Straight Pride, a.k.a SF's Oldest Footrace">
It's Bay to Breakers again this weekend, and it's the first Bay to Breakers in three years thanks to a stupid plague that hasn't quite left us. But now that nearly everyone has had COVID, it's time to don some silly costumes and drink your way across the city with your friends at 8 a.m. on a Sunday.

First, a little history. Bay to Breakers dates back to 1912, six years after the devastating Great Earthquake and fire that destroyed much of San Francisco in April 1906. Much as the 1915 Pan Pacific International Exposition was cast as the city's grand re-birth party, the 7.5-mile footrace initially called the Cross City Race was meant as a precursor athletic event to the exposition and a way to lift the city's spirits as it continued to rebuild and began to thrive again. The first first-place finisher of the race was Robert Jackson "Bobby" Vlught, a student at St. Mary’s College in Moraga.

It was not always a full-on, costumed boozefest. The race was launched as an actual athletic competition, with 186 starters and 121 finishers, and to this day it does still attract actual, world-class runners who are actually trying to win. (For the last 30 years it's mostly been Kenyans winning the men's division, though 2019's winner was Gabriel Geay of Tanzania, who crossed the city in 35 minutes and one second.) It's hard to say when, exactly, the race took on its kookier qualities, and a reputation for being more of a frat party walk-a-thon and excuse for very early day-drinking than a race. But the 1970s are a good timeframe to pin it on, and we know that 1978 is when UC Davis runner Douglas L. Peck helped establish the "centipede" division of the race, specifically for groups of 13 to 15 runners attached by bungee-cord or other cord, running in tandem. (According to the official rules, "The final segment of each centipede must wear a stinger of appropriate design and toxicity.") And 1986 was the year that the race set a Guinness Book record for its size: 110,000 participants.

Costumes have been a major thing at the race for at least 40 years. "San Francisco, a city which revels in its eccentricities and its ability to laugh at itself, was an appropriate host for this hugging Carnivale on feet," wrote the Christian Science Monitor, covering the 1985 running of Bay to Breakers. That year, the 74th running, had an "estimated 85,000 official and unofficial entrants," and featured "a flock of flamingoes; two huge green tennis shoes; and dozens of wandering silicon chips," as well as an estimated 40 pairs of runners dressed as The Blues Brothers. (Much like Halloween, Bay to Breakers has always been a moment to glimpse the cultural zeitgeist — case in point, there were many Elizabeth Holmeses running/walking the 2019 race.)

Photo: Joe Kukura/SFist

There's a tortilla toss at the starting gate. Perhaps someone even older than me has a bead on how the tradition started, but suffice it to say, people bring tortillas to throw at each other at the starting gate, where runners gather at the Embarcadero around 7 a.m.

There's typically plenty of nudity. Up until former SF Supervisor turned State Senator Scott Wiener rained on the nudity parade with his 2012 nudity-banning ordinance, San Francisco was known as a place where people could get naked in public with no fear of judgment or prosecution. We still have our nudists of course, primarily in and around the Castro — the ordinance simply says they have to make a gesture of modesty with a flap over their junk, and put down a towel if they sit anywhere. And they come out for Bay to Breakers, especially if the weather is nice, and occasionally hot people take their clothes off too. Noted local nudist activist turned convicted teen-stalker Gypsy Taub tested the limits of the nudity ban at B2B 2014, and got a citation — even though the law specifically makes exceptions for Bay to Breakers and Folsom Street Fair.

<img src="https://img.sfist.com/2022/05/GettyImages-87447751.jpg" class="kg-image" alt="A Brief History and Fun Facts About Bay to Breakers, a.k.a. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

SFist played a role in Bay to Breakers becoming even boozier. SFist's own Joe Kukura began publishing a Bay to Breakers Liquor Locator Store map — a handy guide to the closest corner stores and beer purveyors to the race route — on this website in 2008. (The latest will be arriving on Thursday, May 12, so racers can plan ahead.) And that year, Chronicle columnists Matier & Ross called us out as contributing to the increasing mayhem of the race.

