Principal Jennifer Ponzio wrote in the email that Wheatley had requested to sing a song that wasn’t on the schedule, which Ponzio quickly deemed inappropriate upon hearing and jumped in.

“During the concert, which included eight classes, our Trustee requested to sing a song that was not part of the planned program,” Ponzio says in the email, per NBC Bay Area. “The song, which dates back to the 1940s, included references that were not appropriate for a young audience, including mention of a weapon. Now, nearly 60 years later, officials in Hayward and Alameda County are proposing a $900,000 redress fund for surviving residents who had their land seized and homes destroyed.

As KGO reports, Hayward officials and Alameda County Supervisors Elisa Márquez and Nate Miley have proposed that $250,000 would be allocated to the fund from the City of Hayward, $400,000 from Márquez’s office, and $250,000 from Miley’s. The funds would go to former Russell City residents whose properties were taken by eminent domain and annexed into Hayward.

Russell City was home to roughly 1,400 people, including Black, Latino, Asian, and poor white residents, before it was razed. About 700 parcels were seized. Alameda County followed with its own apology in 2023. That same year, the county formed a Reparations Commission to study the harms done to Russell City residents. The Russell City Reparative Justice Project — launched in 2022 — provided recommendations for how to move from apology to tangible repair.

Supervisor Márquez, who grew up in nearby Kelly Hill and first heard about Russell City from classmates at Fairview Elementary, said, “This is the result of collective and local action. The Board of Supervisors is expected to vote on the proposal at its July 22 meeting.

Image: Russell City Art Commemoration mural, Heritage Plaza, Hayward; Downtown Hayward Improvement Association/Facebook

Police Chief George Gascón Apologizes to Middle Eastern Communities

As we predicted this morning, San Francisco Police Chief George Gascón made his official apology today regarding <a hr...

SF News

apology

george gascon

police

sfpd

terrorism

Brock Keeling

As we predicted this morning, San Francisco Police Chief George Gascón made his official apology today regarding statements he made about our local Middle Eastern ilk possibly parking a van outside the Hall of Justice at 850 Bryant and blowing it to smithereens.

The seemingly remorseful press release, sent out my the SFPD Media Relations Unit, says:

Police Chief George Gascón would like to apologize to those in the Arab, Middle Eastern, and Muslim communities who were offended by his comments yesterday. Chief Gascón did not intend to upset the community and he his mindful of the importance of cultural sensitivity, not only here in San Francisco, but nationally. The Chief and members of the San Francisco Police Department would also like to wish those of you who celebrate, a very happy Persian New Year.

So, there you have it -- an apology plus a Persian New Year shout-out.

Welcome to the city, George.

Pete Stark Apologizes to Bush

After House Democrats rescued him from censure today, Fremont Democratic Representative <a href="http://www.house.gov/star...

SF News

anti-war

antiwar

apologizes

apology

Archbishop George Niederauer

Bush

Catholic Church

censure

children

church

Democrats

fremont

House

House Democrats

Pete Stark

petestark

SF Politics

President Bush

soldiers

video

war

Brock Keeling

We sure are remorseful these days. First, Archbishop George Niederauer offered his mea culpa to the Catholic Church for giving Communion to the Sisters. Now Stark is getting in on it.

After House Democrats rescued him from censure today, Fremont Democratic Representative Pete Stark then apologized to members of the House and President Bush for his recent remark about "'soldiers getting their heads blown up...for the President's amusement." (Watch his pointed rant in its entirety here.)

According to the Chronicle, Stark said, "On a very serious note, I want to apologize to my colleagues, many of whom I have offended, to the president, his family, to the troops," going on to say, "I apologize for this reason: I think we have serious issues before us, the issue of providing medical care to children, the issue about what we're going to do about a war that we're divided about how to end."

Bush then sent him bed at an early hour, with neither dinner nor dessert.
