Yes, a save, but did he earn it? Winn, btw, was playing leftfield as a defensive replacement for Barry and that brings up the topic du jour, which is whether Barry's noticeably awful defense is becoming more of a negative than his hitting is a positive. In other words, is Barry's D to the point where it's actually better not to play him because he could cost more runs than he could produce? To which the obvious answer is who the hell else is going to hit the ball?

Astros 5 A's 4 - We haven't been watching the NBA Finals that much but from what we've heard, LeBron is playing some other team and LeBron is down 3-0. Apparently, the problem is that despite what everyone keeps telling us, LeBron seems unable to score 120 points a game. Not that we're experts in basketball, but we think it could have something to do with the fact he occasionally passes the ball to people in the same uniform who are not him and they even sometimes shoot it. In fact, sometimes those people in the same uniform actually play on the court when LeBron is on the bench! Apparently, the team he is playing is quite good, but they don't talk that much about them. We think they're from Texas and one of them is about to marry some hottie from a show we never watch, but that's all about all we know.

Us? We think bringing a broom is one step below face painting. But it might have been nice to have brought one because the Giants did sweep the series with the Astros. It's up to you to decide which was the most improbable thing that happened during the game-- a Bonds-less offense scoring nine runs, Barry Zito pitching a good game, Bengie Molina hitting a triple, or Condeleeza Rice actually showing her face in San Francisco. We'll go with Condi showing up. The Giants, by the way, now have a nice little four game winning streak going.

Lowry is 5-4 and has gotten a decision in almost every game he's pitched, a sign that he's pitched deep in every game. That's good. The fact that he's only 5-4 but with an ERA under three shows that he's just gotten some bad luck in his outings. Or more like bad offense. Last night, he got just enough offense to win, mainly courtesy of Big Money Molina who hit a little flair into centerfield with the bases loaded to score two. Props also go out to Ryan Klesko for some neat defensive plays and his first Splash Hit as a Giant.

Giants 2 Astros 1-- Tim, Time, he's our man if he can't do it, no one can...

In a game sure to make Giants fans fall hard, the Enchanter enchanted. For the seven innings he pitched, his fastball was in the high 90s and his changeup danced as he struck out ten batters and gave up only two hits. The only run he gave up was after a walk, a stolen base and error, and a sac fly. On the other side, Roy Oswalt also threw down and had a no hitter going for 5 2/3. The only runs the Giants scored were fluky runs caused by Astros throwing errors.

The big question now is what to do about Russ Ortiz. He's all ready to take his place in the rotation but after this performance, the front office would have the fans in pitchfork mode if Timmmahh back down to the minors. It's like going back to driving your old, used Honda after test driving a Porsche.

Royals 7 A's 4- This game was so inspiring neither the Chronicle nor the Oakland Tribune didn't see fit to really run stories on the game. Which is what happens when you lose three-out-of-four to the worst team in baseball. They didn't even lose by a close margin-- they were pretty much out of it early. The A's are now 20-20 which is pretty amazing considering even the bat boys are on the DL.
This time, the A's were up by a run and lost the game as the Royals scored two runs in the top of the ninth to win. Jack Cust, however, continues to be hotter than the Snorg Girl as he hit another home run in the eighth to give the A's a short lived lead.

Actually, it's amazing the Warriors were even that close as they had trouble shooting threes, Davis was held somewhat in check, and they let their emotions get to them again and racked up a flagrant foul and two technical fouls within minutes of each other.

If you take away all the excitement of the playoff run, it has to be said that all of this is as expected when they hired Nellie. Nellie is known for having his teams play an exciting up-tempo game and getting his team into the playoffs where he's good for an upset or two. But that's about it. When you hire Nelson and get his team to play Nellie Ball you get a team not geared for advancing far in the playoffs. Sooner or later, his team will run into a team like the Jazz-- bigger, better defensively, and coached by somebody who can match Nellie move for move-- and get eliminated. The Warriors got all that when they hired Nelson. But that's pretty much what we can expect to see over the next few years.

Giants 6 Astros 5- Many people will think Armando Benitez lost the game for the Giants when he gave up a two-run home run in the eighth and allowed the 'Stros to tie the game. We, however, think the blame should reside with us as we turned on the game just as Benitez came into pitch, therefore altering the time/space continuum and changing the karmic balance in which the game was being played. We apologize.

A's 5 Royals 4- Like the Giants, the A's had a lead going into late innings only to have their bullpen blow the save and allow the other team to tie the game. Unlike the Giants, however, the A's managed to squeak out the win in extra innings. Games like this could be the norm for Oakland as Huston Street and Justin Duchscherer are the latest to go down with injuries.

Hey, maybe the A's would be interested in Armando Benitez?.
And about yesterday's games: young Jerome Williams was huge for the Giants and young Bobby Crosby was huge for the A's.

So here's how it all works over the weekend, first for the Giants. If they lose any of their three games against the Dodgers, they lose the division. If they have a worse record than the Astros, they lose the Wild Card. There are also some tiebreaker scenarios. If the Giants sweep the Dodgers this weekend, thus ending up in a tie, the two teams come to San Francisco to play a one game playoff for the Division in San Francisco on Monday. If they have the same record over the weekend as Houston, the two teams come to San Francisco to play a one game playoff for the Wilds Card in San Francisco on Monday. If all three teams tie (meaning sweeps for the Giants and Astros), then the Giants play the Dodgers on Monday, here, for the Division and the loser plays the Astros the next day for the Wild Card. (The Giants have the home-field advantage in all the tiebreaker scenarios because they went five-for-five in a series of coin tosses a few weeks ago. They actually have options in the three-way tie described above, but they'd probably opt for that setup.)