There used to be floats, back before the fun police stepped in. By the time SFist started covering Bay to Breakers in the early aughts, the race had morphed fully into the shitfaced bro-fest we know today, only it was more chaotic in terms of the drinking. A tradition arose wherein people brought floats along for the race, and these floats (one year there was a full Tiki bar) frequently became ersatz keg cozies, allowing people to basically put kegs on wheels and drink a whole lot of beer until they hit Hayes Hill and decided to abandon the keg or just park it in Alamo Square Park and drink. Floats were outlawed at the race starting with the 100th running in 2011, as was drinking (technically), after ING dropped out as a sponsor following the chaotic 2010 race. Organizers further made a gesture toward respectability by saying they were cracking down that year on unregistered runners entering the race after the starting gate. But given that you can't exactly police all seven miles of the course, this is hard to enforce, and people still do this.

There is typically rampant public urination. Organizers have tried over the years to make sure there were adequate porta-potty stops on the course. Madrone Art Bar on Divisadero once even welcomed racers to come in and use their toilets. But the urination in doorways, in bushes in the Panhandle, and on the sides of buildings, still tends to occur, especially around the middle of the course after people have been going at it for a couple hours. (Former KRON4 guy Stanley Roberts, who's lately back in the Bay Area, used to do a regular segment called "People Behaving Badly" which would always cover Bay to Breakers shenanigans, including the peeing.) Maybe the younger generation running this race in 2022 is more put together and polite than their forebears? Maybe not!

Historically, the race has also been known for tragedy and occasional crimes. Remember the 2012 Bay to Breakers murder case? 31-year-old Steven Martin, who came with friends to the race dressed as shirtless Troll dolls with colored wigs, was attacked by a group of men in Niners jerseys after finishing the race near Ocean Beach. He ended up in a coma and then was taken off life support, and as far as we know the case has remained unsolved. Also in 2012, a 21-year-old man who was tripping on acid allegedly ripped some hair off a woman's head and spat at a police officer. In 2013, a man attending a rooftop Bay to Breakers party along Fell Street fell off the roof to his death. And also in 2013, a 27-year-old man, Beau Rasmussen, disappeared shortly after completing the race and his body was never found. (His wallet and cellphone were found on the beach, and his family believes he jumped in the ocean as part of a post-race tradition and drowned.)

Some people dress as salmon and run the race "upstream." If you so choose, you can be a weirdo, get a salmon costume, and start your race at the ocean, and run it the other direction.

Zappos, the current lead sponsor, has been a good sport. Yes, young Millennials and Gen Zers don't seem to like to drink as much as the rest of San Francisco traditionally has, so maybe that has contributed to the race being a bit more tame the last couple of times it was run? But now that we're in the Roaring 20s 2.0, that could change! According to the race website copy, "Each year the race is a glorious celebration of the human spirit – a giant wave of athleticism, fun, frivolity, and determination flowing across the City from the Bay to the Pacific Ocean." That and a lot of beer-induced peeing!

If you are running/walking the race, or just spectating/jumping in for a mile or so, be safe out there!! And wear sunscreen. (Though it's going to be partly cloudy Sunday and the high is forecast to be 63 degrees.)

You can still register for Bay to Breakers, and it will cost you $80.

Top photo: Joe Kukura

The Sober, The Drunk, And The Blacked Out: Scenes From Bay to Breakers 2017

Whether you registered and ran the whole thing, or just ducked in for a few blocks around Hayes Hill and joined the party in the Panhandle, or if you just woke up to take a few photos of this year's c...

Arts & Entertainment

b2b

bay to breakers

Jay Barmann

Whether you registered and ran the whole thing, or just ducked in for a few blocks around Hayes Hill and joined the party in the Panhandle, or if you just woke up to take a few photos of this year's costumes from the sidelines, you likely saw some part of the annual Bay to Breakers footrace or its aftermath on Sunday. Racers, and bands of costumed revelers who didn't really bother with the "race," could be found fanning out across the city by noon, and this year's costumes, as evidenced in this gallery, included some of the usual cultural zeitgeist stuff like Sean Spicer and some bushes, and the Hotdog/Not Hotdog app from Silicon Valley.

