At around 3 o'clock or so on Sunday, Palo Alto gave a huge sigh of relief as the Cardinal made it into the Big Dance, being seeded 11th in the South Regional. Their first game is against the sixth seed, Louisville (23-9). No time has been set, but the game will be on Wednesday. ...

-Stanford beating ASU has them thinking Big Dance. After a loss to Arizona, Cal is thinking NIT. -In a surprise to nobody, the 49ers released Antonio Bryant. They're supposedly all set to go after some free agent DEs, something to which Monte Poole says beware. -Barry Z and Russ Ortiz are sharp in the Giants first spring training game. Which means, yes, that somewhere on God's green earth, baseball is finally being played. -Tim Kawakami......

-Let's get the Barry news (that being Barry B.) out of the way first. Essentially, George Mitchell, the guy supposed to look into the whole steroid thing, told everyone he wants Barry to cooperate. Barry told him to go suck an egg. Well, not really, but he basically said that he can't while he's still under investigation for perjury. You know, we think if there's any good thing to come out of being under investigation, it's that you don't have to answer anything. Did you accidentally delete "Grey's Anatomy" off of TiVo? Can't comment on that because it might interfere with the investigation. Did you steal my turkey on swiss from the office fridge? Can't comment on that due to the pending investigation. See what we mean? ...

-Barry Z meets the press while Barry B is still unsigned. Scott Ostler is looking forward to the Z and B show and actually, he has a point-- the Giants are now lead by two people who are about as different as different could be. Over in Oakland, Monte Pool says flaky Barry Z could be a perfect fit for flaky SF ...

Okay, so the Giants did go out and sign Barry Zito, something we were kind of rooting for. So are we happy? Hmmm...we think the best words to describe it would be "ambivalent" and "not quite sure." We are hard to please....

Everyone loves a redemption story and the A's this year might have baseball's best redemption story as Frank Thomas put the Big Hurt on the Twins, leading the A's to a 3-2 victory. He started things off with a home run in the 1st and then added a crucial insurance run in the top of the ninth to give the A's a one run lead. That became crucial when the Twins lead off the bottom of the ninth with a triple that Milton Bradley lost in the Metrodome ceiling (everyone who plays there has done it-- it's one of the reasons playing in the Metrodome just flat-out sucks for visiting teams). ...
