eye is the guest judge, standing in for Gail. While we don't usually go into such detail for the Quickfire, this was super interesting . . .

We're sick today. We feel like grade-A crapola, and it may color our review of the last episode of just a tad. Not to mention that we're about 10 lbs. heavier than when we watched this episode last Wednesday on Bravo, which is making us even more pissy.

This episode was a 'very special Thanksgiving' episode. And it was pretty special--Tony Bourdain, the well-known chef and world-traveler, was the guest judge, and yes, we love his bad-boy image, his wry personality, and he writes a hell of a good fictional book along with his spectacular non-fiction. Sorry if we're judging this man on his image, folks, along with his writing and cooking pedigree. Oh, P.S. -- he's had some swell adventures recently with our own Mary Ladd/Jalepeno Girl, which you should check out here and here.

Okay, so, in the interest of not exposing more of our jerky sick self to you folks, let's make with the recap/review.

The Quickfire Challenge was a little different this week as Chef Tom (Colicchio) served as the judge (usually it's a guest; Mr. Bourdain didn't show up until the elimination challenge). The chef-testants had to make something out of canned goods. There were a bunch-o-winners: Sam, Cliff, Ilan, Frank, and Mia were not only given immunity from the big challenge this week, they didn't even have to participate. No, only Mike, Carlos, Elia, Marcel, and Betty were subject to the Elimination Challenge: each was to produce a cutting edge course for an updated version of the Thanksgiving meal.
Top Chef

Top Chef: No Clever Headline Needed When Michelle Bernstein Is Involved

Hey, folks -- what better to whet your appetite for the most food-laden of holidays than an episode of Top Chef, tonight on Bravo. Well, as some even predicted, this week made up for that (at least in terms of numbers) by sending two of the chef-testants home. Obvious foreshadowing by the show's editors: Josie telling the camera's that she and Marisa are the only ones that trust each other. Hmph.

But we're jumping the gun.

Best thing about this episode was the guest judge, Michelle Bernstein. We luuurve her. Never tried her cooking, but we saw her on Iron Chef: America once, and she has such a nice smile, good attitude, and cute personality. We know we've said this about many of the women on this show (Gail, Elia, etc), but this time we really mean it: .

And she seemed reasonably straightforward and on-target with her judgments of the Quickfire (immunity) Challenge, wherein the contestants had to take what are (to the American mind) the "leftover" parts of animals and turn them into something good.

During the cooking process, Betty says something about how Marcel looks like a vampire. Duh, Betty; he looks like an anime character, not Dracula.

In any case, Marisa gets the first compliment we recall for her beef cheek pasta. Josie is dinged, as is Elia for evidently neglecting to clean the kidneys she used in her dish. Elia's P.O.'d. Sam, Cliff, and Ilan are cited as being the best three by Chef Bernstein; Sam is the winner with some sort of sweetbread beignets with a Chinese 5-spice/soy.

The Elimination Challenge is to cook a many-course meal for a party being thrown by actress Jennifer Coolidge. While we'd love to bag on Michael for proclaiming her to be "Stiffler's mom," we must admit we couldn't place her until he said that. Of course, one of our favorite lines in any movie is hers in "A Mighty Wind" about the trains ("If they didn't have the model trains, they wouldn't have gotten the idea for the big trains" . . . it's funnier when she delivers it).

Favorite project EVER on craftster:
This is always an excruciating question for me. It's harder than coming up with my favorite song or favorite food. There are just so many awesome projects and they are awesome for so many different reasons. Every month I come up with a dozen "new featured projects" which are determined by member votes and whatever catches my eye. Of the recent featured projects I've picked, my favorite is this lamp made by a member named "Fidget." She used an old 8-track cassette player -- home stereo type not car type -- as the base of the lamp and then stacked up colorful 8-track cassettes on top as the neck of the lamp. She topped it off with an appropriately tacky lampshade. Besides the clever reuse of these 1970s relics, the best thing about this project is that you can still
play cassettes in it!

What kind of things do you make the most?
I tend to be inspired by taking eye-catching old things and remaking them into new things so they can live on in some new form. So for example, I collect these 1960s Betty Crocker recipe cards with gorgeous super-saturated photos of things like bacon-wrapped-hotdog casseroles and I make greeting cards and notebooks out of them. I also love anything plastic-y and kitschy. So I collect weird old plastic charms and cake toppers and make things like jewelry and fridge magnets out of them.

What kinds of techniques/projects/ideas have impressed you the most over the years?
Generally speaking, I love modern-day Japanese fashion and style -- everything from Hello Kitty to Fruits-style fashion. To me, looking at modern Japanese craft books is like being a kid in a candy store. There's this new type of crochet that a lot of people are doing called here and in Japan called "Amigurami" which basically is the most adorable stuffed crocheted animals with rolly-polly spherical shapes.

Another thing I'm impressed and surprised by is how many people are getting back to the foundations of crafting. For example taking raw wool and dying and spinning their own yarn.

What is your favorite thing about craftster?
I love when I meet people or get emails from people and they tell me how much Craftster has inspired them to be more creative or even to get in touch with their creative side in the first place.

What is the most quintessentially San Francisco project to come across craftster?
This is a tricky question. I'm sure there's something "quintessentially San Francisco" on Craftster somewhere. There are so many hundreds of things posted every day that it's impossible to keep up with it all. But there is one
project that jumped to mind. Every month I hold a "Craft Challenge" where there's a theme given and people have a month to make a project. Then they post it and everyone votes for a winner. The range of things that people come up with is amazing. One month the theme was "DIY Twin" where you could use whatever craft technique you want to make a likeness of yourself. A member named "stevenjames" made one of those doll cakes where the dome-shaped cake is the skirt and there's a plastic doll sticking out of the top. The twist was that it was a "drag" doll cake using a hunky GI Joe as the doll. Here was his explanation:

"So a few years ago some friends and I decided to do drag for Halloween - I know, a safe time to dress up like a woman and no one bats an eye - plus it's mandatory if you live in San Francisco."

Whatever his reasoning for this project, I'm just glad I was able to witness the beauty of a "drag" doll cake!

Everybody should by your new book because:
...because if it does well I get to write more and more and more books! Just kidding. But not really.

I'm really happy with the book. The projects themselves are from vintage craft books or are vintage-inspired. They range from hysterically tacky to cleverly eco-friendly to just plain cool. You'll get as much a kick out of looking at it as you will making the projects. The graphic designer did a stunning job, it's full color, and the photographs are big and detailed. These are things that I love in a craft book and I'm so happy I was able to find a publisher who understood this.
