Friends of SFist, Charlie Anders (Writers with Drinks) and Annalee Newitz (whose Techsploitation column we read each week with the Weeklies) have a new anthology out called Tonight, contributors will be reading at City Lights (261 Columbus Ave. at Broadway). The book is a collection of first-person stories by women working in tech, science, game design, and other male-dominated "geeky" fields like tech law and even comic book writing. And of course the book has its own blog! (7pm)
We've been waiting for this for years, okay, weeks, since we first took a gander at Berkeley's PFA calendar, is a collection of remakes of that touchstone of the Gen-X grade school experience. Curators Thomas Beard and Nick Hallett enlisted a bevy of contemporary artists and filmmakers, including former SF performance artist, Nao Bustamante, to rework or restage the original's all-too-memorable segments including "William Wants a Doll" and the skit with Michael Jackson still secure in his blackness. This just in! Bunim/Murray will be in Berkeley tomorrow casting for the 18th season of "The Real World." According to the press release, they'll be looking for "characters from real life; people with strong personalities who are unafraid to speak their minds." Also wanted: people who can't hold their liquor, people who have never been around "homosexuals," and homosexuals who can't hold their liquor.
