While it's not particularly local, the news that Amazon.com has agreed to purchased warehouse robotics manufacturer Kiva Systems for $775 million should be alarming to anyone who fears the inevitable robot uprising. Amazon, which is of course known for its paper-eliminating and small business-destroying products, purchased the Massachusetts-based logistics technology company in order to replace many of the worker bees stuck with menial packing and shipping jobs and generally "improve efficiency" in the warehouses.

Daily Show Makes Fun Of California's Ballot Initiative System
Once again, the Daily Show sees fit to make fun of us, and this time it's the entire state of California that takes the brunt of their comedic reportage. On last night's Daily Show, they looked into the ballot initiative sponsored by Amazon.com to overturn the state law requiring online retailers to pay sales tax in the state which was a prime example of how the direct democracy thing in California has become perverted and regularly used by corporations and special interests to their own benefit.

Amazon to Buy Netflix?
Word on Wall Street is that Silicon Valley's Netflix, who in just 12 years has changed the way we rent movies while clobbering Blockbuster's power, might be bought out by Amazon. According to CBS 5, "[t]he Los Gatos-based Netflix recently began offering online streaming of some movies, which is why Amazon may be interested in buying the company." Neither company, of course, has yet to comment on Wall Street's rumors.
UPDATE: Amazon "Glitch" Causes Uproar Among the Gays
Over the weekend, much of the GLBT community sent itself into hysterics after Amazon seemingly removed sales rankings from a large amount of LGBT books for deemed "adult" in content. That is to say, books like James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room, Annie Proulx's Brokeback Mountain, The Advocate College Guide for LGBT Students, and feminist/general sexuality were considered too hot for Amazon viewers' eyes.
