Hey, remember that Grand Jury that was out there looking into the whole BALCO mess? And remember how supposedly the Grand Jury dropped that issue and instead started investigating Barry B? Well, according to the New York Daily News, the Grand Jury got themselves six more months to look at the case against Barry and that supposedly they have a pretty good case against him. The source in the story say that the Grand Jury has enough to go after Barry but wants at least six more months to make the case go from pretty strong to dead-to-rights strong. They are also afraid of making it look too political in handing down the indictment right around the time Barry is on the verge of breaking the big record.

You know, if last fall wasn't exactly a great time for Bay Area sports, this spring, especially this weekend, has to be considered a great moment. We listened to Gary Radnich this morning and he was complaining about not having anything to complain about.

Here's todays rounup of sports news.

At around 3 o'clock or so on Sunday, Palo Alto gave a huge sigh of relief as the Cardinal made it into the Big Dance, being seeded 11th in the South Regional. Their first game is against the sixth seed, Louisville (23-9). No time has been set, but the game will be on Wednesday.

-Let's get the Barry news (that being Barry B.) out of the way first. Essentially, George Mitchell, the guy supposed to look into the whole steroid thing, told everyone he wants Barry to cooperate. Barry told him to go suck an egg. Well, not really, but he basically said that he can't while he's still under investigation for perjury. You know, we think if there's any good thing to come out of being under investigation, it's that you don't have to answer anything. Did you accidentally delete "Grey's Anatomy" off of TiVo? Can't comment on that because it might interfere with the investigation. Did you steal my turkey on swiss from the office fridge? Can't comment on that due to the pending investigation. See what we mean?

-Barry B arrives in camp and does his annual State of The Barry speech, always an entertaining occasion. This time, however, he didn't drag his son into it or spend the entire time attacking the press, but instead, dared everyone to investigate him. Ray Ratto yawns.

-For the Niners, the big question is what to do now that Norv is gone. First up, who to replace him with? Ray Ratto thinks WR coach Jerry Sullivan would be the best choice.

-It's official, Barry B. is now a Giant as he finally signed a contract. As for Barry's place in baseball, Monte Poole says baseball can go suck it.

-The Warriors get a big lead, lose a big lead, then regain a big lead as they beat the NY Knicks. Tim Kawakami thinks the Warriors need to tank the season by giving Patrick O’Bryant some playing time.

The paper of record, the New York Times, actually has the latest news on the signing of Barry B. Mainly that it still hasn't happened yet and just might not happen. In light of the amphetamines story, the Giants are beginning to rethink signing him.

-The Warriors beat the SuperSonics at the Oracle, 108-104 as the Warriors fended off a rampaging Ray Allen. Don Nelson really likes Kelenna Azubuike.

-Barry Z meets the press while Barry B is still unsigned. Scott Ostler is looking forward to the Z and B show and actually, he has a point-- the Giants are now lead by two people who are about as different as different could be. Over in Oakland, Monte Pool says flaky Barry Z could be a perfect fit for flaky SF

-In light of the end of the NFL season, the 49ers look forward to next year while the Raiders look inward. Shell thinks he's coming back but Warren Sapp isn't.

Alright, let's take a look at this Zito signing after we've all had a day to absorb everything. First, more details of the deal has been released. The key thing is that Zito will make only $10 million this year as he agreed to backload some of his salary to help the Giants and their budget. Which is another way of saying "have money left over for the other Barry." The signing should come soon. The Giants budget this year will be $92 million, their highest yet and about $12 million more than their standard $80 million. This all sounds well and good-- we like teams that spend to win, but one wonders what would have happened if they decided to break the bank earlier. Like, oh, resigning Jeff Kent. Or going after Vlade. Or another good starter to back up Jason Schmidt.

Okay, so the Giants did go out and sign Barry Zito, something we were kind of rooting for. So are we happy? Hmmm...we think the best words to describe it would be "ambivalent" and "not quite sure." We are hard to please.