This was the 106th running of this beloved race, and as for the actual racers, as CBS 5 reports, Philemon Cheboi won the race with a time of 34 minutes, 48 seconds, also winning the male division, and Buze Diriba won the female division with a time of 39:48. Both of them are 23 years old, with Cheboi from Kenya and Diriba from Ethiopia.

As the Chronicle tells us, the city provided 1,000 porta-potties this year to try to prevent public urination, and, of course, despite the official ban on booze, there were plenty of people carrying it and drinking it on the race route.

And, as always, there was plenty of nudity too, which was aided by a warm and sunny day.

Check out these photos, and if you can't get enough, the Chronicle has about 100 more here.

As is our custom in the days leading up to the annual Bay to Breakers footrace, bacchanal, and sh*tshow, SFist again presents a fully updated Bay to Breakers Liquor Store Map to help you locate more booze, cigarettes, and whatever other various sundries you may need when stuck in the remote regions of the race like Golden Gate Park.

For the first year ever, this interactive Google Map is now equipped with the “little blue dot” functionality on both iOS and Android smartphones to show where you are in relation to the closest liquor store! You also see a blue line showing the race course itself, and red bottles representing the exact locations of the liquor stores open during race hours. This map can be accessed on your smartphone during the race by visiting bit.ly/b2bliquor or via more detailed download instructions at the bottom of this article.

There is only one major change to this year’s map, but it’s a big one. Bi-Rite Market on Divisadero will shutter its doors until 1 p.m. this Sunday, so their craft microbrews and fancy wine varietals will not be available to you drunken, Bay-to-Breakering fools. This is a shocker, considering how this Bi-Rite had so magnificently catered to drunken Bay to Breakers foolery in recent years (even selling cups and bottle openers to facilitate open container consumption). The morning closure of this Bi-Rite leaves the freshly repainted New Star-Ell Liquor across the street as the very last liquor store you will encounter directly on the race course — even though you are not yet even halfway through the race!

Beyond that is where this map comes in handy. The pastoral but remote nether regions of Golden Gate Park pose an enormous challenge to those “runners” whose main running involves “running out of alcohol”. There are no liquor stores along the park-adjacent Fulton Street and Lincoln Way, and liquor stores are difficult as heck to find if you’re not familiar with the Richmond and Sunset neighborhoods. If accessing the map on your smartphone, your whereabouts will be shown as a location-sensitive blue dot to help you determine the most logical and easy spots to hop off the race course, procure more booze, and return to the revelry of your inebriated slouch to the Finish Line.

You can access the map on your smartphone during Sunday’s festivities if you can just remember the URL bit.ly/b2bliquor. If you’d rather bookmark it ahead of time in anticipation of being too hammered to properly type, here are instructions to bookmark the URL on an iPhone or to bookmark the URL on Android. (This being a Google Map, iPhone users may need to sign in to your Google account — or for that matter even have a Google account). Google Maps is pretty good about showing locations of Golden Gate Park's little paths out to the avenues, and the liquor stores’ addresses and names will display in a legend if you click on the red bottle icons.

In an annual tradition just as beloved here at SFist as the posting of Bay to Breakers costumed revelry, we now bring you KRON4's Stanley Robert's requisite "People Behaving Badly" segment all about B2B runners urinating publicly wherever they please. In a twist this year, he caught several people urinating on or next to actual porta-potties, either because the lines were too long or because they didn't want to smell the inside.

In one case, a group dressed as Kim Jong Un and some of his North Korean guards went ahead and pissed next to some porta-potties right in front of Stanley, with one of the guys flipping Stanley off the entire time. So that's fun. (Also, this year, it looks like Stanley put up a rough cut above, before doing a final cut, which you can view below, in which he closes with shaming one of the booze-patrol people who was confiscating unopened containers of booze.)

Also, as SFist's Joe Kukura points out with the photo below, the SFPD put out large signs this year that said NO PUBLIC URINATION, in case people didn't get the message.

