Although we were much too busy with failed attempts at bit-part stardom to care about our civic duty this weekend -- a mistake we'll never make again -- we have read some interesting tidbits covering Saturday's Leno/Migden/some other candidate district 3 dance-off, or whatever. A trainload of subway riders was startled and a little starstruck Saturday afternoon when Assemblymember Mark Leno stepped on board at Civic Center heading toward Embarcadero. "Look who it is!" yelled a guy on a Rascal (we kid you not) and Mark was all smiles and waves. "Going to the parade," he explained, gesturing to the vaguely tranditional-Chinese-style shirt that he was wearing. "Nice outfit," said a guy with a shopping bag full of six-packs, to which Mark replied, "gotta wear the right drag."

Ralph Nader may have recently swung by and accused college students of not doing enough to get actively politically, but a bunch of Stanford students seem to be rising to the challenge. Led by Walter Haas, son of well-known Bay Area philanthropist Walter Haas, the group of Stanford students are rallying for a cause SFist can easily get behind, changing the closing time of bars from 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. Haas is trying to rally a bunch of organizations to support him by claiming that letting bars serve drinks past 2 will actually save lives.