For the A's and Angels, things are a lot more straightforward. Whoever wins the series in Oakland this weekend (tickets are still available) wins the division and goes to the playoffs. Whoever loses goes home.

To make matters worse, the Astros won, thereby giving themselves the lead in the NL Wild Card race.

For those of you who don't pull your own teeth, or at least submit yourself to the torture of watching the end of crucial late-season baseball games, we'll give you a rundown of how it feels. It's the bottom of the tenth and the Giants are tied 3-3 with the Padres. It's that time of year when every pitch is the most important one yet in the season and the next one's even bigger. Dustin Hermanson, the Giants' closer, is in there and your hopes are high. Padre catcher Ramon Hernandez, a known Giant-killer, hits a high chopper to third which Edgardo Alfonzo grabs on the run. The throw to first pulls Pedro Feliz off the bag and Hernandez is safe. Score that an error for Alfonzo. Pinch-hitter Kerry Robinson lays down a bunt, looking to sacrifice Hernandez to second. Giant catcher Yorvit Torrealba pounces on it, looks to second, decides to go to first, and throws it in the dirt. Journeyman infielder Brian Dallimore, covering the bag from second, can't scoop the ball and it gets away from him. Score that an error for Torrealba. Both runners advance, putting Padres at second and third with no outs. The Giants opt to walk Padre shortstop Ramon Vazquez to load the bases, giving them force-outs everywhere. Center-fielder and leadoff man Jay Payton grounds to second. Dallimore goes home, getting the out there, but pulling Torrealba off the plate, thereby keeping him from making an accurate throw to first and getting the second out of the inning. So here comes Mark Lorretta, hitting .340, third in the National League. Hermanson's got him to a 1-1 count and he hits a high popup to right. Dustan Mohr races over toward the foul line, hot to make the catch and get a throw home to try to nail Robinson who'll surely be tagging up at third. You're heart stops. Can he get to the ball? Will it be fair or foul? If he catches it, can he get the runner and prolong the game? He's right at the line! It's going foul! Drop it! It'll be strike two! Don't chance it! Ahhhrgh! Time stops as Mohr crosses into foul territory, catches the ball, stumbles over the Giants' bullpen mound, and falls into a heap, obviously in pain. Robinson scores and the Giants lose. Mohr's patella tendon is toast and so are your nerves. Taking a three-to-two lead into the ninth inning, the San Francisco relievers did their best early-August impression by allowing five ugly runs, costing Jason Schmidt a well-deserved victory and chipping away at his fading Cy Young chances.

You have to wonder if the Giants let their emotions (or their testosterone) get the better of them last night, losing their focus on the task at hand and thereby snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The game was rife with dramatic incidents, not the least of which was the Astro's late comeback. The two teams had a benches-clearing conversation in the third inning after Barry Bonds dodged starter Brandon Backe's pitch at the knees for the second time in an at-bat. Later, during the Astro's big rally, closer Dustin Hermanson was ejected from the game, along with manager Felipe Alou, after plunking salty ex-Giant and truck washer extraordinaire Jeff Kent. With the loss, the Giants give the Cubs a half-game lead in the Wild Card race and the Dodgers a game-and-a-half edge in the division. What a difference a bad half-inning makes.

If you thought last night's game was tense, you don't know nothing. Tonight brings the Dodgers and general baseball mayhem to Third and King for the last home series of the year. The Giants have nine games left in the season, the Dodgers ten, and the two teams play six times in that short span. It's not unreasonable to think that the team that plays better in those match-ups will win the division. And to make matters even more interesting, the Dodgers' second best player, outfielder Shawn Green, one of ten Jews playing in the big leagues right now, will miss at least tonight's game and possibly tomorrow's in observance of Yom Kippur, a noble act he's undertaken once before, also to the benefit of the Giants. (Late breaking news: he's playing tonight and sitting tomorrow.) SFist applauds Green for setting a good example for the kids as well as giving the Giants a little bit of an edge when it really counts.

But, oh, how things have changed. SFist got its playoff tickets in the mail yesterday and is pretty psyched about the idea of October baseball as the Giants are coming together at just the right time.

San Francisco has a half-game lead in the Wild Card race and is only a half game back of the hated Dodgers (AKA the Choking Dogs) in the division. After clubbing around the recently unbeatable Roy Oswalt and the Astros real good last night behind wunderkind rookie Noah Lowry, the Giants send Jason Schmidt to the mound tonight looking for the sweep. And tomorrow San Francisco welcomes the Dodgers to the House That Bonds Built for the last three home games of the season in what is unquestionably the most important series of the year to date. SFist has been to three of the five games played so far in the current home stand (the Giants went two-and-one against the Padres over the weekend and have taken the first two from the Astros) and will be there tonight, tomorrow and Saturday as well (and if anyone needs a partner for Sunday, you know who to email), so watch out for more feverish Giants updates in the coming days.

In related news, SFist is currently putting together a bet about the Giants and Dodgers and their remaining six games with Phil Wallace, Dodgers beat writer (we wish!) for LAist. Anybody got any suggestions about what the stakes should be?

And, um, oh yeah, the Athletics are managing to keep the Angels and Rangers, who have just killed Oakland recently, at bay in the AL West.
