As the winners of Live 105's Local Band competition, Maldroid will be opening for Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, Angels & Airwaves, Spoon, and Paramore tomorrow night at the "Not So Silent Night" bash at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium. Maldroid's sound is a mix between The Beatles and The Hives. They first became popular when their video, "He Said, She Said," won "The Youtube Underground" competition - Youtube's first ever music video competition. They......

The results are in: Maldroid is currently the best local band in San Francisco according to Live 105's local band competition. They will be opening for Spoon, Angels & Airwaves, Paramore, Jimmy Eat World and Modest Mouse. According to Ryan Devine's blog (the lead singer), "[It] sucks that Paramore and Angels & Airwaves have to embarrass themselves after us. Looking forward to Modest Mouse and Spoon though!" Well, well, well... someone's shit doesn't stink.......

The motorcycling-riding Johnny Knoxville of his time, minus any homoerotic subtext, Evel Knievel died today at the wonderful age of 69. He passed away after years of suffering from "diabetes and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, an incurable condition that scarred his lungs." Which? Good for him -- in that he wasn't taken down by his daredevil-laced stuntsmanship. He even survived a run-in with the Hell's Angels. (Aside: why do the Hell's Angels act like such......

We had twenty but it's down to the last five. Live 105, a big supporter of local music scene (see popscene) is at it again. Each December, Live 105 hosts the "Not So Silent Night" event which brings a host of great bands - this year it's Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World, Angels & Airwaves, Spoon and Paramore - to San Francisco. (Seems like a great line-up to us.) To make it even more......

It seems that NBC 11 caught Bill O'Reilley's film crew taking in the (non)X-rated partying that went on at last Saturday's Erotic Exotic Ball. This week he'll devoted an entire segment to the annual "sexy" Halloween fete, and even have the ball’s founder, Perry Mann, on as a guest. ...

Each Tuesday we will feature new music that should (or whatever) be on your radar. Standouts: 1. Thrice - The Alchemy Index, Vol 1 & 2: The juxtaposition of fire and water is felt on these two separate EP's that Thrice entitles, "The Alchemy Index." Thrice's investigation into nature doesn't stop with Volumes I & II - they'll continue on with Volumes III & IV in Spring of 2008. Pushing their musical boundaries, Volume I......

More jet madness! There's nothing like hearing the roar of fighter jets above-head on a sunny afternoon in downtown San Francisco. Just when we were this close to being cured of our September 11th PTSD, the Blue Angels showed up just in time to give us the shakes. Thanks, America. We will never forget.......

The Blue Angels get to stay. Vroom. Woosh. Board of Supervisors voted down Chris Daly's measure that would've grounded the Blue Angels from zooming overheard in their annual freedom-ain't-free air extravaganza. Michela Alioto-Pier was one of the strongest haters on Daly's measure, claiming that it was "a little fly-by-night, 'let's do this because we think it might not be safe,'" Hmm. Anyway, read more about it here or here.......

As promised, non-mayoral candidate Chris Daly's proposing his nonbinding resolution to ban the Blue Angels from flying over San Francisco at the Governmental Audit and Oversight Committee meeting today. Daly, who's been working with Code Pink, Global Exchange, and Veterans for Peace on the resolution, is asking that San Francisco elected officials work to reduce unnecessary military flyovers in the area, saying that the loud jets are a threat to publich safety; upset pets,......

Our top 5 moments at Feist's Fillmore show on Tuesday, June 26th: 5. Hearing a cash register clang at the back of the venue in the middle of the set, and realizing that the sold-out crowd was perfectly silent. San Francisco concertgoers can really take their music seriously. You stay classy. 4. Instead of playing to the crowd, Feist literally played the crowd by dividing us into three sections (by type of shoe......

This is all Ed Jew's fault. We were so distracted by updating you on the latest in his woes that we totally missed the news that we just got from a favorite reader that previous SFist obsession District 6 Supe Chris Daly threw one of his famous fits at the Board of Supes meeting today! NO! How did we miss this? Over what, though? Over what?? All we've got is a news item from......

While San Francisco is known globally for a certain worldview, those of us who actually live here know that when it comes down to particulars, we don't often agree. We can't agree on Blue Angels. We can't agree on a Muni solution. Heck, we can't even agree on what to do about Ed Jew (oh no!). But you know a banner we can all unite under? The One City One Book: San Francisco Reads program. Imagine, hordes of people reading a sort of narrative story on paper! No electricity required (save, perhaps, for reading lights). ...

You know we'd never say Chris Daly backed down from a fight, especially not in the title of a post! However, we did just get an email from the Gavin Newsom 2008 people noting that the Board of Supes Budget Committee meeting scheduled for tomorrow has been cancelled. That was the meeting that was supposed to be the proxy mayoral race over Daly and Newsom's competing visions of the city (i.e., whether we were......

Quick, look out your window! Are pigs flying? Mark this day on your calendar, because pugnacious Supervisor Chris Daly has actually backed down on something he's proposed (other than running for mayor, that is). After getting inundated with calls from the media (presumably right-leaning) about his statement the other day about introducing a resolution before the Board of Supes calling for a permanent ban on the Blue Angels' noisy air shows over San Francisco,......
