Giants pitcher Barry Zito laughs at a magician's tricks during the team's holiday party for homeless children at AT&T Park.

It seemed like such a great idea prior to last season – take the best free agent leftie out there, and sign him to the biggest contract ever for a pitcher ("TWO Barrys! What could possibly go wrong?").

And you thought Charmed was just a TV show! You could be forgiven for thinking you'd stepped into an alternate universe where sexy-witchies Piper, Phoebe, and Paige actually still lived in San Francisco with all the Alyssa Milano sightings around town this week. (We all still mourn the untimely death of sister Prue (Shannen Doherty), of course.)

>This post may be a day late, but it's definately not a dollar short as A's contributor Christy takes a look at the A's catchers and Designated Hitters. Coming next, outfield and pitchers.

Here's todays sports news of the day

We've given up our dislike of this whole interleague baseball thing years ago when we realized that things like the Yankees coming to town for a series against the Gints is a pretty cool thing. The same with a set in Fenway also coming this summer. As for the yearly Melee by the Bay, we've sort of acquired a feeling of meh towards the whole thing. It's done every year so there's really not that much of a difference between this series and, say, a Giants/Phillies series or an A's/Indians series.

Sharks 3 Predators 1- San Jose took an all important 2-1 lead in the series against the Predators with an offensive onslaught, getting off 41 shots while holding the Predators to only 19 shots. The Sharks actually were down 1-0 going into the second period when they got goals from Milan Michalek and Ryane Clowe. Patrick Marleau added the insurance goal with about 4 minutes left to play. Also of note is that while the previous games were full of nasty hits and nasty accusations, this game was a little less chippy .

Here's the thing about Opening Day-- it's like Christmas Day for baseball fans. You wake up and get to unwrap the shiny new pitcher, shiny new manager, and shiny new lineup. And this Opening Day? It was like getting socks. Ugly, too short, socks that you would never wear in a million years. That’s the kind of feeling a 7-0 shutout loss will do to you.

-We'll say this about the Warriors-- they got some gumption. After a series of not so great games and the shellacking at the hands of the Spurs, the Warriors went out and beat the mighty Suns. They started off scoring 45 points in the first quarter and then held onto win 124-119. J-Rich scored 36 points, 24 of them on 8 three- point plays. Stephen Jackson had 29 points and Brittle Baron had 21. They are now only a game behind the Clips for the last and final playoff spot.

Okay, since the Alex Rodriguez stories are all over the place, let's take a deeper look at them-- because ruminating on completely unsubstantiated speculation is fun.

20070308__webcalbkc~3.JPG.jpg-Cal took down #4 ranked UCLA in their quarterfinal match of the Pac 10 tournament. They had a big lead at halftime and blew the big lead but managed to hold on to force overtime. It sounds like a great game, actually, as UCLA fought their way back and then the teams traded leads up until the end. They now go to the quarterfinals and play #16 ranked Oregon. At 16-16, Cal has no way of making the Tourney unless they win the Pac 10 Tournament which seemed impossible before, but...

The Warriors' forward/Vice President Of Basketball Operations Chris Mullin is among the finalists for the NBA Hall Of Fame this year. Savor it, Warrior fans...

-It's official, Barry B. is now a Giant as he finally signed a contract. As for Barry's place in baseball, Monte Poole says baseball can go suck it.

Who's that being spotted Hollywood clubbin' with Giants' curveballer Barry Zito?

"He swings like a girl, and runs like a woman," A's ace Danny Haren on Barry Zito's hitting, at FanFest 2007.

On the other side of the Bay, one distraught A's fan posted a Zito tribute on YouTube to the tune of James Blunt's "Goodbye My Lover": Athletics Nation is taking a more masculine approach to its grieving, saying that Barry wasn't that good, anyway. Certainly not the best the A's have ever had. They're even giving away free tickets to FanFest, as they now have previous engagements.
