City officials say that a couple of the pernicious beasts were spotted on some chairs at the PAPL's Mitchell Park branch Wednesday, KPIX reports. As a precaution, that branch has been shuttered until at least Sunday, they say, while a pest control company comes in to deal with the critters.

The library has also deployed bedbug-sniffing dogs (which may or may not be effective) to other branches to make sure they aren't infested, as well.

Palo Alto city spokesperson Claudia Keith told ABC7 that library bedbug situations are pretty common, since "their books are circulated throughout a wide region. "

"There might be different ways that any kind of bed bugs may have come into the library. All of our other branches are open and so we'll be having dogs go in after we get Mitchell Park Library open to go in and sniff for bed bugs," Keith said.

Library patrons like Suzi Jackson, who spoke with KTVU, are far less sanguine, saying that when she heard the news, "My husband looked through all the books, then stacked everything up and then I brought them back here just in case."

"My scalp has been itchy all day thinking about it," she said, seemingly unaware that even if her books are bedbug free, she might still have scalp-itch-causing lice.

As anyone who watched the excellent show Difficult People knows bedbugs have been known to infest books, not just library ones. Here's a handy guide on how to spot book bed bugs, or like Billy and Julie, you can just go burn all your books in a barrel right now, just in case.

As the Examiner reports, the greatest concentration of bedbugs seems to be in the Tenderloin, with its clusters of cracky SROs and such. But Uptown Almanac posted this alarming photo of a not-so-quarantined mattress lying out on the streets of the Mission last week, so other neighborhoods are clearly not immune.

Reported cases have risen 44 percent in each of the last few years, with 373 reported in 2007, 537 in 2009, and 500 already reported this year -- SFist first reported on bedbugs here in 2005. The epidemic has been on the rise in other cities like New York and Chicago, and as a bedbug expert instructed on the Rachael Ray Show last year, you ought to carefully check your luggage and clothes after traveling to make sure you aren't bringing the critters with you. Also of note, and a whole a new argument for sticking to Netflix and TiVo: Beware of bedbugs in movie theater seats! The paranoid are advised to check the crevices and seams of movie theater seats before sitting down, while the lights are still up, to see if you see anything crawling up in there.

Bed Bug Allegations

Via Mission Mission, a <a href="http://www.yelp.com/topic/san-francisco-bedbugs---mission-residents---r...

misc

bedbugs

furniture

infestations

yelp

Leanne Maxwell

Via Mission Mission, a Yelper took it upon herself to warn fellow customers of a local bookstore that she had allegedly gotten bed bug bites while sitting and reading Twilight in one of their comfy armchairs. [Update: We have no evidence she was reading Twilight -- we were just subtly riffing off of Mission Mission's sarcasm -- SFist.]

We have to agree with a couple of the respondents of these allegations: How does this person know for sure if they were actual bed bug bites and if that's where they picked up the bed bugs? Bites often don't show up for days afterwards (or sometimes minutes/hours) and are often confused with flea or mosquito bites. And, is it fair to sully this establishment's name?

Regardless, it's always good to be aware that bed bugs lurk all over the place.

Having experienced bed bug woes ourselves, we are sure to pay attention to where we lay our heads and bodies everywhere we go now. Luckily for us, our bed bug infestation went away without too much effort or stress on our part. Our landlord had the place sprayed a couple of times, which we hear doesn't usually work, but it did for us. Hooray! (And yes, we were able to catch a couple of bed bugs to confirm that's what we had.)

Don't Let the _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Bite

We are <a href=...

misc

bedbugs

Creative Commons

hotels

pestcontrol

sanfrancisco

tenderloin

Leanne Maxwell

We are super creeped out right now. We've had a few mysterious, little bites appear on our wrists that itched like a bitch the first day and have stuck around for two or three weeks. They have consistently snuck up on us, occurring about a week apart and causing our night terrors to go medieval a few times, until we finally got ahold of ourselves somewhat, thankyouverymuch.

We hate to say their name because we said it hundreds of times as a child. Was that old, creepy-in-retrospect childhood rhyme some sort of siren song to these tenacious world travelers? It's like, "Sleep tight, don't let those tiny, practically extinct anachronisms bite! We don't really know what they are, but ha ha, don't let them bite!" And now look what we've done.

They're back with a vengeance. (Thanks in part to the banning of toxic pesticides.)

We're not sure we have them ourselves, but it seems pretty easy to get them now, especially when staying in hotels (and not being a very good housekeeper). They can tiptoe into your clothes/suitcase, and you unknowingly stow them away and transport them to yet another exotic location. (Maybe a delectable combination of Type O and AB, for example.) They can also be passed around via used furniture and clothing and can travel between multi-unit apartments.

(Neighbors claim otherwise.) Angel signed a "Good Neighbor" agreement, but community activist Jerry Jarvis tells us that he hasn't lived up to it. The Guardian jumps into the fray by posting messages of support for the club; but Beyond Chron's Paul Hogarth points out that the Guardian might be motivated by the advertising bucks. A difficult and expensive bug to get rid of permanently, Beyond Chron reports that the problem seems to have started in local hostels. The Bay Guardian points out that no public agencies have stepped in to address the issue citywide, though they obtained a letter from the DPH that assured Chris Daly that they are "planning a bedbug eradication workshop in SRO Hotels in spring 2006."
