14 Arrested During UC Regent Protest at Mission Bay Campus

It has begun. Today, a day after a mass walkout was planned for the UC system, 14 protesters were arrested "after they briefly shut down a regents meeting this morning in San Francisco where a proposed tuition hike was being discussed," reports SFGate. "Whose university? Our university! "Lay off Yudof!" was the chant students, faculty and other assorted staff members yelled at the UCSF's Mission Bay campus. (Yudof was none too please. One of his Twitter messages reflects that: "Lots of shouting. Be nice if everyone shouting respected the free speech rights of the rest of us. We'll take a break until we can resume.") According to CBS 5/BCN, "The interruption came during a public comment period that opened the daylong board meeting. During the public comment period, dozens of people had voiced their opposition to the plan, as well as their disapproval of UC President Mark Yudof." Also, San Francisco Supervisor John Avalos was one of the speakers voicing his frustration at the UC regents plan to increase fees and tuition. Even one of its own board members, Lt. Gov. John Garamendi, is furious at the fee hikes, who said in a written statement, "[Yudof's] jaw-dropping proposal...will single-handedly take a University of California education off the table for thousands of hardworking students," The regents, by all accounts, should be ashamed of themselves. Seriously. Anyway, the arrested protesters were "cited for trespassing and unlawful assembly and released." The board will vote on the fee hike come November.

Woman Arrested for Letting Kids Roast In Car

You've heard this story too many times. A parent leaves their young offspring inside of their car (or worse, their pet dog) with the windows up, the car sits in the sun, the car gets too hot, and then the kids gets toasted to death. It's a sad tale, one that almost happened Friday after Fremont police arrested "a woman who left her two children in a parked car where the internal temperature had reached 107 degrees." Fortunately, the kids, who were "sweating profusely," were rescued before they croaked from heat exhaustion. The mother, it seems, left the inside the vehicle "for more than half an hour." How does this thing happen, Bay Area parents? Does it happen often, accidentally leaving the tykes in the Prius? Please advise.

Arson Suspect in Custody

According to yesterday's Richmond Police newsletter (via RichmondSF), an arsonist was arrested yesterday.

Man Arrested In Connection with Oakland Motel Sister Murders

The unidentified man suspected of killing Geraldine Karina Latchison, 23, and her sister, Angel Latchison, 20, was arrested by police at around 2:30 a.m. this morning. Police found him inside a house at 16th Street and Myrtle. The man reportedly called the police too. Strange. Anyway, if you recall, the two sisters "were found shot dead at the Value Inn on West MacArthur Boulevard in North Oakland on Monday night." The sisters' family members claim that they were living there since June 5, after "being evicted from their West Oakland home in an ongoing dispute with a landlord." (Er, apologies if we ever suggested otherwise.) The two reportedly had an ongoing relationship with a man, although we can't say for sure if it's the same man who, most likely, will be charged with their murders.

Patrick Wolf, who is some sort of British pop star singer, was arrested in San Francisco last night. Thankfully, he Twittered the entire thing for your enjoyment.

Cop Killer's Sister Arrested

Enjoli Mixon, 24, the brother sister of the man who shot and killed four Oakland police offices being being gunned down, was arrested over the weekend for "being under the influence of a controlled substance," according to reports. This most recent brush with the law stems form a bench warrant for her arrest in Fremont in 2008.

BART Cop Update: Suicide Watch! Murder Charges! Nevada!

In an amazing twist, murder charges were officially filed against Johannes Mehserle, 27, who (allegedly) shot and killed Oscar Grant on New Year's Day on the Fruitvale BART station platform. The amazing part is that Mehserle is being charged with murder, not manslaughter. (Even those cops in NYC who shot Sean Bell just hours before his wedding were just charged with manslaughter.) If you recall, Matier & Ross said if "Mehserle is charged with a crime in Grant's shooting, it will be a first."

Big-cat attack survivor Kulbir Dhaliwal, who saw his fame quotient skyrocket last year after Tatiana the tiger escape from her grotto and went on a fatal rampage, was handed ten days in jail after pleading guilty to public intoxication and resisting arrest. This incident happened before the Tatiana killed the Dhaliwal's "friend" Carlos Sousa, Jr. The Dhaliwal brothers, it seems, "were arrested Sept. 7, 2007, after they scuffled with San Jose police who tried to stop them after seeing them chase two men down the street." But wait, it gets better! Kulbir also "cursed at officers while kicking the security partition in a squad car, forcing police to pull him out and put him in leg restraints."

The final suspect in this week's terrible Tracy child abuse case has been nabbed. Caren Ramirez, 43, was picked up by police at her Berkeley home at around 9:30 p.m. last night. The case has received much media attention ever since a 17-year-old boy escaped from the home of Michael Luther Schumacher, 34, and Kelly Layne Lau, 30, on Monday via "vaulting over an 8-foot wall separating the couple's backyard and the parking lot of the In-Shape Sports Club in Tracy." He was found emaciated, nearly naked, and wearing a chain padlocked to his ankle. Schumacher and his wife, Lau, were arrested on Monday.

San Francisco police arrested Matthew Owyang, 19, of Daly City in connection with the shooting deaths of Jason De La Cruz, 31, and Derek Butch, 23, which happened this past weekend. If you recall, De la Cruz and Butch were murdered in the Sunset last Saturday after De la Cruz took out his Verizon Wireless sales team to celebrate a successful sales month.