Here's Stanley's final cut, or Part 2, of this Bay to Breakers edition of "People Behaving Badly."

It was a little cold out there, but nevertheless Sunday marked the 104th running of Bay to Breakers, which has been called the oldest consecutively run footrace in the world, starting as a San Francisco tradition in 1912. By most accounts, things were slightly tamer, less naked, and more under control than in some previous years, likely thanks to the less than May-like temperatures and the increased vigilance of the SFPD in corralling stray partiers during the race wind-down after noon. A total of 11 people were arrested, as KRON4 reports, five on suspicion of felonies, three on suspicion of misdemeanors, and three on suspicion of being drunk in public. But despite setting up "sobering centers" with a capacity of 80 people, only 10 people sought time apart in these centers to lie down and hope the spinning stopped.

And in case you missed it, there were these kids who dressed up as the Serial podcast, which may or may not be kind of insensitive, given that it's not fiction.

Oh, yeah! This was an actual race with winners and stuff. The men's race champ was Isaac Mukandi Mwangi of Kenya, with a time of 35:25, as KTVU reports. The women's winner was Jane Kibii, who's also from Kenya by way of Sacramento, and she finished at 40:04.

But, as usual, most everyone was there for the spectacle and party of it all. Without further ado, the documentation of this year's boozy mess.

SFist's Bay to Breakers Liquor Store Map For 2015

A cherished SFist tradition returns to help you find more booze when you 'run out' in Golden Gate Park.

Arts & Entertainment

alcohol

b2b

bay to breakers

booze

liquor store

liquor store map

liquor stores

people behaving badly

Joe Kukura

A cherished SFist tradition returns, as we present the new, updated and fully annotated Bay to Breakers Liquor Store Map for 2015. The map details the locations of all the corner liquor stores on this Sunday’s Bay to Breakers race course.

Bay to Breakers “runners” know that once you hit the race’s halfway point (New Star-Ell Liquor at Divisadero and Fell), there are no more liquor stores located directly on the second half of the race course. With the help of this Google Map magic, you’ll be able to locate the nearest available liquor store when you’re desperate for more booze and smokes in the far-flung backwoods of Golden Gate Park.

The little cocktail icons on the above map show the locations of each of the nearest liquor stores to the Bay to Breakers race course. The quickest and easiest “get-off points” in The Panhandle and Golden Gate Park are shown as red lines, with directional information displayed when you click on these lines. Your best get-off points are at Masonic St. in the Panhandle, the little paths at the de Young Museum, Crossover Drive, 30th Ave., Spreckels Lake, and the little paths along MLK Drive (at which point you are in the final stretch and you really should just finish the race).

There are no significant changes to this year’s Liquor Store Map landscape, but a few liquor stores are rebranded of have different names. The former Lucky Supermarket in NoPa is now the Fulton Market, and former Deli Plus (Hayes and Ashbury) is now called Central Park Liquors.

Down in the Sunset, your former Golden Gate Market (6th Ave. and Judah) is now the much more posh Golden Bear Trading Co, and the former Royal Food Store (9th Ave. and Judah) is now called JT Market. All of these liquor stores are nicer in their new incarnations!

You can access this Google Map on your mobile device just by bookmarking this page, or you can text or email yourself this link to pull the map up whilst running the race. It's time once again this Sunday for the Straight Pride Parade/heavily costumed footrace that is Bay to Breakers — and yes, we know, LGBT people are well represented too. Year in and year out it's simultaneously one of San Francisco's finest and most embarrassing hours, and a time for many a 24-year-old to test the limits of his or her alcohol tolerance in the pre-noon hours. Luckily, or unluckily, this year the weather won't be terribly warm, which may discourage the mass drunk lingering that ends up happening around the Panhandle, since the majority of people never make it to the finish line. And once again this year, cops will be out cracking down on public urination, and bad behavior, if not public boozing, since pretty much everyone will be doing that (though alcohol is officially prohibited on the race route). As for nudity, it's anybody's guess. Technically, the 2012 nudity ban explicitly made an exception for B2B, but tell that to the cops who were handing out citations last year.

