Last week's winner, the SF Weekly: Gosh, the Chron seems awfully enthralled with that Zodiac movie, doesn't it? Also, more on the Leno/Migden throwdown, quoting Paul Hogarth from Beyond Chron (who now supports Leno). Cover article: An awesome piece about mentally ill dogs. Who knew bordie collies got OCD? Meredith goes to the Presidio Social Club; SFist Ced gruffly concedes maybe she's been doing a good job lately. Let's Get Killed laments the new boring......

With the preponderance of ">world ">class gyms and fighters in the Bay Area, SFist has always wondered why the San Francisco Golden Gloves has evolved into more of a fighter friends and family event than a fan-oriented competition, as it was when established in 1931. In years past we've witnessed the Gloves from the bleachers of the Cow Palace, where remnants of hay and manure from last week's rodeo made us feel more like......

Athens Olympics closing ceremoniesIt's finally time to get off the couch and get back to work. That's right, the Olympics are over, nothing went horribly wrong, everybody was smitten with being at the sites of the original games, and Team USA cleaned up (with medals - EssEffist knows what you're thinking). And as you all know, we here in the Bay Area love our weird Olympics sports - and the not so weird ones, too. First of all, EssEffist would like to point out that we've been rooting for Andre Ward since day one, when no one gave him a chance against the powerful boxers from the former USSR. He'll be bringing back the first individual gold for Oakland since 1968. We've also highlighted the story of Tammy Crow, synchronized swimmer, recently convicted of vehicular manslaughter - with her help, the team managed a bronze, remarkable considering she'll soon start having to serve her ninety-day sentence. All told, Olympians with Bay Area connections managed to win seven golds, five silvers and four bronze medals - tying host Greece for 17th place in the medal standings. EssEffist would like to point out that San Francisco has never had the opportunity to host the Olympics. Come on, International Olympic Committee, we have a great climate for athletics, all the facilities for watersports you could ever want, and we love Santiago Calatrava! I'm looking at the members of the National Social Register, EssEff chapter, to come up with some of that bribe money for 2016....

EssEffist loves us some women's beach voleyball. Sand, sun, world-class athletes and hot girl-on-girl action [Ed. Note: We really hope this doesn't get us filtered out of our own site at work.]. Our dream matchup - the United States versus Brazil in the gold medal final - totally came true. And after a quick forty-five minutes, heavily favored southlander Misty May and Stanford grad Kerri Walsh prevailed over Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede in straight sets, 21-17 and 21-11....

Andre Ward, born and raised in Oakland, is currently in Athens, Greece getting ready to take on the world in the boxing ring. America's best shot for gold as a pugilist, he is one of dozens of athletes at the Olympics with ties to the Bay Area. This guy hasn't lost a fight since he started boxing at age fourteen - much like his father, who was undefeated in fifteen bouts. A light heavyweight, Ward trains at King's Gym in Oakland....