With that, we bring you SFist's Dos and Don'ts for this year's race. For reference, may we also point you back to 15 Signs You're Too Old For Bay to Breakers, and our Guide to Bay to Breakers, For Various Types Of Stereotypical Racers.

On Sunday, Bay to Breakers swept through San Francisco for the 103rd time. Troubles with an "unsteady arch" at the starting line delayed the first wave of Bay to Breakers runners this morning, but the real crowds never see the starting line anyway.

Kenyan Geoffrey Kenisi won the 12k men's race with a sober time of 35:10 and Diane Johnson of Burundi won the women's 12k with a time of 40:10.

Although SFPD won't be releasing detailed arrest and citation numbers until Monday, but there were plenty of reports of Bay to Breakers-related shenanigans this afternoon. In Golden Gate Park, a naked man reportedly jumped the fence at the bison paddock. In the panhandle, there was a puking watermelon and SFPD officers collaring food vendors:

All told, there were 24 arrests reported, including two for felony narcotics possession and several "quality of life" arrests. There were 40,000 participants total, an estimated 100,000 spectators and, of course, countless citation-free instances of public urination.

Once again it's time to gear up for Bay to Breakers, the annual shitshow/foot race/straight pride parade that everyone loves to prepare costumes for, and no one likes to clean up after. Having experienced a few of these things, we here at SFist have prepared a guide custom-made for several different types of racers who one typically sees participate in this event. One of these may very well pertain to you, so you'd best read on.

Racer Type A:
You actually trained, or something. You haven’t had a sip of alcohol in 48 hours and you rose bright and early at 4 a.m. to start stretching. You properly registered and you are wearing appropriate running attire — i.e. you are fully clothed. You will make it to Ocean Beach and you might even be in the first 200 finishers. No one you know will be up that early to congratulate you except, maybe, a dutiful significant other.
Where to Eat: You just expended a whole lot of calories, so you deserve a nice, carb-rich breakfast! Might we suggest the excellent breakfast sandwich at Devil's Teeth Baking Company? Or perhaps some of the *original* $4 toast at Trouble Coffee Co.
How This Will End For You: You've got a full day ahead, and that seven-mile job was nothing compared to the marathons and half-marathons you do on the regular. Why not go lift a few weights and head to the farmers' market Civic Center for some healthy dinner fixings? To get there quickly, you might want to use Muni's special express shuttle service, which is going to run you $12 but there may literally be no other way to get home unless your S.O. brought his/her Vespa.

Racer Type B:
You and your friends have coordinated your Flappy Bird costumes (or similar), likely led by one organizational force among you, and you started pre-gaming at 6 a.m. Some of you have not slept since Friday. Some of you are showing midriff. This is not your first time at this rodeo, and you totally have a party to duck in to along the route in Hayes Valley.
Where to Eat: Food? You had a protein bar with your gallon of vodka cranberry at 7. You're good.
How This Will End For You: The group totally splinters and some of you land, hopefully face up, in Alamo Square, partying with another set of Flappy Birds and talking about how awesome this is that you both chose these costumes. Another faction makes it as far as the Panhandle, where at least one person pukes, and one girl has ceased being able to walk unassisted. Lyfts will be impossible to find, but somebody manages to get an UberX at 4x surge pricing to ferry home those in the worst shape. The rest of you stumble to the Haight and continue drinking where anyone will allow you to. Probably Martin Macks or The Gold Cane.

Racer Type C:
You're brand new in town and you've only just heard about San Francisco's version of Mardi Gras (or the Kentucky Derby, or whatever the big party at your undergraduate institution was) and you want to get in on the action, but have not actually registered for the race. You'll need to jump in the action somewhere mid-route. Say, around 9 a.m. or so. Once you realize the all-day party you were promised actually ends when DPW starts hosing down the streets at Noon, you won't make it past Stanyan Street.
Where to Eat: Since your half-assed group is going as a couple of cartoon breakfast cereal mascots, you had to empty out a box of Trix before you could use it to hide your beer stash. Replace any confiscated beers with fresh ones from Bi-Rite along with some organic potato chips.
How This Will End For You: When the street sweepers roll in, duck into Madrone for the afterparty.

Racer Type D:
Then you have your festive gay male racer. You join the fray with your gaggle of inebriated friends, almost on time, each carrying thermoses of Mandarin Absolut and soda.
Where to Eat: You must be joking.
How This Will End For You: After the race gets to be too much, you and your brood (sporting identical plunging v-necks or pairs of bikini swim briefs) escape the heterosexual madness and rendezvous at Hi Tops to hunt for dudes and barf in the urinal trough. This may require two cars.

Racer Type E:
You woke up hungover at 9 a.m. to 30 texts from friends you promised to meet up with. You live vaguely near the race route, and make your way tentatively into the daylight.
Where to Eat: Popeye's on Divis is the only thing that makes sense right now. Followed by at least 3 forties, to take the edge off.
How This Will End For You: See below, at about 1 p.m.

Like clockwork, Stanley Roberts has churned out the latest edition in his ongoing chronicle of local people behaving terribly. As Stanley told SFist on the phone late last week, Bay to Breakers is "like my Christmas." Unfortunately for Stanley (our Santa), he had to skip Bay to Breakers 2013 due to complications from that run-in with some hippies in Berkeley, but a team of KRON4 cameramen still went out into the field to see what they could capture. Which begs the question: If there's no Stanley Roberts, are people still behaving badly? Yes. Of course they are.

So where was the worst behavior this year? Not peeing behind a tree in the Panhandle, apparently. But running atop a row of porta-potties out at Ocean Beach in a Buddy the Elf costume:

It seems the very worst behavior was stymied by the extra security snagging bottles and cans on Hayes Street. In other news, some people were actually very well-behaved. Adorable, even.

During yesterday's Bay to Breakers festivities, the friendly neighborhood grocers at Bi-Rite took advantage of their prime location at Divisadero and Hayes by pivoting their business model for the day. In order to better serve the thirsty hordes of revelers, the store - known for its local produce, sustainably raised meats and carefully curated cheese selection - stocked the place with Tecate tallboys, bottled water, and snacks.

Everything was set up to steer partiers, some of whom had just had their drinks confiscated by police up the hill at Alamo Square, to a refreshing cold beverage. The aisles were blocked by refrigerators to keep the drunks from wandering too far astray and accidentally buying a bag of mixed greens. The deli case was papered-over with a sign directing folks to a selection of pre-made sandwiches. The cheese was all gone from the cooler — replaced by even more beer. And there was no line at the ice cream counter because the scoopers were only serving up pre-packaged pints. Signs advertised cups and bottle openers behind the counter, in case anyone forgot their drinking supplies.

The place hardly even resembled Bi-Rite where, just one day earlier, your editor overheard a retired couple discussing the difference between trawled and line-caught tuna fish in a can. But it all makes sense: Bi-Rite prides themselves on carrying only the best of what their customer base needs, and on Sunday those customers only needed beer, water and maybe some truffle popcorn.

Meanwhile, across the street at Popeye's, things at the fried chicken store had descended into utter chaos. Again.

During a Bay to Breakers party at 2040 Fell Street, a man suffered life-threatening injuries after falling from a roof on Sunday afternoon. He fell four stories from the top of the Panhandle-adjacent building.

According to KRON 4 Morning News, the man tumbled while leaning over the roof. (Fell Street runs along the Bay to Breakers route.) The incident happened at around 3:15 p.m. He was rushed to San Francisco General where he later died.

The identity of the victim has yet to be released.

In addition to one fatality, police pinched 21 people for public intoxication, "one for possession of a firearm and one felony arrest for robbery during the race and event. " A reported 16 sots were taken to sobriety centers to recover from the revelry.

Update: The Chron reports that the victim has been identified as 28-year-old David Hamzeh, an employee at the online marketing company DemandForce, according to a company spokesperson. It sounds like many people witnessed his from the sidewalk and from neighboring buildings, and it was pretty gruesome and traumatic. The party was allegedly not very rowdy, but at 3:30 p.m. it's likely Hamzeh had been drinking most of the day.
